Plasma cannons should be choice A., not plasma guns.

If more of us valued food and cheer and 40K over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

I like plasma cannons as the tank still has some punch even after the battle cannon is destroyed. It's expensive, but fun.

Inside that little light in your refridgerator

Depends on what you want it to do really. If you want a tank that will plow into the enemy lines like a thunderbolt, then heavy flamers.
You wanna mince infantry and light vehicles whilst keeping costs down? Heavy bolters.
You want the most versatile choice - allowing you to take heavy infatry and light vehicles? Plasma cannons.
You want a cheap(ish) vanilla tank that comes with it's buddies, whilst not hampering the rest of your army choices? Nekked.

I vote naked, becuase that is the way I have, do and will run them.

It depends on the tank for me demolishers have plasmas or flamers but with LRBT im just as likely to add plasmas take HB or run it naked, as for the other kinds i only use the Executioner and there's only one option for that

Heavy bolters. Plain and simple, classic. A friend of mine's first LR, a LR Punisher; he gave it multi-melta sponsons, and I was like "WTF."

I run my Russ's in teams of 2 with one nekkid and the other with heavy bolter sponsons. Sometimes Ill throw in a third but usually that one is a specialized one so its armed for a specific task and runs with the other two so they can act as bullet magnets.

Its better to be dead and cool than alive and uncool.

If I was in your situation I wouldn't be "WTF" because he had multi-meltas, I would be like "WTF" because he actually took a Punisher.

Naked. Adding bells and whistles can get prohibitively expensive. Better to have two stock Russes than one pimp mobile that draws all the fire.

I flip between running them with Plasma Cannon sponsons or nekkid. Plasma Cannons help give it more firepower (Even on the move you can still fire one, gotta love Lumbering Behemoth) and give it more low ap goodness, but can be a bit expensive. Nekkid keeps it cheap but still able to kill things.

Naked. You save enough points to buy an extra tank.... and would you rather have a few plasma cannons you have to sit still to fire all on one or two tanks... or would you rather add another AV14 hull with a S8 AP3 Pie Plate? I know what I like.

Really, any of these could be good.

I think it's kind of sad that they made heavy bolter sponsons so expensive that taking them with nothing but a hull heavy bolter seems worthwhile. I'd never take a russ with a lascannon alone, as for only 5 more points I could give it something that compliments the role of the battlecannon on the sponsons.

I'm kind of surprised at the lackluster love for the 3x heavy flamer russ, though.

You'll never get to use them all. The enemy would have to surround your tank and somehow not kill it, as you cannot move and fire more than one. A hull HF does just fine, the sponson ones are useless.

IMO, plasma is the only sponson worth taking. It's only 20 pts more than the bolters, and they are so much better.

Just picked one up, standard russ with HB sponsons and hull las cannon. $20 but in need of a depaint (currently taking a Simple Green bath) so if ya'll could say I just bought the most effective options it'd be really nice.

Edit> Bonus, just discovered the hull las cannon is magnetized.

Plasma sponsons go well with regular Russes, Demolishers AND Executioners IMO, and because of LB, you can still move and fire if the situation gets critical without loosing too much firepower.

I can't see a reason for heavy flamer sponsons EVER! The enemy would have to swamp the tank with troops so it could burn them all in the following turn while remaining stationary. They would be a lot better if they were just regular flamers so they at least could be used as defensive weapons.

Looks like I see a similar mindset, this is how I look at sponsons:

If you plan to move around and get into some close tank support or need to go get those hard to reach irritating models, go naked. Some thought of a Eradicator/Hvy flamer if hunting troops, Vanquisher/Lascannon for tanks/high toughness baddies. Demolisher just does double duty all around for either option. Can only see fielding the Executioner like this due to points.

If you plan to occasionally move only to get a better shooting angle, the heavy bolters are a good all rounder and you do not cry too much if they do not get to fire. If you intend to have it a vehicle killer, then the multi-meltas are the way to go but you better be expecting landraiders (darn monoliths do not count) or something to get them to pay for themselves.

If you are a big ugly tank that plans to stay parked and make like a bunker, heavy plasma is a hard thing to beat but what a juicy target you will be (Really think Executioner with these is the way to go but 230 points?! ouch! Battle tank cheaper alternative). Short range turret options are not a good choice for this build unless you expect the enemy in your face at turn one.

Try as I might, I just cannot see heavy flame sponsons being helpful. If you get to use them, the enemy is either beside you or REALLY close and is an uncomfortable situation to be in. This would be your one and probably only chance to get them to pay for themselves.

Maybe HF sponsons if you are desperate to not have to point the front in a different direction? Reaching, but about the only position I can think of. Maybe if you have a lot of bubble wrap, at 4-6" out?

It's too late after they assaulted you, you have to move to get good coverage.

Naked.

I'm a cheapskate when it comes to my armour. I may opt for plasma on a demolisher or eradicator. But when it comes down to it, I like ploughing ahead with one main weapon!

The only time I could see MMs being of any real use is if you're playing hide and seek with enemy armor in really dense terrain, like a COD field.

I second HoverBoy's comment on magnets!
