With the change to one man stores, the two local black shirts have ended their eight year run with G.W..
Before they moved back to their home states, and start a new chapter in their lives, me and a buddy thought we would get in one more Apocalypse game.
The game would be two on two 2500 points a person. A nice size for an afternoon.

Time for the army lists.

Hoff's list.

roughly,
Leman Russ Demolisher Squadron
Leman Russ Demolisher Squadron
Command Squad
Leman Russ Squadron, with two Demolishers and Commander Pask in a Punisher
30 man Vostroyan blob squad with Commissar
multiple Heavy Weapon Teams with Las Cannons
Two or three veteran squads

I did not get a picture of all of his army before set up. Here is what I got.

Jay's list.

3 Baneblades
Stormsword
Stormlord
Macharius Vulcan

My list.

2 Hive Tyrants with 2x devourers
6 Hive Guard
3 Zoanthropes
4x3 Warrior's with Deathspitters & Rending
3 Raveners
2 Carnifexs
Bio Shock Brood with 3 Trygons

Ted's list.

Hive Tyrant with wings
3 Zoanthropes
4 warrior's 1 with Venom Cannon
16 Stealers
20 Hormagaunts
4 Raveners
10 Gargoyles
Carnifex

and......

a Hierophant.

We rolled off for deployment zones. The Guard players won and chose the largest zone. Those tanks are going to be far away.
We than bid deployment times, our one minute, to there 3 minutes. We would deploy first and get first turn.
We left the Raveners, Stealers, Tyrant, Gargoyles, and Bio shock brood in reserves. We then Deployed the Hive Guard and Phant on our left, The warriors and Guants on our right, and the Tyrants, Fexs, and Zoeys in the middle.

They deployed the Super Heavies on their right, infantry in the middle, and the Russ Squadrons on their left on some hills.

First turn.

Ted uses the Blind Barrage Stratagem to block line of sight to most of our army. The russ Squadron on our right, and the stormsword still have line of sight.
I then use Strategic Redeployment. I move the Hive Guard to the right side for side armour on the Russ's, move the Warriors in front of the Phant to threaten the infantry, and move everything else as close as I can without crossing the Blind Barrage.

Because of the Blind Barrage and Strategic Redeployment the only shooting was the Phant at the Stormsword. 16 strength 10 shots latter, back in the basket.

In their turn the Russ Squadron with line of sight causes multiple wounds on the Tyrants, fexs, and Zoeys in the middle. And an Orbital Strike puts some wounds on the Phant, and kills 6 of the 12 Warriors in the front.

Turn two.

The Gargoyles, and a unit of Raveners, walk on on the far left by the Phant hoping to assault some infantry. And the Bio Shock Brood deep strikes behind the Super Heavies.

The Hive Guard unleash 12 strength 8 shots on the Demolisher Squadron.

Were did they go?

The Zoeys shoot at Pasks Squadron destroying one Demolisher and taking the main gun off of another.

The Warriors and Raveners kill some Guard in the middle, and the Bio Shock Brood send 24 twin linked strength 5 shots into the rear armour of a Baneblade and destroy it.

The Guard start out with another Orbital Strike, killing 3 Hive Guard, three Warriors, and 6 Guants.

The Super heavies unload on the Phant and only cause 4 more wounds.
Then Pask and the Demolisher Squadron, along with the infantry let fly. When the dust settles 2 hive tyrants, a Carnifex, 3 Warriors, and 4 Zoanthropes lay dead.

Where is the middle of our army?

Turn three.

The last unit of raveners walk on on our left to move into assault. The Stealers come on in the back corner to take objectives. And the Flyrant deep strikes by the Bio Shock brood.
Everything else moves up as fast as their little claws will take them to get in assault range. including the Phant who forgoes shooting to run towards the blob squad.

And the Bio Shock Brood moves to assault some Super Heavies.

The Heirophant assaults the blob squad and gets 31 attacks ( one on each enemy in combat) and kills......3??? The raveners wipe out the squads they assault. That leaves the Trygons.

The first Trygon hits with all 7 attacks, pens with 6, destroying the tank. I roll on the damage table...Apocalyptic Explosion! One trygon take a wound.

The second Trygon attacks 7 hits, 6 pens, 2ND tank destroyed. I roll on the damage table...Apocalyptic Explosion! Non of the Trygons are wounded.

The third Trygon attacks 7 hits, 6 pens, Stormlord destroyed. I roll on the damage table...Apocalyptic Explosion! The trygons are unhurt, but 23 Guardsmen die in the blast.

My dice are commandeered buy the Guard players, And we now have to use An Iphone dice rolling app.

On the Guard players turn the Demolisher Squdron shoots down the Tyrant knowing the Trygons are not in assault range. Then the rest of the Guard and the Macharius Vulcan try to finish off the Carnifexs threatening the Russ Squadrons, but they both survive with one wound. Last but not least VORTEX GRENADE!

The Heirophant has three wounds left. Hoff roles a hit on the scatter dice and roles a three for wounds caused! The Phant goes down.

Turn four.

The Stealers spread out to take two objectives.

The last Carnifex assaults Pasks Squadron And destroys it.

The Raveners and Gargoyles assault and finish off the infantry.

And a Trygon assault's the Vulcan and removes its main gun.

The only thing the Guard have left operational is the Demolisher Squadron who kills the last Carnifex out of spite

Turn five.

The Trygon finishes off the Vulcan in assault (no Explosion this time.)

The Raveners move to assault the last russ Squadron, and do no damage.

On the guard turn the last Russ Squadron refuses to give up and takes down a Trygon.

But soon after they are overrun by Raveners.

The Tyranids ended up victorious, But it will be some time before this splinter fleet can recoup its loses.

And with that I say good buy to two great guys, and great hobby store managers.

That is frickin hilarious dude. ROFL. Super-good dice rolling on your part. If not for the Hierophant, I think the nids would've been owned. The problem with the guards is that they have too many super-heavies but not enough screening units.

Just curious, did you play the hierophant with the newer 3++ Warp Field or the older 6++? BTW, the hierophant has 16 S10 shots, not 20.

Very nice but I have some questions

I thought trygons have 6 S5 shots EACH or is that because a bioshock brood like doubles their stats and add's 1S on?

When the Hive guard shot at the leman russ' Wouldn't the first one have blocked LoS to the other 2?

And finally, When your trygons went to attack a tank each, they were out of unit coherency by like 18"! Or do they count as seperate unit's once they deploy?

Awesome pics though mate

Yeah, we figured Jay would bring a ton of super heavies. I almost brought my hierophant to. But where would the fun be in that.

We used the 6+ using a 3+ would be so cheap.

fixed to 16 shots above brain not thinking as fast as typing.

Fixed the strength to five, typing to fast.

The Russ's were a Squadron, so you use the armour value of the closest visible target. Also Hive Guard Impaler Cannons can shoot any target in range regardless of whether there is line of sight or not.

In a Bio shock Brood one of the Trygons has to be a prime. So 6+6+12 for 24 shots.

They do not have to stay in coherency. But if they do stay within 6" of the Prime, and shoot at the same target it is twin linked.
And they get a 4+ invuln. save if within 6". They combine their electrical charge.

Do the legs on Hierphants break easily? I've never worked with Resin before, and those legs look kind of thin.

I have never had them break, but if you leave him standing for an extended period of time they will bend.
Ted can remove his from the base and he stores it feet up.

I have mine mounted on a brass rod with his feet just off the ground.

Isn't the rear armour of a Baneblade 12?

How can S5 shots destroy it?

The triple superheavy tank destruction round was the icing on the cake. Very, very cool battle report. It is a very rare day to see so much quality in models and terrain for an Apoc game. Thanks for sharing.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

If the trygons in a Bio Shock Brood stay within 6" of the prime, it super charges their electrical field. They get a 4+ invuln., their shooting becomes twin linked (if they all shoot at the same target), and 6's auto glance. Thats why they didn't take any pot shots when they assaulted the other three, they couldn't hurt them anymore.

I'm glad you guys didn't take 2 hierophants at 5K. 1 is bad enough. 2 and I don't think they'd ever play you guys again....unless they brought 2 reaver titans!

We are planning another 2 on 2 sometime in October or November with two different guys. This time it will be 5000 a person Nids VS. Eldar. I know one guy has Revanent Titans. Although I'm not sure if they are Armourcast or Forgeworld. That will be a two Hierophant game. And most likely a Barbed and Scythed Hierodule game.

Good battle report, plenty of carnage to wet the whistle
It doesn't suprise me the guard lost, Armour may be the guards strong point but if you can't screen it with infantry it doesn't serve much purpose. Also for dealing with Monstrous and Gargantuan Creatures, the humble heavy weapons squad will perform as well as a battle tanks, I'd rather shoot about 120pts of Guardsmen and score 3 wounds on the beast rather than fire the battle tank and score the same. The tank is much better when used to disintergrate Infantry IMO.

That looks like it was a lot of fun! I like that the last Guard tanks didn't give up, even though it was impossible to win at that point. I'm yet to try Apocalypse, but it seems like it could be a lot of fun if played with some cool folks like the guys you played with. It's definitely a big plus that seemingly everything in this battle was painted too - not much better than some nicely painted armies on a good looking table beating the ever loving crap out of each other.
