Quick fix seems to me would be to paint the plasma area of if the weapon blue, then a light drybrush of purple of about 75% of the blue surface followed by a light drybrush of red of about 50% of the blue/purple surface.

Personally I like going the red\orange look. Really get in there and make things HOT!! But thats me.

Sometimes I think people can find an answer far quicker then ask on the forums. Go to http://www.coolminiornot.com first.

Let's get some physics here so we know what it would look like.

*Warning Science Content* Light is radiation. The color of that radiation is determined by the amount of energy in it. Higher energies will be blue, violet, and ultra (beyond) violet. Now plasma is a state of matter which occurs when matter is given massive amounts of energy. At that level the amount of heat it puts out will obliterate anything it touches. Now as we know the more energy it has the more the color moves towards blue and violet. We assume that this thing is pumping out radiation in a wide high energy spectrum, but its still high energy so we will see only the blues and the violets. So painting the gun and the surrounding areas in blue violet colors would be most realistic.

Paint one color, then drybrush a lighter version of the color. add glowing effects as able.

I suppose my real question is, why do you want to model your dudes with overheating plasma guns? That's just tempting the dice gods.

Don't the guns vent when they overheat? And apparently it hits the model using it so it must vent backwards into his face. I would use the front vents and make it look like steam was blowing back.

Actually on the PC it looks like the weapon would vent by opening the forward-facing valve on the back end of the weapon and forcing it up to allow the steam or what-have-you to escape.

At least that's how I would do it.

Couldn't have been he is firing far too high for that. Think he is shooting the darkness AKA 8-bit D&D.

Make it look like it is venting a lot of steam, and make it look like the model is hurriedly trying to get rid of it.

skbak, do you mean the lower plasma canister or the valve right on the guys forearm?

In the fluff I think for a plasma gun it gets 10 shots before the canister has to re refilled. I imagine a cannon has to be refilled each shot.

Heres another question....why do so many modelers opt for the helmet-less termie or marine to shoot the flame weapons haha, my guess is his skin should be crispy after using promethium that close to exposed skin!

Why would you want to model a plasma gun overheating? It would be like modelling your tanks in the middle of a "weapon destroyed" result.
