as the title says what gets you in the mood to play or inspires you to collect and army?

Aliens - Nids
Zulu - Praetorian Guardsmen
etc

D-day the landings - Cadian Guardsmen (Hope you see why!)

Reading Silver Surfer comics inspired me to play 40k in general or at least start getting into the fluff...somthing about cruisin' the cosmos has always struck home. Oh and I read Ravenor...It got re-hooked when I started slipping away

This is going to be no surprize to anyone but the first Starship Troopers movie is what cemented my decision to start my IG army. I had Dark Eldar at that point but it was back when the discontinuation rumor was started so I felt I needed a change.

My Imperial Guard is populated by sergeant Apone from Aliens and Duke Nukem. Yeah.

It was Dawn of War that really inspired me to start collecting seriously. But it was way back in the day when I was playing DnD that I was actually introduced to 40k-- I've always been more into the lore and game than the collecting.

Alien series , Predator 1 and 2 star wars , Warhammer 40k copyded every one of them into diffrent armies but i still love it.

None. The painting got me started. Only after painting for a couple weeks did I find out there was a game for the models

That was a joke, but still. I've never even played DOW.

WWII really inspired me to start imperial guard, but killzone made me convert all my guards to scary red eyed guys with gas masks...

I love the Armored Core and Mech Assault game series, so thats why I love Battlesuit heavy Tau. And I love the Japanese, Buddhist and Eastern influences in all their culture. Their standard FW armour looks very Samurai like also.

original Dawn of War got me into 40k.

I'd recently watched Aliens and only a few days later I had seen that the Tyranids were getting a new codex and models. So I started a 'nid army.

Dawn of War did it for me. Fell in love with Space Marines, discovered everything else from there.

I got into it from the game Rifts, Aliens and a couple of friend's suckered me into it.

It didn't inspire me to play Chaos, but Pathfinder simply reinforced my love for crushing the weak

If you like Space Marines, you'll love every aspect of DoW2.

If you hate Space Marines, you'll like the multiplayer options, but little else.

for me, it was a friend who played. He was constantly telling me about the fluff and such i started getting into it, then he gave me DoW and i fell in love with chaos (villains rule) although, so far i only have 1 squad and its note even off the sprues

The Tanith First and Only books and finding my dad's hidden Eldar armor got me interested.

Hey you gotta start somewhere.

But if you find yourself enjoying the hobby, be wary. You'll start spending your paychecks on exactly nothing else.

I started about six months ago, and I have 3400 points of Space Marines (a full force organization chart and then some, about 150 models), plus smallish armies of Orks and Tau. It'll get away from you quicker than you realize.

My advice? Pick up a drug habit. It's both cheaper and less addictive.

40k is interesting in that unlike Magic, which is a straight-up cash vacuum that could be represented with a straightforward line graph, 40k has lots of ancillary costs that nobody expects when they first start out. For example, you look at the cost of starting an army. A Space Marine battleforce is $90. A good HQ unit is $15. A Predator and maybe a Dreadnought will be another $45 and $50. Cool, $200 to start an army. Right?

Well, then there's paint. Say you need six colors total. Okay, at $3.50 a pot, that's $21 for paint. Wait, those six colors each have a wash and a highlight to compliment them, so six pots becomes eighteen. Maybe you want a black basecoat, that's $15 for a can of black Citadel spray paint. Now you need brushes and plastic glue. Epoxy for your metal model. Sand or grass to base your models, maybe some styrofoam. Hobby knife. Wire cutters. Needlenose pliers. Wire for pinning. Rulebook. Codex. Greenstuff. Modeling tools.

All of a sudden you're spending $500 on a basic 750 point starter army.

On the other hand, you could go and spend $90 on 30 booster packs of Magic cards and get something nice out of it.

Obviously these figures are all in American dollars, but you get the idea.

Um, I must say, it wasn't booster packs, it was about 3 single cards to raise my deck to tournament competitive status.
