Subject: Jackanory's Scientific Scavvies. Update - Mod scavvy conversion 21/05/2012

Ok well what started off as me having a cool idea of a new way of making a scaly for a scavvy gang is starting to turn into a full gang.
The idea behind them is that their mutations are as much caused by underhive life as they are by the experiments carried out by their leader. There are gonna be lots of grafts, sciencey looking tubes and cogwheels and stuff on these guys to represent that. I'm thinking of incorporating some sort of aberrant machine worship into their fluff too but that's undecided so far. It would work well with my devout machine-god worshiping sm chapter that I'm thinking through at the moment though (as in they'd make perfect enemies!).
All of the models are wip so please bear with me!
Ok well here's the guy that started it:
My first scaly. Guess he's a bit larger than most but I'm primarily interested in the modelling side so game rules don't bother me so much.
For fairly obvious reasons I call this next guy Inflatus. I found a bunch of infantry weapons at the flgs for only ¥200 (about £1.40 or $2.00). Unfortunately they're ww2 German but my guys aren't really Nazis so it's all good:
Very early wip with concept art of a sinister mofo I call Gonk:
Sorry he's sideways but I did all this on my iPhone so it's a little awkward!
c&c encouraged.

Great start with the sculpts
Scalies are big aren't they? so that he's okay imho
nice to see some accompanying concept art too!
Would redraw the plasma gun as it looks hurried compared to the rest, but otherwise love it!

Cool thanks very much for the kind words! I'll get some more shots of the scaly when I get back home tonight. I just realised that the one I posted really doesn't capture the pose very well, he's a lot more dynamic in real life, looks like he's really striding. I'm working on some new concept art too so I'll get that up when it's tweaked.
Yeah the plasma gun is pretty rushed but I think he might get a Luger after all anyway, maybe some sort of rifle strapped to his back (if I find room next to the massively oversized toxic canister).
Glad you guys like it!

Thank you
I'm digging the mad vibe going on here. They are sweet. I like the wrong proportions on them , really makes them look like mutants. Please give us a close up of the gun the scaly is carrying, did you make it yourself?
How did you make the mesh on Gonk's base? (If you tell me I will probably steal it). Please don't forget to put the riveted metal plate on Gonk's belly when you sculpt him.
Cheers
Peter

The mesh is just cut out from a fine mesh sieve that I bought in a ¥100 shop (70p or $1) the problem with it is that it is just weaved together so it comes apart quite easily. It works better in large sections and a bit of super glue helps too.
The gun is just made out of some roughly cut bits of thick plasticard with a clock part barrel. Again I raided the ¥100 shop to get a cheap clock to cannibalise. Oh and GS rivets.
Peter your scavvies were a big inspiration so I'm glad you like mine! Love that sinister vibe.
Got home late last night so didn't get a chance to take anymore photos but they should be forthcoming!
Thanks for the comments!

Cool! I have a vague idea of what they are from various fora but I've never read any of the Warhammer literature other than what they put in the rule books and used to put in White Dwarf.
I'll take it as a compliment all the same

Haha I don't have that much time to be honest! I was lucky enough to get an early finish at work yesterday and managed to get a lot of work done on Gonk but I generally sculpt in hour-long bursts.
Sloooow progress!
I'm glad I'm inspiring people and supplying steal-worthy ideas! (I'm just dreading the moment when you come up with the same thing 10x better).

Thank you!
Still a lot of work to do on Gonk. I supposed these are the lowest visible layers for the most part. I tend to sculpt in layers like that as I find it easier o get more defined lines between them. So I still need to give him his wife-beater (don't worry he doesn't have a wife), helmet, bandana and hands and finish his boots and then add miscellaneous other bitz. Here's where I am with him so far:
The weapons and toxic canister have just been blu-tacked into place so far.
By the way do any of you have any tips regarding his left, claw hand? I find that GS can be tricky when attempting to sculpt individual, "free" fingers that aren't braced against something like a weapon or a wall.

Looks good so far.
My GS skills are somewhat lacking, but could you make a basic armature for the hand with fine wire, or perhaps slivers of plasticard and put a layer of gs over?

For what it is worth, that looks a lot like an X-Man called Marrow. She could pull the anomalous growths out and use them as melee weapons.
There is also a real malady called fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva that is essentially connective tissue turning into bone. There is a skeleton at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia of someone that had it. The growths were more 'fluid' and 'muscle-y' if that makes any sense. That might be something to think of for shapes of the growths or for a different model.

Damn I got caught out! Yeah I'm aware of Marrow actually though I wasn't thinking of her when I drew him (well probably somewhere in my subconscious). I just scribble stuff down and see what comes out. It seemed right at the time to shove spiky bits coming out of him.
I'm also aware of that illness but I think I prefer him to be spiky than bumpy. Cheers for the suggestion though!
Don't you guys worry about the metal plate! I'm looking forward to that :d

Plus fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva tends to eventually stop you from moving at all as more and more tissue ossifies. Which wouldn't be much fun for a necromunda character!
I really like your models and concepts, can't wait to watch this develop. Whereabouts are Gonk's weapons from?

They're from a 1/35 selection of WW2 infantry weapons by Tamiya. Just found a couple of bagged sprues in the local hobby shop's junk kit box for the equivalent of £1.40:

Oh wicked updates. I missed them
Jackanory - Thanks. Glad you like mine. Mesh from a sieve, I'm going to the £ shop.
That scaly's gun is awesome, the crank is a great touch and the fact it is ramshackle adds to the mutant theme. Also the arm brace is just perfect.
Gonk is looking good. Cannot wait to see more details. As for sculpting fingers/claws I'd use thin wire. I did it once for a pointing finger and it turned out well.
I get this fantastic punky vibe from the concept sketches, so I reckon they should be wearing tight skinny jeans. Just imagine Gonk's belly hanging over them. Looking at your concept sketches the thing that really grabs me is the ridiculously thin legs. They work really well and I think you should carry it over to the models. With the Gonk sculpt his legs look normal sized. So were the legs in the sketches just for stylistic purposes rather than effect?
With the new bony guy I reckon a bone mohawk would look cool, though rather than growing bone he should be growing razor sharp metal. (it would fit with the scaly theme as he has metal engine stacks growing out of his shoulders)
I like the shotgun and Machine gun from the sprue....I hope some really hard mutants get them.
Thank you again
Peter

That's cool you think they look punk! For a while all I listened to (more or less) was hardcore punk and metalcore so I guess I had that aesthetic in mind, to an extent, when I was drawing. Might have to get out the tartan paint when I finally get to that stage but who knows when that will be?! This whole scratch sculpting thing is ridiculously time consuming.
Yeah I actually went back and redid Gonk's legs, they're a lot more like the picture now, almost down to the wire in some parts.
I also started on his claw hand and did the wire armature thing, which has really worked. I used the same wire that the mesh is made out of so was able to get some really thin fingers going on, looks kind of like some sort of amphibian hand.
I'm not actually sure of who's going to get which weapon as I'm primarily a hobbyist rather than a gamer so I don't know the rules or which weapon load outs are the best. Anyone fancy writing up a decent starting gang for me? Even though I'm not really planning on gaming with them any time soon it would be nice if I had the option in future.

As for rules sod it rule of cool. All the weapons so far could easily fall into some of the necromunda categories. But if you are going to have some mutants then I'd suggest you have a look at the list (two heads, extra arms, eye stalks and wings are apparently the best)
Looking forward to seeing Gonk again. Keep up the excellent work.
