Why is it that the Black Templars Codex excludes the Plasma Cannon as an option on a dreadnought or venerable dread? Surely as a second founding chapter, the Black Templars would have access to this item in the Space Marine armoury, even if they are just a bunch of chain sword-wielding maniacs? I ask because I bought this fab Black Templars dread on e-bay with a plasma cannon as its principal weapon, and I think it should be permitted for 40K gameplay. Views welcome.

Check for officials FAQs.
If it doesn't appears on FAQs or in the CODEX it should be considered illegal.

Shucks! Guess that means I have to repaint my dread (probably Dark Angels who regularly pack plasma weapons) or wait for GW to release a new BT codex with this omission corrected

It might not be corrected. Black Templars have many heavy weapon options cut down in an attempt to show the close combat nature of the Chapter.

And the Codex was written a long time ago, before there was a plastic Plasma Cannon arm.

If I remember correctly, at the time the Black Templar codex was released the loyalist Marine codex had no access to plasma cannons on dreads and only traiter marines could wield them on dreads. Kind of like a perk for Chaos over Loyalists to counteract the loyalist benefits over chaos. Obviously this has been rectified in the latest codex.

Personally I am thinking along the same lines as Erasoket, BT are a CC army and its one more thing to make each Marine codex varient have something different.

Possibly, but not likely. If they are allowed to field a dreadnought with a lascannon and missile launcher, then I don't think they'd be denied a plasma cannon in a future update.

To the original poster: The Black Templar codex is older and:

1. Is missing things in the newer space marine codex (Redeemer Land Raider, Ironclad Dreadnoughts).
2. Has some things not in the newer space marine codex (The Armory, Terminator Honors).

Actually, we DO have Terminator Honors!

???

Terminators have them in the newer codex, but not non-terminators like the Black Templar codex.

Also, BT dreadnoughts are cheaper and can get Furious Charge or Tank Hunters, which can be nice. Too bad we don't get WS5 Venerables though.
