Currently living in an area where gw paint is hard to get a hold of, and to make matters worse student life has made funds a little tight. Im looking for some cheaper generic brands that are comparable to gw. Id still like to maintain a similar color palate if at all possible. Any suggestions?

P.S. Where can i order plastic card!?!

Maybe order paints online. Shops tend to sell their stuff with a heavy price tag. Online shopping can not only be cheaper but some sites will give the odd 10-20% off from time to time. Being Aussie I love Maelstrom due to the free shipping. Shop around online.

Or you could do what most do and use google or search the forums?

I´d say Vallejo Game Color, their color names are based on GW´s, and match very closely to them.

Also, they´re cheaper, and have quite a bit more paint in each container.

As for foundation paints and washes, that´s more difficult if you want a perfectmatch...

Vallejo makes the new Heavy Game color. Which is an opaque line to match GW's foundation. I've used a few ( own all 16 out so far). They cover well and I assume they match but I haven't had GW foundation on hand to compare.

I'll speak up on behalf of Vallejo Game Colour too!

Whilst the GW paints are by no means bad; the Vallejo range is easier to use, comes in larger amounts for the same price, and the dropper bottles are ace.

I'm also beginning to use Vallejo paints as well, but I find that they separate faster than GW paints. Anyone else experience this?

I'm a sucker for Vallejo. Allthough I use their model colour, and not their game colour. It won't match the colours of GW paint, but the selection is better.

i was under some strange impression that Vallejo was more expensive, but im glad to here they lots of following. Ive heard some reports in the past that their mixes were a little thicker and more difficult to work with.

What makes the game color different for model color?

The game colour is pretty much a GW equivalent range: Lots of bright colours etc...

The Model colour range is all about dirty browns, greens and greys; it's aimed more at historical mini ranges

As to the actual consistency of the paint... The GC range is a little thicker than the GW paints, but that's not a bad thing The MC range is thinner but the colours aren't as bright.

I found the GC range to be thinner than the GW paints.

sorry to revive this thread. but i was wondering what is the difference between a wash and a watered down color. I was under the impression there wasn't one. But i see that people buy a lot of washes.

You can 'wash on' any colour by watering it down. However GW Washes are specifically made for the purpose of washing, and work significantly better.

It's similar to the difference between buying different shades of a colour, and just buying the darkest shade of the colour and while paint, then mixing.
