Phototoxin wrote:How do you find the time to harvest all those rescources? i have dificulty finding even iron!
General first day strategy which should help you find iron or coal:
First day, get lots of wood. Turn wood into wooden planks. Use planks to make a crafting table, use crafting table to make sticks, then with that and more planks, a pick, shovel, axe, hoe, and sword. Dig up crafting table and take it with you to a cliffside. Use pick (on stone and gravel) and shovel (on dirt and sand) to create a cave. Place workbench again, and use it and the cobblestone gotten from mining stone to create a furnace. In the furnace, put a block of wood on top, and a block of wooden planks on the bottom to create charcoal, then a stick with the charcoal to make a torch. Make a lot of torches. Then as the world starts to get dark, cover up the entrance to your cave, and start mining, going down like a staircase into the cliffside, eventually using more wooden sticks and cobblestone to create stone tools so that you can harvest coal and iron. If you have sand, burn it in the furnace to make glass, so that you can see when it's daytime outside. If you have extra wooden planks, use six to make a door, but that can wait for the second day. IF you are intent on mining, create side passages occasionally, and keep creating more torches as you will need them to prevent monsters from spawning in your mine shafts.
And if you DO find iron or coal on the surface of the cliffside, DO NOT MINE IT UNTIL YOU HAVE AT LEAST STONE MATERIALS.
I found that out the hard way. And despite the extra time it takes, it's worth it to mine gravel instead of dig it up. You have a chance of getting flint, which you use for flint and steel (which sets things on fire-- do be careful with that) and arrows.

And you also shouldnt use a pick on gravel, a shovel is much faster and efficient (time-wise and resource wise).
Other than that, the staircase method works well, just make sure you stand ABOVE the layer you want to mine, S= Stone X= You M= What you are mining
SS X SSSS SSSSMM
In the event you uncover lava, you will not fall in. If you do fall into lava, and do not have a bucket full of water, run up your stairs as far as you can, this way, when the fire burns you to death, your stuff will not be destroyed in the lava, but rather fly of your corpse for you to recover when you respawn.
Also, it will help to make a pillar or some other indicator for you to find your home in the event that you do die and cannot get home.

The underlined A would be where I would stand when excavating the L layer, so that I don't get hit by water or lava.
Dunno, only having two layers (IE, exactly enough that you can fit in) feels claustrophobic.

The top view is looking down on the mind. The bottom view is a vertical slice through it.
This is the most optimized method of mining I can come up with. If you follow the pattern exactly it will offset the mine by one block horizontally each time giving you the best pattern I can devise. This method will have you examine either through mining it or just being able to visually look at it 89.81% of the total volume of the mine. The 10.19% you can't see is in one long tube. Since most ore will branch off in one direction or another that will likely bring part of the deposit into the area you expose allowing you to follow it back and get it all. In other words mining in this method will allow you to extract probably 95%+ of the ore in the area you are digging, all with only having to dig out 22.22% of the rock in the area to do it. Using this method I get a stack or more of iron an hour if I mine like a madman.
For navigation I only put torches on the right side of the tunnels. This means if I keep torches on the left side of me I am always heading back to the central chamber. Keep them on the right and I'll be heading deeper into the dig. I put up a torch about every ten meters which keeps the mobs out and when I drop the forth I stop in the tunnel and move to the next.

Mn, I really need to start using ladders when I mine...

I just hate digging stairs and they make getting the next layer positioned just right kind of a pain. Ladders make it easier and quicker in my estimation.

I prefer minning down to bedrock and creating one long, wide tunnel but thats cause it's fun, looks awesome and gets you lots of cobblestone.
+1 my mining procedure is simple, DIG BABY DIG! I go to bedrock then branch out randomly till lava or water cuts me off

Finally got some redstone, so I went about making a tower fortress out of the MASSIVE amounts of cobblestone I have unearthed from all of my mining, and then made an iron door with a switch on the inside on the round level. If I can, I'm gonna extend this tower all the way to the bedrock.

I made a castle from sea level to ceiling about 60 blocks wide and 80 long on the world that was recently deleted :(

A nighttime view of my fort. Forest fire caused by lava spawning above ground included. Yes, that had been burning that entire time.
I felt like having the top part be floating. Dunno, in games like this it's easy to act on a whim.

It looks cool I guess, I made a rule for my burning forest which was to leave everything alone except if there were any blocks of wood floating which weren't on fire or part of a tree on fire.
Those blocks will probably burn almost indefinitely, free and cheap lighting. Forest fires are actually awesome for gathering resources. I've walked through mine a fair few times and picked up the drops left by the stupid tree hugging animals that decided the world was too good for them.

Always in the corner of your eye, but if you notice him that's when he strikes.
Quick little something for you. When you get way deep in your mine takes forever to move around right? Build yourself a base jump chute. I dug a perfectly straight vertical shaft one meter square from my castle to bedrock. I made a 3 deep pit at the bottom and filled it with water. I can jump from the top and fall all the way to the bottom and the 3 levels of water is enough to stop me without any damage. I can get to the bottom of my mine in second.
Haven't done anything about the trip up just yet though.

Make it 2x3 have a waterfall running from the top. Now not only can you free fall safely you can jump in a boat at the bottom and ride it up to the surface.
n0t_u wrote:Those blocks will probably burn almost indefinitely
They were burning when I spawned, and they continued burning after I had mined to the bottom, then came back up and built my tower fortress.
As a side note, it's fun what you can do with fire. Using five stone blocks and a wooden plank block, you can make an eternally burning fireplace, useful if you don't have access to netherrack on that world.

Yes, I wish I could find myself some cacti though, it would be great to prevent spiders from getting in without having to make an overhang...

Cacti have to be placed with a sand block underneath them otherwise they wont go down, like sugarcane need dirt.
I have sand, I was placed on a beach with a ton of mountains surrounding me, and decided to build an underwater home until I found Diamond to make a small obsidian village, gather Netherrack, and make a castle using netherrack to surround it. Cacti could help as they would prevent the Spiders from scaling the walls. I have about 300 Sand right now, and made a sunroof to grow some grass while I was underground...

Bored my mine down to the bedrock and I'm starting to expand it out wards. I'm going to keep working my way up but given the distribution of gold, diamonds, redstone, and lapis, I'm not going to bother going more than about 35 or so levels above the bedrock.
In fact I've reconsidered how I'm going to mine in general. I'll still follow the construction scheme I posted up above but I'll have two areas to mine. One area around sea level and just below where I'll mine out cobblestone, coal, and iron for construction and general use. Then a deep level where I'll mine for everything else. Between those I'm just going to ignore that 40 or so levels where there's nothing but iron and coal. I can get that with a lot less climbing. Figure I'll build a water jump for the upper mine level and a full on elevator for the lower levels.
I've started farming wheat and sugarcane for no real reason than just to do it. I can't believe the rate that sugarcane grows. It'll go from just planted to three levels high in a single day. Wheat's working pretty well too if a bit slower. Those little experiments are going to go from just starter plots built around lakes to truly irrigated subsurface farms here in short order.
I also want to build a mob farm and a tree farm. My TNT addiction needs to be fed and killing creepers by hand is time consuming. I love trees but hate deforesting the surface world.
In short I think I need to move bases. I want to try and start building a more realistic castle with actual curved surfaces that's more than just a surface fort. I like my starting area though and I really don't want to have to spend half an hour running home if I ever get killed. So I can either suck it up and head for somewhere less snowy and awesome or I'm going to have to indulge my earth moving habit and level/build up the hill I'm currently on so it can support a larger structure.
Who am I kidding, I love the terrain near where I am too much to move. Time to make 20 or so shovels and get to digging.

Spend some time learning how nether portals work and then build a safe webway out of cobblestone between them in the nether. Works very well for me to get from one side of the map to the other in moments as you travel at 16 times the speed. Certainly makes it feel a lot more like the warp to me. Also, real world time stands still while you travel through the nether too.
