In my experience folks are highly resistant to 'fun'. It's like in the Matrix - 'the first matrix was a paradise but nobody would accept the programming'...

I did a Kill Team tournament recently where 'fun' was the primary goal but it still ended with a lot of issues and hurt feelings and ranting on the forum etc...

The difficulty lies in the moderation and 'scoring' on the event.

Anyway, that said, I always love Kill Team for 'fun' games...

I have never played in a team tournament, and with that said, I want to...

The ones that I have played, my favorite would have to be escalation.

Something like 500; 750; 1,000; 1,250; 1,500; 1,750; 1,850; 2,000

Over the course of the year.

The Adepticon Team Tournament was a blast. One of the most fun 40k related things I have ever done.

I've run a couple of charity tournaments that have been great. The prizes are usually for best sport & random deaths (ie, the first person to kill one of their own models).

It's usually a benefit for local foodbanks. Every game, you can donate a can of food to get a re-roll. I did up to 4 re-rolls a game.

It really encourages people to bring armies that you don't usually see because battles are not scored. You also have a hell of a time when you throw in fun rules (instead of re-rolls, the cans can be deployed as terrain).

Excellent idea!

Some fun tournament ideas I've had:

Retro tournament: Any codex or armylist released since 3rd ed is legal. Play your feral orks, lost and the damned or trait marines again.

Mixed pairs: Everyone brings a 1k list (HQ, 1-3 troop, 0-1 elite/heavy/fast). You get a random partner in the first round. Subsequent rounds, highest current points is paired with lowest current points (and so on).

if you want to emphasize fun, then don't call it a tournament...call it a Day of Gaming.

I like as mentioned before find ways to reward random silly things rather than crushing opponents.

The food bank idea is something I am considering stealing...

If you make an event doubles, that helps a lot for fun too. Cause everyone always ends up with someone on their side!

Team tournies are a lot of fun, but if you're hosting one, remember that team games take a lot longer than regular games. The random teams idea sounds cool too. IMO, normal tournies are also a blast, it's after all 1-2 days of gaming and socialization with other gamers. A great place to make new gamer friends and find opponents. Overall, 90% of my tournament games have been very fun

this escalation league was freakin awesome for our shop.

as far as a tournament goes, id like to see a team tournament where you dont know who your teammate will be prior to the tournament...i.e. bring a list and you will be randomly paired with another player to make your team. maybe bring 2 lists that you can choose from to better gel with your potential teammate.

I like the Idea and will probably steal it although i rather they just bring one army list and see how skillfully they can win with a random teammate.

I agree, don't call it a tournament if it isn't one.

But as for fun tournaments, Adpeticon's team tourny was a blast.

Oh yeah, and I once played in a swiss pairing 1,000 pt tounry on 4' x 4' tables with missions straight out of the book, no comp, no paint scores and it was honestly the most fun tournament I have played.

Fast games, everyone knew the missions and rules so there was nearly no rules issues, the armies were to small to really power game with and we got to play like 6 games in a short day of gaming, really, really fun. Simple and easy was the best way to describe it, everyone had a blast.

Going to have to agree with other people on this one. I find most team tournaments to be extremely fun.

Having a friend around and still getting to game with new people is always great.

Also, escalation leagues are usually great for clubs/stores.
They really bring in the people to start gaming there. And if they enjoy the experience I usually see people showing up a lot even after the league is done.

Its usually a great way to bring back gamers to your store and get them to start playing there again.

I've not played in a 'teams' event at my club - ever (but they are all teenagers and they have no concept of "teamwork").

They are currently running an escalation league (first game is at 500pts, next is at 1000, etc) but the games are scheduled for when I'm out of town, so I can't play in it.

I've run campaigns for them, and they enjoyed the games more when there was a consequence for losing.

I like a well run campaign, or combat patrol games. Outside of this, I like to play larger non-apoc games.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.
