Provided they have 2 close combat weapons in their unit profile, then they have +1 melee attack all the time. Doesn't this belong in YMDC?

As a tau player I'll step in and say it like this:
On a charge Kroot have 3 attacks (1 base +1 charging +1 "counts as" two weapons)
In combat they always attack with 2
Kroot are designed to be a very large bullet sponge, kind of a glass cannon. They should lurk behind cover and make the other player think if he really wants to soak ~40 ws4 s4 attacks in order to claim that building/forest/whatever. Of course the alternative is marching across an open field in full view of your gunline...

I see...So would it be worth taking a shaper to give them the 6+ save or would you not spend the points?

I always take them with a shaper for more attacks, and I think he gives leadership...
The 6+ save never matters are all...

I find the shaper is worthless. Essentially you are paying the cost of 3 more kroot (he's 21 points ON TOP of the 7 for the kroot he upgrades) for 2 attacks and 1 ld. If you take him for armor just don't, a 6+ save is worthless and it ups the cost 1ppm.

Oh, you're upgrading a kroot from that...
Good thing I don't use my Tau in tournaments, or I might've been kicked out.

Depending on the size of the unit and the likelihood they’ll be taking a load of panic tests, then paying the upgrade for an extra point of morale can be worth it. The cost per model for a 6+ save is never worth it, though, under any circumstance.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

In close combat, *any* save can make a few wounds difference. It isn't such a worthless upgrade if you're playing your Kroot right.

The save (minus the cost of the Shaper) adds the same total durability to the squad as an equal points value of Kroot. The difference being, the save is almost always ignored by shooting, doubly so if you are in cover, and power weapons and the like can ignore it in close combat. The Kroot on the other hand only have real negatives in presenting a larger squad (which can be good) and add attacks and shooting.
If you want to use the save, it is best to do when the squad is maxed out but even then, an extra squad is better for your points.

The armour save is generally a waste of points, but can be useful when played correctly.
If you anticipate fighting hordes of Orks or Tyranids and you're making the list for a tournament, purchase the save.
The save is most effective when you take a Max Outflanking squad (19 Kroot, Shaper, 12 Hounds). This is because if you get into combat with a large Boyz squad, for example, every wound you inflict will count, and every wound inflicted upon you will count as well. By taking the armour save, you have a good chance of saving 2 or 3 wounds, which will make a huge difference when it comes to combat resolution at the end of the assault phase.
DON'T take the save if you think you're going to be fighting "hero" squads: things like Howling Banshees, 10 man Space Marine Assault Squads, Honour Guard, etc. Here you'll only be wasting the points, because if you don't obliterate them in close combat with your hounds before they can attack, then you've already lost the combat.
