Hi all

I have a question that may seem silly to most people, but it's SERIOUSLY bothering me

I'm in the process of selling a lot of my Space Marines to start a Chaos army

In the process of selling, I sold 3 vindicators, 4 land raiders, and a predator

It didn't even occur to me to save money by converting them haha... was that the better option or is it best just to start anew?

The only thing I can think of is that they were built primarily with SM parts so it would be hard to pull off

Let me know what you all think, and for my sake agree with me!!!!!! haha just kidding speak your mind

I would have done what you did and start from scratch. Ends up a little more expensive, but saves you from having to strip and repaint and allows you to basically put it together better.

I did that recently with a couple of Chaos predators. They were in usable condition, but I wasn't happy with them for a few reasons. So I sold them for about half retail price. Jumped onto a discount online retailer and bought three new Predators (bulk pack that's no longer available, sadly) - the whole thing ended up costing me less than buying a single new Predator from GW.

Now I get to start from scratch and add all the little details that I would have added to the other ones had they not already been assembled.

Yeah Cheexsta that's what I was thinking. I already had glued on a bunch of Imperial emblems and what not, so it would have been a major pain to get all that crap off. I guess I'll just use the money I got for all the vehicles TOWARDS new ones haha

Imperial iconography can work in your favor, depending on your fluff. Freshly corrupted Chaos factions would still have twisted vestiges of their Imperial roots. I would've added some spikes, chains, gore, and chaos icons to the mix, paying special attention to visibly defacing the preexisting iconography. Chain down the wings of the aquila, up the skull-factor and make it bloody, etc.

That said, you've already sold them, so it's a rather moot point. No huge loss, though. Get yourself some dedicated Chaos models, but if you find a really good deal on something Imperial, don't be afraid to convert!

That's true Oadie, and I was sort of thinking that as well... however it wouldn't mix too well with all the other units in my army haha

But I do have some left over Chaos parts from the vehicles, so I can make the new ones even nastier and meaner looking I guess

Thanks for all the input guys!

It would also depend on what sort or army you're doing.
The right paint job could do the trick.

What is the theme of your army?

the theme of my army is The Purge/World Eaters, and my old SM army was Raven Guard...

The two don't really go hand-in-hand in terms of them turning renegade, otherwise that would have been a great idea

And Scar I'm gonna add so many spikes it's gonna hurt to pick the model up! haha

For some reason, this answer bothers me. Chaos aren't just spikes, but that's the answer everyone seems to put for the how to make something chaosy question. Nothing against you, I just don't like this cookie cutter answer.

As for the topic at hand, I would have converted them, but I really like converting stuff. (Though I've just gotten into it.)

Look at the Chaos Vehicle sprue. It has on it: Spikes, chains, various plates and skulls. Add these to vehicles, and you're set.

As for removing Imperial stuff, just scrape it off with a knife. Don't worry about the vehicle, as you should patch over where the Imperial paraphernalia was with plasticard.

I think that it's not so much a case of loyalist vehicles being so easily converted, but more that the Chaos vehicles are basically identical anyway. All you get is the Chaos vehicle accessories sprue instead of the Imperial one.

Having picked up a Chaos Vindicator for my Imperial Fists (they tend to go cheaper than loyalists on ebay) I was quite surprised at how little they differ from their non-traitorous counterparts. In fact, as far as I could tell you'd pretty much have to convert even the Chaos vehicles to truly remove the vestiges of their loyalist origins. It seems that the Chaos Land Raider is also stuck with aquilas on its tracks.

I certainly wouldn't rely on the Chaos vehicle sprue alone to build a proper Chaos vehicle. Forgeworld sell replacement tracks for the Land Raider, though I would certainly settle for some corrective modelling knife surgery myself. The legion specific doors would be very tempting. Beyond that I'd try to put together some personal decorations appropriate to the god or legion the vehicle serves.

Depends. since you already sold them, The possibility is gone. However, I find it's quite easy to convert them. I play black legion, and all I have to do is add some spikes and spray it black.

Wow Luna, those are really cool.

I still have both my dreadnoughts, so I suppose I could convert those

My Predator and Vindicators are gone, but I haven't received payment yet for the Land Raiders...

Maybe I could keep 1 of the 4 and give the guy a discount or something haha

Everyone here is so helpful!

Luna kind of hit it perfectly, it's just not adding spikes and chains and skulls, and I think that's GW's fault for making everyone think that.

Chaos doesn't work like orks where you just add more dakka (and crap) to the tank, you need chaos Iconography, the chaos marines crew and some greenstuff.

The Chaos vehicle accessory frame helps a lot. You can also have bodies of guard/marines/anything imperial chained to the chassis.
