If you want folks to respond to you here, I'd recommend a couple of things.

Put at least one picture in your opening thread. Nothing annoys like opening a new post called 'My new Chaos Renegades!!' to discover someone talking about an army that might or might not exist. If you lead me on with tempting promises of cool things to look at and I open it to get your musing on a hypothetical army, it's likely I will not bother to open your thread ever again, even when you have started putting up the pics later on...

I don't want to know about the bright idea in your head until you're making it a reality, I want to look at the work, not read about some idea off the top of your head, DO SOMETHING with it.

Don't post a link to a cleverly made youtube video about your work without posting a few actual photos as well. I work in an office where dakka isn't blocked but youtube etc certainly is, most of us also won't grant you the 3 mins of your heavy metal and random images before you get started showing us what you've made.

Your audience has a limited attention span and good will, give them a picture, on the thread, to look at and make a judgement.

If your pictures are fuzzy, dark and barely viewable... DON'T APOLOGISE, instead, don't put them up and don't post yet. Take a deep breath and research how to get better photos (example: use reasonable lighting, plain background and upload your pictures to a photobucket account, then cut them to correct size and 'autofix' them), there are many articles in the Articles section that will give you a good deal of help in this.

Once you've posted a selection of well lit photos in an opening post, give some feedback to the feedback given. Correspond with the first few posts in order to stimulate the conversation that might have sprung up about your work. Respond well to constructive criticism and just report anyone less than polite (The dakka mods have one sacred and protected area and it's the painting, blogs and articles section, they will rain down fiery wrath on anyone who trolls in the 'holy 3').

So, to conclude:

1. Give instant attention grabbing imagery: Pictures in the first post you make. Even if it's to aid in your discussion and give examples of what you're talking about. Because many I know just switch off 'walls of text' in this area of dakka.

2. Don't post links to blog/image hosting sites/youtube videos, unless you at least post some images from that here on the thread as well. Many of us are at work or simply not inclined to go off site to look at your work and will just continue to browse someone else who took more effort.

3. Provide decent picture quality, there are articles on how to do this, look em up. Don't let your first pics be poor ones, it leaves a bad first impression.

4. Don't just post and sod off, come back to your posted images and provide feedback on the feedback. We are a community, this isn't an art gallery, talk with your fellow dakkites and share your knowledge and thoughts.

5. If some muppet flames or insults your work, report it. As I mentioned, the mods use a very nasty stick in this area of the boards, it's got rusty nails and everything.

6. Give a clear indication of the topic of your thread in it's title. No-one likes being mislead

Hope that helps folks get some positive feedback and a more enriching experience from the art dept section of dakka.

MGS

put pictures of genitalia in your posts.

it will garner instant responses.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

There are some cases where putting pictures isn't appropriate, for example Hulksmash's recent thread about his 'counts as' army.

I think you should probably add another point: Give a clear indication of the topic of your thread in it's title. No-one likes being mislead.

This is good advice.

I have stickied the thread.

Sadly that means that most users will ignore it however it will be easily available for anyone wanting to put a link to it into someone else's thread.

And there are no excuses.

All that being said, this isn't a reason to beat up new users who don't follow the advice.

I would like to add to what MGS started and encourage all Dakka users to use the dakka gallery to host their pics. Just as Youtube is being blocked, pic-hosting sites are ix-nayed by the boys in IT at my workplace and I imagine many others as well. Do us (and Dakka!) a favor and put your pics in your gallery!

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Another bit that's probably worth mentioning: just because Dakka has a gallery function doesn't mean you should expect readers to troll through yours to find the exact picture you may or may not be referring to. If you want people to comment on your work, post the image in the thread, don't just tell people to look at your gallery. One of those things that bugs me, at least.

Is it appropiate to post photos of someone elses miniatures and say that this miniature is painted by -insert name here-?
And then compare it with your own photo of a resembling miniature but with let's say a bit diffirent colour scheme.

Sweet Jesus, Nurgle and Slaanesh in the same box!?
No, just Nurgle and Slaanesh, Jesus will be sold seperately in a blister.

As long as your clearly attribute the picture, then yes of course. I can think of plenty of occasions where one would want to post a picture of someone else's mini as an example or comparison. As a nice gesture, if it someone on dakka, you may want to also put a link to the thread where they posted it.
