Thanks for the great level of detail, advice on all sized armies, and 3 rules to live (and die) by. I am getting a pretty good list together of what I am missing, and should be going shopping soon! A couple of quick questions:

- Can you take Rough Riders in a mech list? Do they need a Chimera (which no sense) or are they considered to be mechanized/mobile already?

- Can any command group take a vehicle without the full force being mechanized? I don't know why, but I thought it was all or none (except AF squads of course)

- You mention some of the better options to take on the Chimeras. Would you suggest making any mandatory, or just take them as points allow?

The "Mechanized" doctrine only requires that "Guard Infantry Squads" be mounted in a Chimera.  Check your codex for specifics on what exactly a Guard Infantry Squad is, but no - you don't have to buy a Chimera for a Rough Rider squad.

Command squads, both platoon and HQ, can take a Chimera without the mechanized doctrine.

The only places I add upgrades to the Chimerae are for my "suicide" units.  If I really need that Chimera to be going places, I don't want to deal with a "Stunned" result, or to bog down in the trees.

"Add troop squads to taste; keep breaking platoons apart, and keep them min-sized to fill more force org slots"

Why would you want to do this? To get more 5 man HQ squads instead of 10 man las/plas squads?!!! I'd propose the opposite - you want a AF squad and a 5 squad platoon and improved comms for escalation. Use that reroll to ensure that 6 chimera platoon comes out of reserve together on the first available turn.

It's an interesting thought you've got.

My reasoning is pretty straightforward.  Given the cost of your Troops slots in a mechanized list, and the size of a platoon, most every army is going to be able to out-deploy you, and they'll be placing some of their best units at the end, after everything you have is on the table.  The more Troops slots you can spread your force across, the longer you delay the "I'm all done" moment.

Thats pretty much a problem with any guard army in deployment. Your opponent is probably much more concerned with the location of your 3 heavies anyway. With the space taken up by all those chimeras in your deployment area you really have little choice anyway.

what about the Armored Company list in WD# 294?

isn't it also a valid list?
