Easy question here.... are the majority of people converting them or is there a bit out there that can serve as the backpack needed?

I have been searching GW'sfew remaining bits and they are putting the current "new" backpacks on everything. IF you look at some of the older models perhaps the rogue trader figures they have a different backpack. Even in C: SM there are pics in the Sicarius company of different backpacks.
My guess is that conversion is the only way.... that is unless we can get some out of Chapterhouse!

Oh damn, my bad I thought you were asking about jump packs. Well i know GW sells the Armor through the ages box. Maybe you can get an idea from that

Well FW has some, in their Raven Guard upgrade pack...
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space_Marine-Infantry-Accessories/RAVEN-GUARD-SPACE-MARINES-UPGRADE-PACK.html
Of course, that´s 16£ for five of them, and a lot of bits that you may or may not need...
But it says that you also get the helmets, torsos and shoulder pads for Mk 6 suits in the set, so this may be just the kit for you!

Hmmm, didn't notice they had the old backpacks. I am not sure If I can bring myself to buying that pack just for backpacks. I had contemplated picking up one pack to add some Raven Guard to my Deathwatch but multiple packs may be out of my price range, and I don't think many would jump on forgeworld pieces if they were missing all their backpacks.
EDIT: I also just noticed that all the backpacks have the Raven Guard symbol on them as well.

If you are looking for pre-heresy backpacks they can be found on bike squads. Or at least that is where I got mine that I used. If GW repackaged them then you are SOL.

Actually, as the proud of owner of an all rogue trader model pre heresy army, I can confirm, the forgeworld backpacks are the ones you want if you want them to be pre heresy aka RTB01 looking. Also, the metal raptor backpacks are not pre heresy ones, the old turbo fan ones were the originals, modelling wise. Luckily, one of the bitz companies makes them , though they are a bit large.
Good find on the FW backpacks though, I was unaware there were legit ones to be had, despite the cost.

No one looks at the back of minis except for the owner. I wouldnt worry about backpacks too much. Concentrate on the front of the mini.
The old style armour is just a way of GW saying "these look really crappy, lets make some new ones and call them MK**". I would just make my own versions with the newer models. Some of the helmets look ok though.
