I’m genuinely not expecting it to suck. Afterlife was a solid addition to the series, and wasn’t just a sequel, but in some ways a modernisation.
This one is said to take inspiration from the animated series, which has always been a favourite of mine. I know they did similar with Ghostbusters 2 (Winston being clean shaven, Slimer being back, Louis etc) but for me that’s part of that movie’s appeal. I mean, when a cartoon has carried the franchise torch for like, five years? You don’t just dismiss that appeal out of hand.
Also hoping for some tie-in tat from the cinema snack bar.

Lots of fun, but some irritating flaws, particularly a somewhat rushed third act. Not sure I’d go see it on the big screen again, but it’ll be welcome in my home media collection as a purchase.

I liked this way, waaaaayyyy more than Afterlife. This one had a much better balance between lore, ominous spookery and comedy. It also made much better use of Ernie Hudson and Dan Akroyd, and Bill Murray looked less miserable.
Most importantly, Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt gave the film the laughs and lighter tone that it needed.
The film succeeded where it was funny, where it tried new things with the lore, and where the characters interacted with each other. It was still heavily flawed by cringeworthy nostalgia-bait and overdone action scenes that felt weightless. The car chase in the beginning and the big fight at the climax both felt like scenes from bad movies spliced in, or like pre-formulated MCU action set pieces. The complicated transforming contraptions also jarred with the grounded working-stiff’s gear of the original two movies.
The lore being built up really did tickle my pickle. It feels like the franchise is now getting ready to go places.
And thinking on it last night? I think this is the first Ghostbusters film to feature actual character development. That’s not a backhanded criticism of the previous four movies. Just an observation. And I appreciated it.
My favourite scene?
Spoiler:
Early on, when we see Ray in his bookstore and Ecto-1 drives past. He’s clearly wistful, thinking of his glory days. Even a little jealous, but healthy jealous.
This is matched beautifully when he has that talk with Winston, about how bustin’ is exactly what he wants to be doing in his golden years.
It feels super respectful to all involved, and importantly? Entirely genuine.
Despite some stick in the mud, up their own arse, how dare a film be fun professional critic reviews? I hope this does well enough to get more sequels going. Because the concept and setting have gas in the tank. And lawd knows we need more films which are happy to just be fun. Not wacky funny. Not smartarsed. Not trying to get a mega-franchise going. Just films where those involved in the making had a great time doing so.
Plus I’d love at least a cameo for Rick Moranis.

Unless were retconning 2016 into being part of this continuity I wouldn't count it as being part of the "main series". Outside of the name they are completely unconnected.
As for Frozen Empire it was fine. If you enjoyed Afterlife you'll probably like this, though whether more, less, or about the same is up to you, but overall it'll be a fun viewing. I've seen some of the criticisms and while many of them are fair it doesn't detract from being something most people will enjoy. I have my nitpicks but really nothing egregious enough to keep it from being something worth seeing.
I've seen some talk about it being like The Real Ghostbusters cartoon but I can't really comment on that as I haven't seen an episode of that in decades. Being a monster of the week kind of show it definitely feels like my memory of the series but not certain it matches up to reality of the series.
A little touch I appreciated was that the main team wore the tan uniforms from the original while the research team wore the dark grey uniforms from the Ghostbusters 2.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
I don’t exactly disagree with their observations, but the scores given seem overly low. And they don’t seem to given it credit for just being fun, despite its flaws.
Though I also note the audience reviews for Afterlife were significantly higher than pro reviews. At least according to Rotten Tomatoes (look, it’s a source!)
Pros also seemingly slated Ghostbusters 2, so they can just about flipping well hush their gums. Because that film is great.
