Just when I wanted to get back into it with all the Early-War goodness on the way.

Hard news is never something that is easy to deliver, but the time has come for us to tackle this topic. On Monday 9 August 2010 we will be increasing the prices of the Flames Of War range.

Although time flies for all of us, it has been over two years since we made our commitment to keep pricing fixed and in truth it could not have been a more costly promise to make! I am not going to repeat the long list of global issues that have made all our lives harder these past two years, but I will say again that even with everything going on we kept our word and did not jump on the proverbial band wagon and raise prices as everybody else did, however we kept our long term goal in mind and focused on the future.

The price rise also allows us to tackle the ever widening gaps in currency around the world, bringing the cost of a tank into parity globally to help protect local markets. As part of this move it is time to acknowledge that the Australian and New Zealand currencies are not close anymore and the impact of having these two prices the same no longer makes sense. The direct result is that we will not be changing prices in Australia at all but will be creating a new price list for New Zealand.

We will continue to focus on supporting the hobby long term but the reality of the world has meant increases to all our costs over the past few years. It is not all bad news as there is no change to paint, the entire GF9 range or paper products, in fact we keep making those bigger and better for the same price.

FoW stuff has always been overpriced for what it is - generic WWII stuff. If their prices are a bother, there are plenty of alternatives. Many of them much better sculpted than the featureless blobs Battlefront make.

As it happens I'm playing my first ever game of FoW with my mate tonight.. We're playing North Africa. Could be fun.

Cheers

They may be a little bit on the pricey side, but many competitors do not reach their level of quality and design and i checked many competitors out. Old Glory/Skytrex is one of the few that are close, but only half of their line has the same amount of detail. Very often you get tnaks that have strange proportions. With BF you can check the original dimensions vs. theirs and they are very close if scaled to comparable levels.

They do a good job at sculpting. Maybe some soldiers are sometimes on the thin side, but 95% of time they have a nice sculp that also looks good on the table when playing. OK, GHQ ist still unsurpased when it comes to acuracy of dimensions and detail, but there are fewer people playing 1/285 than 15mm right now. For many it is to fiddly.

With many competing companies i do get tanks that have lunkers (metal sunken in after colling out) and sadly not always only on the inside, dimensions are distorted, wheels are positioned where they do not belong or they are lacking detail. There are companies that have the same 15mm level as BF, but they most of the times ask nearly the same prices.

BTW, the price rice is not that steep. It will hit the UK more than the rest of the world but that is only fair. Over the course of the last years the weak pound has made it nearly impossible for other countries to compete with UK-prices. Now they are rearanging prices to a level where it no longer is way cheaper to by in the UK. In the past sales were distorted by the weak pound, now they are at a fair competetive level again.

Off the top of my head check out Quality Castings, QRF, Peter Pig and Skytrex. Not everything in the ranges is brilliant but they all have useful things that are fully compatible with each other and FoW.

That sounds like a curse Duncan.

Perhaps you are finding those magnificent arrays of 15mm British soldiers particularly upsetting for some reason.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

That´s only because with the price difference due to the weak pound, european dealers paid close to what uk-customers paid for their minis and this way they were not realy able to compete.

Already checked them, but they do have more misses in between their hits than BF in an overall comparison. I do get one of their miniatures now and then, but overall price/quality is better with BF.

BF has very good sculpts - if you want better-looking stuff, you'll pay for it.

OG sculpts are OK, but they suffer from metal issues - heat sinks / warpage / mold lines in a big way.
