My first army that I learned how to paint on was Eldar. I'd love to have a bunch of those models back as clean grey slates and redo them. I have stripped some, but doing a whole army would take forever.

My Templar I started later and had a better plan in mind. Even then some of my early stuff was boring and I updated my paint scheme later on. And recently updated my paint scheme again. They all fit together still, but I can see the differences! hehe.

Honestly, I think few things are more rewarding than "rescuing" old miniatures. I've done a bunch of this. Not only is it usually the cheaper option, but you can remove eyesores from your collection and transform them into something you're proud of. It produces less waste too. I would recommend it to anybody. I'm currently doing some old metal Eldar. I frontloaded most of the stripping so that the annoying part was done first, and now I'm just going at a relaxed pace and building a classic army.

I second this, making my old IG look finally decent was a long endeavour, but definitely worth it. Besides, It's indeed less expensive than buying a new army!

Yep. I've been rescuing my OG space marines and my brothers old 2e metal guard and Chaos and it was a really fun project. Make sure to take pictures of your crappy old paint jobs before the glow up!

I've got my massive Ork army on my agenda - it's not as bad as those two because I was a bit older when I painted it but the early models really need a touch up and lots of repairs need to be done. It's pretty daunting - I was a mono-Ork player for my teens and early 20s and so I've got a crapload of stuff to do. But when it gets finished I want to be really proud of it!
