We are using the word as you intended. Soccer is an English (as in England) word that means the same things as Football. So in getting on one's high horse about it being used is a bit silly, as you in effect dogging yourself.

According to the Englishman in the article, that isn't true at all. While it may not be the most common use, it isn't completely out of use either. You probably also shouldn't take credit for a language that you didn't invent. "English" isn't yours, it was created by people a long time before we were born. Next you'll take credit for inventing eggs becuase you made eggs for breakfast once.
