I don't know about you, but it seems that lately, over the last year, 40K games are taking a lot longer simply because any time that anybody moves a tank or big Tyranid critter, or a unit of terminators, they then have to stop and reattach a bunch of magnetized parts, because the damn magnets don't hold very well. I really hope this is nothing more than a fad and that the magnet madness passes pretty quickly. The "Let's stop and put stuff back together phase" makes me want to bring a giant electromagnet to the FLGS, turn it on, then laugh hysterically

I haven't noticed it myself.

People ought to use the strong rare earth magnets and use a big enough one to hold the parts.

I don't see how that is particularly different to the large parts falling off after bad glue has been used. At least with magnets they peices will snap back into place.

I realise the electromagnet idea was somewhat facecious, however I wouldn't want to turn one on in an environment filled with steel knives

Other then initial setup I tend to not have any issue with my magnets, though I usually put 2 in each joint.

I don't see this very often, but my gaming group either has me magnet their stuff (and I don't cheap-out on my magnets, see the sig link) or they use common sense and don't magnet needlessly or loosely.

My guess is if someone's model has pieces not holding on via magnets, they went with cheaper versions or didn't research their pull forces. A nifty tool for doing so is here.

And I'm hoping you're not being literal with magnetized pants... Or else someone needs to take a long hard look at their life.

yea, the only things I magnetize are torso's on my bikers, to swap out weapons... but because I use 1/8" rare earth magnets, nothing short of the apocalypse is prying them apart.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

Haha, that's awesome! (I'm also really jealous of the great metallic pink they managed).

Never had a problem with my magnets falling apart, but I use 1/8 x 1/4 discs of rare earth magnets. The things damn near will connect from across the room - more than once there was a giant commotion and it turned out to be two vehicle parts that were several inches apart snapping themselves together.

My friend magnetized his terminators and that's actually a bit of a pain. Every time I pick them up they sort of collapse in my hands - not really far appart, but just fold in and bend.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Might have him check out this tutorial on my trial and error with those, unless he's already finished painting and whatnot.

Here's the link anyway: http://themagnetpro.blogspot.com/2010/01/assault-terminator-conversion.html

You would probably be fine. Stainless steel is usually non-magnetic.

Rare Earth magnets are insanely strong. The only times I've ever had to reassemble things with magnets was after the game when I was putting my "weapon destroyed" results back together.

You are not funny. People should learn to magnetize properly and you should try it out, see the huge benefits of it.

Most stainless steel cutlery still has a ferrous/ferric/ferritic/ferrety internal strutcure, and is thus still magnetic. Some stainless steel has its internal structure altered by the chromium (and nickel) and becomes non-magnetic.

I used to have some trouble until I realized there was a gap, now I just add magnets, it make it stronger and holds much tighter(think on my predator turret I used 6 magnets)

Yeah...I think your issue is with people who don't know how to do it right, not with the concept itself.

Hungryp speaks truth. Done right magnets dont come apart. I played a Tau player recently who had the re-apply phase in his army. was a shame cause he had paid someone else to do the job for him and paint the army as well. Didnt annoy me too bad but I was sure glad I have gone for massive amounts of rare earth in my mag projects. In fact I think I am going to go order more right now!

I think part of the problem is that if these small bits of plastic weren't so ridiculously expensive we would be able to afford two Terminators/Landraiders with different weapon configurations and not have to bother with the hassle of magnetizing them.

Last tournament I ran one Blood Angels guy had his entire unit of Death Company with magnetized arms and backpacks. The result? He didn't want to bother assembling them all before the game so the only ones with arms were the two with special weapons, and thus his really cool fully magnetized unit just ended up a unit of marines with no arms or backpacks.

if it is a heavy part it should be supported by a pin, and then the magnet stops it from sliding off the pin.

if it is not a heavy part, he should be using strong enough magnets or being more careful when he moves them!

Love the common sense displayed here, valid points.

It is the extreme expense of these models it is so hard to commit to a set load-out especially when the next codex/rules/FAQ update would be designed to make today's favorite weapon a dog the next (I am sorry, did you glue all your weapons on? Awwww....)

Don't get cheap with rare earth magnets, put in one as big as the joint can hold.
Pins would help the collapsing issue but after getting that magnet in, you really don't feel like finding room to pin too.
I have seen ring shaped rare earth magnets that could help with pinning.

1/4" is the smallest they get though.

I tried to make a commander with magnet: neck, waist, arms and backpack. I hated him. I try to stick to two areas at most, arms for dreadnaughts, one arm only for bikers, top and weapon for sentinels, hull weapon and pintle weapon on chimera, etc.

I DO keep feeling like that I put such big magnets on things that I need a 1" clearance from each other in case they stick together.

Done right, it's a great thing and while there's not always room to pin and magnetize, there's always a base to grab when you're not sure if the arms are going to fall off. My most fiddly unit are home-made warlocks with magnetized arms for sword/spear options so I grab them by the heads.

Sounds like cheap-o magnets. The ones I use are strong enough to pull each other out of superglued and/or green stuffed mounts.

Quit complaining. If you really can't handle being patient enough to wait for someone with magnets, either you have to go to the bathroom or you probably shouldn't be playing as its a very patient game which takes 1-3 hours for a regular game.
