I was reading a book where a 40k character got stabbed in his bionic eyes by a servitor and when said servitor pulled away there was optic jelly on his fingers but how could there be optic jelly in a bionic eye? I thought they were composed of a series of lenses? Is this just another instance of the author not keeping up with his story?

The lenses could be floating in the jelly?
Which book by the way?

I haven't read it but maybe the jelly is used as either:
1)Lubricant for the mechanism controlling the lenses
2)To stop the lenses getting grimy
3)Also to keep it all clean 'cos you don't want a bionic eye getting all manky do you?
This is my guess of course knowing how a bionic eye works would be useful but they haven't been invented or if they have no one told me.

I would say that it could be either lubricant, or (most likely) the jelly is the remains of the user's actual eye, as the bionic eye dosen't essentially replace the entire eye, it may be used to enhance the user's eyesight, with the actual eyeball remaining in the skull.

Or the 'lenses' could be made from an oil-like substance held in state by a small field (like the oil-lenses in Dune, for example).

They don't say much about the tech in 40kays. It's all handwavium.

And its probably in-between each layer of lens so they don't scratch each other

Or, it could be that the bionic eye being conneceted to the eye socket still secretes optic jelly.

A bionic eye would have to have some sort of lubricant in/around it otherwise the metal components would eventually wear out the skull around the implant. The "jelly could simply be a form of padding.
