I recently converted and painted up this mini as a Salamanders version of Sergeant Telion (good ol' "counts as").

For further rantings on the conversion, you can visit my blog.

You're supposed to keep that area of you cool, that's why they hang down outside of the body. He should watch himself!
But seriously that's awesome, love the lighting effects on him, the orange/green combo works really well, and the cloak blending into the scenery is a nice touch! Could we see his face maybe?

Oh man, LOVE the lighting effect. Not to mention its always a pleasure to African American Salamanders instead of BLACK Salamanders.

They did, but then they decided they wanted it to be more like they had some form of obscure reverse albinism.

There is no America or Africa in the 41st millenium...

"Black" is the appropriate term.

...just saying.

Blame Michael Jackson for that one!

Anyway, it's a nice model, and a nice change from the "possessed salamanders" of late.

In some branches of the US military they have taken a stab at political correctness with the term "Dark Green"

Like the Conversion BTW. I like that you made the cloak an actual camoflage to fit the terrain and not the ordinary green scales of the Salamanders.

Cheers

While I agree with the above statements that it is a GREAT paintjob (I love the lava effects...I can't ever get reflected light to look like that...) I disagree on the point about the skin color. The book says that Salamanders have black (jet black) skin. It isn't a racist thing, it has nothing to do with africans or real life 'black' people. It's like Space Wolves having long canine teeth. It's a genetic mutation. I also understand (since I play Salamanders) how hard it is to get the jet black skin to look right.

But other than that, this looks great! I was actually working on converting a Salamanders Telion myself. Quick question though: what did you use to file the Ultramarines symbol off of his bolter? The ones on the wrists and the ones on the shoulder posed to difficulties for me, but I am afraid to tackle the one on his gun for fear of damaging it.

Actually, it depends on which book you read. The most recent incarnation of the Space Marine Codex (and some of the novels, from what I've heard) do indeed designate Salamander skin as "Jet Black" with red eyes. Kind of daemonic even.

However, the Salamanders have been around for twenty-five years, and Games Workshop has, in that time, been very inconsistent with their skin colors (they've even had Caucasian Salamanders in official books- along with a good number that have African-type skin).

Now, when Games Workshop decided that Salamanders were jet black, they did not provide us with even a single example. Vulkan He'Stan is one of the very few special characters wearing a helmet, and there aren't any Salamanders with their helmets off anyway.

I'm an old gamer, and when fluff is inconsistent like that, I usually just pick the version I like the most, rather than the one that is most current.

I used a sprue cutter for both of them, although I had to smooth out the wrist symbol with a hobby knife also.
