Here's a tutorial for breaking down, lighting up and reconstructing a Monolith. For the rest of my conversions, feel free to browse around the rest of my site (also linked in my sig.)

http://themagnetpro.blogspot.com/2010/06/monolith-resurrection-and-illumination.html

I'd repost it along with the pics on here, but I'm incredibly lazy... Later days!

Thanks, I'm happy with how that turned out as well! I'll probably go with a Gauss coming out if/when I buy another one, as I'm out of Destroyer arm bits..

I did something similiar, though used LED s instead of the cathode. Deconstructed a used 'lith and dumped some on sale Christmas lights (AC powered boo) and three LED s in the globe on a switch powered by a nine volt. I have to agree that the warrior coming through the portal is a very nice touch. Wish I would have thought of that! Here's my dakka pics.

Hey, I noticed in both of the Tutorials that when cutting out some parts you guys were forcing the knife through the plastic.

I would recommend a practice used by Bench Jewelers called Piercing. Drill a hole, then use a Jeweler's Saw to cut out the shape.

You can find a video of this technique on youtube by searching: Art Jewelry Piercing.

Good luck!

Very cool Monolith!

I'm curious though, when you mention stripping the model, I understand the simple green, but why the oven at 170 degrees F? I'm wondering if it makes the paint flake off better... I'd love to know!

Yes please answer that question. Also, did you put the tupperware in the oven?? Please explain

My Computer

Actually, yes, it does. I'm surprised by how many people don't know about this.

If you soak a plastic model in Simple Green at whatever your lowest oven's setting is (mine is 170F, not sure how much higher is safe) for an hour or so a lot of the model's paint will fall off just like it does with metal models. It still takes some scrubbing here and there but it consumes a lot less of your time waiting and also stripping than going with room temperature.

EDIT:
Yeah, tldr. I put the tupperware in the oven for the notes above. Again, I'm not sure how high above 170F is safe for more than an hour, but 170F I can say is safe (though you should of course wait a bit before dipping your hands in the hot Simple Green to take the models out or you'll get a nasty burn if you're not careful!)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Dragon Warrior, good find! I'll look into this next time I have a similar project!

Damn, for a plastic pyramid, that thing is jaw droppingly terrifying... It's a pity I don't play Necrons or I'd be doing that (or attempting to) to all my models. Fantastic.

Thanks for all the compliments!

@Element206, it's really not too bad. I thought the same thing when I saw the tutorial from the first guy that did this. But after taking it and making it my own it wasn't too much work. Removing the bottom plates was by far the roughest part, but that's because I wanted to save the leftover pieces for basing. If you don't care to do that you won't have to be as careful and could use a dremel tool to cut them out. But the rest is a cinch!

That's so sick.

I'd attempt this but seems like it is quite time consuming and make the already ponderous to carry monolith - even more ponderous.

Holy crow if i get into crons that is a must great work man.

They shall be my finest warriors, these men who give of themselves to me. Like clay I shall mold them, And in the furnace of war I shall forge them. They will be of iron will and steely muscle. In great armor shall I clad them, and with the mightiest of guns will they be armed. They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines, and they shall know no fear.
