I'm just wondering if some of you veterans have seen a increase in people who play 40k since Dawn of War started becoming populair back in 2004 ?
I ask since i myself for one am a Dawn of War veteran and have been playing since day 1 and still do from time to time and now i also find myself playing the table top game it's based on even tho i intitialy thought to myself that i would never buy those expansive figures
Also is there anyone else around here who started 40k becouse of Dawn of war ?

My next door neighbour's kids yell whenever they play in the backyard. I have heard them yell about Drop pods, Space marines and Eldar avatar. I doubt they have any models but the games have brought the universe to their attention.

Way more people are into it thats for sure. If it wasnt for computer games the game would be sooo much bigger.
Ed.. I dont think Dawn of War has much to do with it though, just the game in general. Friends show off their stuff to friends. They soon take up an army and play just to play. The cycle of life, its so beautiful.

I got into it because of the black library book... first ever read was eisenhorn. Thank god I picked arguably the best book from bl to start with
I actually bought dawn of war, NOT knowing it was about 40k... imagine my surprise when I install the game and its got space marines! my friend just recommended it, so I installed it and away I went.
Didn't get into 40k tabletop until my freshman year of college. Moved from a dinky town with a FLGS that sells 40k thats 45 minutes away to a college town with 3 stores within a 10 mile radius. Didn't pick the school for that, but damn its great up here in rochester.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

Dawn Of War is widely quoted as a source of fluff, so it must have had some effect.

Dawn of War influenced me getting into 40k. Getting into 40k influenced me trying out some of the 40k books. I started two years ago, and have Tau, Orks, and Dark Eldar; Space Marines and all flavors of them are for nooblets.

I used to play when I was one of those irritating little 12 year olds most gamers wish something awful would happen to (not all kids are like this, but I was/am extremely loud!).
Now im a bit older (20) and I bought the games a few months back. Wasnt intending to get back into the miniatures, due to money and thinking I was too old for that (to which I now say 'To hell with it! Ill do as I please!')
In any case, playing all the DoW games has prompted me and a few of my mates who go to Uni at Southampton (Im in Bournemouth, only a short train ride away) to take up the hobby again.
I think ill be going with Tau, as they appeal to me most visually and by way of play style. In fact ill be ordering the Battleforce and paints tomorrow, and going to my local GW to get either two more crisis suits or a Commander. Recommendations?

I got into 40K a year ago because a friend of mine was getting stuff at cost, I bought DoW-2 a month or two later.
Todays generation of gamers (being 18 I'd say I fall into it) enjoy explosions and awesomely rendered graphics.
Also Wyvern why not get the commander and suits? XD

I notice it. lots of little kids come in expecting everyone to have a nice blood ravens army.
I hate it, when people say things from WOW/Starcraft were created, and GW stole them. that gets to me.
but all in all, many of the nubiles you speak of are quite stupid, and often give up after a few months or they just loose interest.

My friends and I (6 total) were playing the DOW video game for quite a while before we even heard of the tabletop game, and we actually do still play the video game (closer to codex mod for dark crusade is awesome).
BTW, a lot of you were saying that its kids playing it... is this really true? because we started playing it in high school (we were about 16 years old) and that's because our band director introduced us to it.

I guess I'm of that sort of generation, I started about 3 years ago, but I was never influenced by DoW. My influence was my friends, some of whom played 40K at the time.

The only reason to buy the Commander kit is for the special issue weapons. Otherwise just use a standard Crisis suit and put some extra bits on him, or scratchbuild something.

I have been playing WHFB when I was ten or nine, don't remember which (18, almost 19 now). Swapped to 40K 3 years later. Started playing as Orcs, and I was the best Orc player EVER, not because I won, but no one knew what I was going to do, I played really Orcy. Swapped over to Chaos, and fell in love with the armor, the fluff, and the mad skills of close combatyness, and then we went to 40K, where I fell upon the dark path.
We didn't get some of our friends into it until DoW1, though.

Quite a handful of the people I play *mostly space marines =/* say they got into this because of dawn of war. Yes, I've fought my share of a blood ravens army, even as far as a commander with "Godsplitter" and when I put my Necrons on the field they look at them strangely. I guess they skipped Dark Crusade.

I got semi-hooked from Dawn of War, but wasn't hugely keen on the whole thing, until one of my mates brought a big catalogue of Space Marines into school. Switch them to Spikey Marines and bang- GW claimed another victim.

I was introduced when i was 10 by my friend WHFB is what i started but a year or so later i switched over to 40k. Because stumbled upon it on the site and thought it was cooler than WHFB, and now im 15 and play 40k more seriously and paint better and Dawn of War inspired me to get IG if that counts haha. But my first army was chose because of a picture of a saw in a terrain book of a fire warrior behind a barrier haha i loved it!

I was introduced to 40k back in the late 90's, not sure if it was '98 or '99. My moms boyfriend and his son bought some Space Marines and Dark Eldar(it was the starter set at the time). I got interested in it and had my mom buy me some Imperial Guard(what 12 year old has money to buy it themselves?). They never really finished building/painting their armies, and then I kind of lost interest because I didn't have anyone to play with. Flash forward to 2008-2009 and a few friends(some from highschool, others from college) start mentioning they have an interest in the game. Then at the end of 2009/ beginning of 2010 we all decide to start playing, some of us already had models from years gone by, others didn't have any. So we start to collect our forces(I switched over to Orks instead of Guard, after my friends explained them to me), and three of us now have playable armies(given only 500 points, almost at 1000).
Ps I only heard of Dawn of war this year.
