It is my understanding that, like troops, vehicles can assume a "gone to ground" stance called hull down. In reality, it takes hours to dig a position for this to occur. Am I reading this incorrectly?

You are vehicles cannot go hull down unless there is a specific rule in their entry (that I haven't seen) that allows this. The only non-terrain cover save a vehicle can get is through either turbo boost/moving flat out or smoke launchers.

You are indeed reading incorrectly. 'Hull down' (more commonly referred to as 'obscured') refers to a situation in which half or more of the vehicle's facing is blocked by terrain, models, etc. See page 62 for more specific information.

i am not aware of any rule in the current edition that lets vehicles go hull down for free.
