I'm going to be magnetizing my Leman Russes in the very near future (Punishers for fun games, Demolishers for more serious ones), but I'm not sure what size magnets I need.

I've already decided to go with K&J Magnetics (http://www.kjmagnetics.com/), I'm just unclear as to which size I need.

Has anyone done this type of magnet job before? What size and type of magnets do you suggest?

Also, any tips for a first-time magnetizer?

Thanks everyone!

the 1/8 of an inch diameter works best as you can use extras for arms and what not. the thickness is up to you I use 1/16 of an inch and just use more magnets. for the demolisher/punisher two is fine.

I use these for heavy applications guns and metal

1/8 is fine. I use a pair on a Vindicator to hold the bulldozer blade on

I did this with one of the older Demolisher kits quite recently and I used 2mm diameter 1mm thick magnets which worked perfectly. One thing I did have to do was to put modelling putty inside the mount that fits within the main body of the turret as it's pretty thin. One magnet in there and one in all of the turrets and I can field it as whichever type I want.

While I go by metric, 1/8th roughly equates to 3mm, so it should be fine. That's what I use for all mine. It really depends on what you're intending to use it on. If it is something that isn't going to move about alot by virtue o its fit, you can use smaller, but I just stick with the same size, it's easier.

As for a first-time magnetizer, check out my article in the P&M tutorials section. Just put it up today. Also there are plenty of other tutorials in there which are great, and one on leman russes i think.....

I generally use the 3mm size ones.

I make holes with a 1/8" drill bit and put a small ball of GS in the hole to 'bed' the magnet (because the hole is not a flat-bottomed one, and to help hold the magnet in place - because sometimes superglue just doesn't cut it alone).

I love Aussie hardware stores. Imperial AND metric all over the place. Some even stock Standard, imperial and metric bits.

if you're interested, my site (see sig) has a couple of articles on magnetizing a Valkyrie, Baneblade, and a Sentinal, as well as notes about Baal Predators and Land Raiders.
