Okay, now we're on the right subject.
Hey 40K fans. First of all, allow me to start by saying I am totally new to the Warhammer 40K universe. I would have started a Tyranid army, if it were not for the fact that GW products hate my piggy bank. I have no Tyranid miniatures or any sort of sculpting prowess (I do have one unpainted Space Marine.) Currently, I'm in the process of acquiring enough money to build a sufficient Tyranid army and to satisfy my relentless Transformers fetish.
****************
Okay, when my art teacher announced that our final art projects could be anything using any medium, I immediately knew what I wanted to do. I decided to create a Dominatrix model based on the Epic-scaled figure. Now, I've read all the forums discussing them and respective fluff and they weren't very favorable. Most seemed to regard the Dominatrix as a fugly beast. I would kinda agree with them...but the monster had a certain charm to it. Now there are several advantages and incentives to sculpting this monstrosity.
1.) It would guarantee an A in Art
2.) It would serve as the main HQ unit of my future Hive Fleet Typhon.
3.) It would help me hone my generally poor sculpting skills
4.) It would pretty much be pretty damn awesome (depending on your taste in mediocrity)
*********************
Now for the procedure. A friend of mine who happened to be a 40K savant told me about greenstuff during one of our bullcrap sessions over AIM. At the time I was coming up with a new board game similar to 40K and I needed good sculpting material for the most detail an amateur like me could put into a model about the size of my thumb. I decided to use greenstuff for my model. However, greenstuff doesn't come cheap. To make the model to approximate scale and still mantain a relatively low budget, I used an armature made of foil. And so began two weeks of work. Unfortunately, I don't have any WIP pictures so bear with me.

Here is the final abomination on my DeviantArt page.

Please be constructive with your comments (i.e. don't just insult it, tell me what I can do to fix it or what I can do in future sculpts.)Currently, I'm in Vietnam and don't have any other pictures on my Deviant page. When I get back, I'll post more pictures.
P.S. I got an A :}

That's not what I was expecting from the title.

My reaction was "Wow, cool!". You are certainly heading in the right direction as far as honing your skills. and I think your style and concept are spot fething on!

How big is it? Looks a lot more substantial than a hive tyrant. I would think maybe a stand in for somehting a bit more massive, mebbe a tyrannofex? IF you are going to use it in 40k that is. If you are building oyur own game then hidy-ho!

That's some awesome sculpting. However, in my opinion it dosen't really convey the true threat that a Dominatrix is supposed to. It would make a sweet Tyrannofex, but I think you need to make it bigger and more threatening.

Looking good! Very cool! But there is still a lot of room for improvement. Try to give the claws, blades and armourplates of the creature sharper edges they look too blunt at the moment.

By the way, check out the TFM forum link in my sig. You might be able to get more feedback there as well. Some of us are also working on giger-esque alien creatures!

I'm not going to say that is the best sculpt I have ever seen, etc. but for a beginner that is outstanding work. In fact that is probably better than anything I can do. If you keep it up, you may very well be able to start your own company.

It's really cool. There's this thing on ebay right now:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Tyranid-Dominatrix-Bio-Titan-Apocalypse-40k-Warhammer-/200488076834?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eae054622

perhaps more suited to the "fast" look of modern nids, but it's basically a big alien queen model, I think.

Several years ago in the Citadel Journal somebody made a 40k scale dominatrix, insofar as a direct scale replica of the epic model, out of sheet metal. I wish I still had my copy to scan it, so you may consider more materials than just greenstuff.

One of things I like about it and yours is that you've kept the cradle at the top. I'm on the fence about the use of a tyranid warrior at the top instead of a gaunt but that's just taste.

I agree with the criticism about the sharp edges. Can you tell us a bit more about the dimensions of the beast so we think about it's size? Do you have any of the old armourcast stuff for size comparison? I recall it is supposed to be enormous.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Nice sculpt so far BUT the main problem is you are using Green Stuff on the whole model which doesn't give the kind of sharp edges you require on the chitinous armour. You need to be using brown stuff which is a bit more brittle when dry but excellent for armour weapons etc.

Also, it would be nice to see a regular mini next to the sculpt for scale. Finally, try an put your pictures directly on this site/post...nothing worse than having to go off to a link that then takes 30 seconds to resolve. =(

Now for the fan-made fluff. Bear with me.
Dominatrix (Tyranicus Praepotens Supremus)
This particularly deadly sub-species of Dominatrix utilized by the still-growing Hive Fleet Typhon is feared for its unique abilities. In addition to all the basic abilities of a normal Dominatrix, this beast utilizes multiple types of ammunition for its bio cannon. Studies of dead specimens reveal that the symbiote creature on the back is actually a Hive Tyrant. The Hive Tyrant serves a purpose not unlike a species of extinct fish that used to live in the seas of ancient Terra. Studies show that the fused Tyrant provide the genetic material needed to produce the ammunition. Its primary weapon is a large beetle with acidic blood that can trigger its own explosive detonation, showering the target with its blood. The result is either death by explosion or death by acid. The Dominatrix can also choose to fire a short-lived creature armed with several eggs from the beast's brood sac(yet to be added.) When fired the creature will attempt to find a weak or injured target (in game terms this would be a unit with one wound left...tell me if I'm using the term "wound" correctly,) inject the eggs, and die. The target dies as a brood of Termagants or Rippers accompanied by a Spore Mine burst from the host. These types of ammunition are not the only ones observed, but the most commonly encountered.

Thanks for the advice. However this was all done in the span of about a week and a half...as an amateur, I messed up frequently and there was little time to fix everything.

I'm not really sure what you mean. If you're asking what I'm gonna play it as a Dominatrix using the rules on some (fanmade) datasheet I found while searching online here it is http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=59018.0 .I'm also gonna alter the rules a bit so that it fits the fluff's description...I'm also gonna have to learn to play Warhammer first. XD

"Straight Fething Silver" Tanith first and only

I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the weak, the incompetent, and the treasonous.
I am a Commissar. I am empowered to deliver justice wherever I see it lacking. I am empowered to punish cowardice. I am granted the gift of total authority to judge, in the name of the Emperor, on the field of combat.
