Hmm, that's a good suggestion. Build a portal in my current base and then another at my new base location. Can I just build two in the real world or do I have to build one, enter the Nether, go to where I want to get to and then build the other one in the Nether?
If so I'm going to have to find diamond first. I can cast obsidian right now for the first portal but I've got no way to carry the mats for another portal with me.

Both ways work, but if there is no space in the nether to place the portal both portals will lead to the same portal in the nether, requiring that you build another one in the nether. So going into the nether and digging a tunnel with the proper amount of distance (distance in the nether is shorter than in reality) is the better option.

From the top of a mountain to the bedrock, and I did not run into a single ore until I saw that redstone ore above me. I'm standing on bedrock.
Damn that mineshaft is long . Takes forever to get back up to the surface. Damn I have no life for digging it.

I've had similar problems before INVedit. All 5 of my worlds are the most devoid of anything bar dirt, sand, stone and coal that i've seen. I spent days when I first got the game hollowing out places and looking for natural caves.
I can tell you that i've had enough diamond over all 5 worlds to count on my fingers. Redstone has been relatively common lower down but i'm crap at circuitry. Iron has come in groups of 3 and I usually die just after I gather it and have creepers, zombies and skellies guarding my stuff when I return.
I just had the worst ore luck ever until I started using INVedit. Suddenly, everytime I find a cave it has about a stack of iron in it just on the walls in plain sight. It's like buses; they don't turn up when you need one, but when you don't they all come at the same time.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I've only found diamond once. JUST enough to make a pick. Then I died because a creeper knocked me into lava :(

So far, about a dozen, but I usually delete them if I die. Dunno, it's just so frustrating to die in this game.

It is, not so much if you get killed by a monster, as you can go back and reclaim your items. But if you're killed by lava, it's over, everything is GONE!!!

Yay, I found my first dungeon! The sound of a thousand screaming spiders gave it away more than anything, but it was confirmed when I found a block of mossy cobblestone. So, now I have to figure out how I want to clear out this dungeon and claim its prize. Ho hum. And the sad thing is I already used up the three diamond I found on a pick, because I'm tired of replacing my iron and stone ones.

I was trying to use the lava I found around the place to create a magma moat (dropping magma source blocks down the side of my castle at occasional intervals), and somehow I fell about twenty five blocks down into my moat, killing me and destroying all my stuff :(

Hold shift while walking along an edge, stops you from falling and you can go off the side a bit.
Always sucks when all your stuff is gone, you don't even have the fun of running past the other two creepers to get to the crater with your stuff in it. I guess keep spares in chests instead of walking around with all of it or something.

I didn't actually find enough diamond to have spares is the sad part.
Also, anyone else use lava and water source blocks to farm extra cobblestone, or is that just me being a loser?

I use lava source blocks and water to farm obsidian... I normally have too much cobblestone.

Yeah, that's how I made my first portal. IT was easier to get lava source blocks and water (from an infinite spring) than it was to actually try to mine obsidian.

I actually have a picture of my cobblestone "farm" back on page 7 (with the rest of the base on page 3) so you're not the only one with one.
They're useful for when I don't feel like getting lost underground for a while, but so much slower.

Given the shear volume of cobblestone I generate when mining a cobblestone generator just looks like way more trouble than its worth.

Exactly, I'm a dwarf in that almost all of my homes are deep underground or are in hollowed out mountains so I have too much cobblestone.

I'm an above ground builder (mostly) so I do tend to have a cobblestone generator for emergency use. I don't really need them that often though as I'm very much a hole digger.

Plus an update made it to where you required more light than you did need. Went in mine horde of zombies!

I hated that update (you needed more torches the further underground you went), and just sat in my little 2 story house that was also a tree and wheat farm and went insane due to my house being surrounded by creepers, zombies, skellies and spiders (before they could climb walls) so I couldn't leave, and my house being built on top of a creeper and skellie infested tunnel system.

Same here essentially. I think people thought Notch lost his mind with that update

Well if you press f3 it shows your co-ordinants,with Y for height(depth)
Between 0-32 is where you find gold, diamond is a little closer to the teens region.
I found 9 diamonds and a good few Gold
I made the gold into blocks,so I can start building my own "GOLDEN THRONE". But really apart from a clock, gold is only good for that.
I play on peaceful in my main world, since all I want is just to build a nice little town.
