I like how you painted the scales, it doesnt just look like a drybrush.

Thanks for the compliments! The orange parts are painted macharius orange, and then washed twice with red. I mix the GW foundation orange and foundation red and drybrush back over the top to finish it. The black is just a grey dry brush actually. I pick out some of the more prominent scales with the grey.

I just painted this guy up today. I really like the model, so I am going to use the model as a psyker. He is a vampire psyker I guess. I built another squad of troops with 3 missile launchers for each of the squads so far, and now I am just waiting for a chance to spray them.

Love the riders! General is great too. How much work did it take for the rough riders? Been thinking of doing something similar for my wife's guard army project

Thanks for the compliments!

The rough riders actually took a good amount of time. First I took cadian legs that matched up, I will try and post a picture of the two sets of legs where the left and right leg match. I take the left leg from one set and match it with the right leg of the other set if that makes sense.

Then I take a round file, and shave the inside of the leg down so it will look better around the saddle and the cold one. Once the leg is shaved down and looks good, I glue the legs to either side, trying to keep the waist of the rider almost touching. at this point I fill in with greenstuff to reconstruct the kinda skirt looking thing they wear, and to create a flatish point to glue the body to.

I then attach the body, shaving down the waist sometimes to angle it the way I want the body, and then retouch the skirt and waist with green stuff to make sure it looks good.

At this point you could attach whatever you want for the arms, but If you want to do the shields and spears, the spears are from the cold ones frame, and the shields are from the empire militia frame. The shields I attach to cadian arms, and then green stuff the straps on the arms and shield.
The spears that are charging I cut off a cadian arm at the shoulder pad, and attach the bottom half of the arm that comes with the spear. I shave down the bottom half of the arm, and then I green stuff the arm to make it look like the cadian sleeve, because it used to be armour. With the spears that are pointing up its much easier, I just use a cadian arm and glue the hand and spear to it.

I hope that all makes sense! It took awhile, but I think it was worth it, because I love these guys. After I finish my ten man troop squad I am going to make some more rough riders, so I will try and post in progress shots of them the next time around.

What kind of mutations caused this psyker to becomes vamp? is it Chaos influence? or more scientific reasons? (like radiation exposure, malicious micro-organism, some bad chems mutate folks genetically, else?)

Chaos taint?!?! How dare you sir. They are loyal to the emperor through and through. The vampiric traits are from radiation, and he plays up the theme to strike fear in his enemies. Nobody wants to mess with a vampire.

Hazzer, I am not really sure what you were trying to say, sorry. Could you clarify?

I do not understand what he was trying to say. I understood your question, thanks.

P.S. I am working on that origin story, hopefully I will get something down soon.

Thanks for the compliments! Here are the 3 rocket launcher guardsmen, all finished. I am hoping these will help my army in-game quite a bit, I need some more heavy weapons fire. Next up is the rest of the 3rd infantry platoon.

Ladies and Gentleman, we have progress! This 3rd platoon is coming along real well, I have them all base coated, hilighted, and washed. Just have to dry brush back over the red, and add the gold before doing the skin. I am psyched to get these guys all finished, so I can do more interesting stuff (more rough riders). I do love the guy kneeling and holding is helmet on the ground though.

Home sick from work today, and got a ton of hobby done, very exciting. Makes being sick not so bad. I finished the 3rd platoon, all painted. It makes 3 platoons with a rocket launcher in each. I needed some more punch in those squads from previous experience, so I added the rocket launchers. I don't know what is up with the helmet guy's eye, but I am still a big fan of him. I fixed the big grey spot I somehow got on his waist after the pictures. I also moved the leaders head so he has the sword pulled back more instead of pushed out in front of him, if that makes sense. Next up, mo rough riders.

Ok I have been working on the rest of the rough riders. I am going to do 3 more to bring the squad up to 8. I am going to walk through the steps on here since someone asked about it.

The first step is t take the pairs of legs that are mirrors of each other. I have pics of the 2 sets of leg here.
[Thumb - IMG_3855.JPG]

[Thumb - IMG_3856.JPG]

Regular Dakkanaut

The next step is to cut those legs in half and match up the similar legs, like so.
[Thumb - IMG_3857.JPG]

Made in us
Regular Dakkanaut

Now is a slightly tricky part, but not too bad. I file down the inside of the legs so it will fit on the saddle. I have the pictures here, but sometimes I will have to file down more of the inside of the leg than what is shown here. Once I have this much done I try and fit it to the saddle, and shave it down if I need to.

The leg on the left is shaved down, the leg on the right is not shaved down at all. I circled the part that is shaved down in the 2nd pic.

Next I glue a leg to each side of the saddle. More pics to come soon.

Thanks! I will have more shortly, but my green stuff is pretty dried out and doesn't really stick to the model any more, so I need to grab some more. Once I do I will put up a tutorial for how I finish off the legs and arms. Most of it is green stuffing the gaps.

dsteingass wrote:Man! I love the greatsword-wielding Kamikaze-looking guardsman!

Haha thanks a lot! I really like him too, the greatsword is from the empire swordsman sprue, and the head is from the cadian command squad. He also has a sweet mohawk, so bonus.

So I have been slightly delayed from the guard for a bit, because I was asked to do a guest comic for the readysoup web comic!

Check the comic out here: http://readysoup.tumblr.com/

The artist is moving this week, and they are having guest artists all week. I am pretty excited and honored to do a guest spot, I love the comic, and everyone should definitely check it out. My comic will be up March 13th, and after that you can access it through the archive.

I used my guard models for the comic, but I modeled the two main characters of the comics heads and put them on different guardsmen. Here is a sneak peak of the heads I made for them. The ones hair is ridiculous, but it is ridiculous in the comic so I am ok with it.

I have been ever so slightly side tracked from my guardsmen. After completing 2000 points, I can feel my hobby butterfly kicking in. I will return to the rough riders very soon because I love them, but I really wanted to do some painting. So here are some terminators for my brothers space marine army. The colors are orange and bone, and the terminators are bone like the deathwing. I really like that look. Pictures of his army are throughout this blog in battle reports, and I believe I have posted some other pics of his models. If you want to see more I can post some. He has 2000 to 3000 points painted.

anyways here are pics of the first terminator completed, and the rest of his squad primed and washed. The only change is a head swap with grey knight terminator heads, and the sergeant has the thunderhammer from the grey knights also.

I also have not added his shoulder pads yet. I think I want to have custom shoulder pads, but I have not decided exactly what I want to use yet.

I have just read this entire thread from start to finish and I have a few things I wish to say! lol

Firstly I know how hard it can be to pick a colour scheme and I think your gamble of going with the red really paid off, IG look good in numbers its often very hard to tell with just one model what the army will look like once completed so the first well done there! My Kasrkin are also red/black and are the only thing I have painted so far! Although the rest of the force will be grey/black.

Secondly another well done for creating a very original army, I love the conversions and I may well borrow a few of your recommendations on the modelling (don't panic I wont be copying the style just the methods).

Thirdly and the thing that I do wish to replicate is the dogs! Where did you get them if you don't mind sharing that is lol ?

Thanks for the compliments IG10000! It's awesome that you read through the whole blog thank you. I think it is one of the best compliments I can get if people want to use my ideas or even copy my whole army! So definitely take any conversion ideas you can from this.

The dogs are from reaper miniatures, called garr wardog, crusaders monster. here is a link to the model on their website, but you can find it other places they sell reaper minis.

I am pretty sure I bought mine on ebay. You can find them on ebay by typing in garr wardog.

So I played a game over the weekend, and got absolutely crushed. It was my 2000 pt IG list, pretty much everything I have painted, against 1000 pts each of space wolves and tau. Tough combination, wolves dropped in and didn't let me get to the tau, so they could shoot me up real good. I ended up with 1 fully functional leman russ (the one with pointing guy. booyah.) and a immobilized hellhound with no gun on top. I killed about 10 models.

The one bright spot of the game was getting to use my rough riders! they looked good. They got spanked by 1 space wolf scout they didn't kill on the charge, but they looked good doing it. Here are some pics of their glorious charge. everything else from this game will be promptly forgotten.

Also I finished painting the landing pad (so awesome) and a bastion. I should have pics up of them soon.

Here's some pics of the terrain I just painted. The gold on the huge eagle on the landing pad was a pain, but I really like how everything turned out. I am keeping the colors to black and gold and silver on the defense pieces so they match both my guard army and my brothers space marines.

I know how long it takes to paint the Skyshield!! and you've done an Excellent job!

However, if I were you, I'd go back and work the drybrushing in the flat areas a little bit tighter now (in small, light, circular patterns-), leaving the lighter gray on the edge highlights (that looks really good)

AND/OR

Wash or ink around every rivet and panel line (trust me, it sounds like a lot of work, and it is, but it will totally POP when you are done). Improving your Paintjob 100%
