I have seen a lot of models with cool basing, but I cannot bring myself to base my models. I play on a variety of tables and for me it ruins the illusion if you have tufts of grass on a base that is in on an urban terrain table or on a desert table. So my question for you is do you think it is taboo just to have a clean chaos black painted base?

A taboo? Not as long as your models are fully painted, then the base color doesn't matter. It also helps if you give each model a name, writen on the side of the base.

But this topic is pure superstition.

A good base sceme for your army can help tie together an otherwise disparate looking army (like chaos united where they don't neccessarily use a cohesive colour scheme) It can help add another level of detail and from a colour perspective it can create a nice complement with the primary colours of an army. Unbased models, in my opinion do not have that same 'finished' look as a model even with a rudimentary texturing.

I feel your pain a little when it comes to them being on the board. Like having space wolves be based with snow but they are on a city fight board or in the middle of a desert set up. Generally however as long as the models are painted your fine. Since I have met many people who have been playing with unpainted models for years. It does show as someone else said that you care just a little bit more and if in tournaments if that is so your thing you do sometimes get extra points for your models being painted as well as based.

Its also not hard at all to base models. Get some fine sand and or small gravel at a hobby store. Spread some glue on your bases. Careful to not get any on your models if they are painted. Then dig the base in the sand then shake it off and there you do! You can get it in a lot of different colors and effects.

Can't you see we have been abandoned? Forget matters of duty and honor to the emperor this is now a matter of pride.

Agreed even just basic flock or basing sand , it just finishes off the mini

Some people like the plain black look. At the end of the day, they are your models and you need to be happy with them. Shun the Unbelievers! I have seen Ork bases with checkerboard sides and Marine bases in Chapter colors with decals. It's what YOU want to do, don't let anyone rain on your sense of style

I used to think the same way. Turns out I was just lazy. Table be damned, basing your models can make them look twice as good, easily.

I'll have to say that even basing a little makes models 110% better looking, as someone i know says 'bases and faces'

I've started looking at each model as a tiny diorama. It's not done until the base is. I no longer care if it matches the table I'm playing on.

But, if you really don't like the effect, then there's clearly only one solution. Get clear acrylic discs made that are the right size for the bases. Likto offers that option, I believe. Then it should match any table, and you have a good excuse not to do any basing material.

I feel exactly the same as the OP.

If you base a model it's certain to look wrong on every table bar one, and draw the eye away from the bit you're supposed to be looking at. It's really counter-intuative to me. The first time I saw a scenic base I was genuinely surprised. Why would anyone do that?

Incidentally, flock just doesn't look like grass to me anyway - but that's by-the-by.

For example, in kabuki drama, the stage hands wear black body suits. everyone can see them, of course, but it's easy to ignore them, they're obviously not 'really there' and the mind just edits them out. Same same plain black bases.

Obviously, soldiers don't have dustbin lids strapped to their feet, so ignore them.

I don't paint my bases for the exact same reason. Seems stupid to have grassy bases on a lava world, huh?

If you're serious about not liking to finish bases because they look wrong on different terrain, then go whole hog and invest in clear acrylic bases:

http://www.litkoaero.com/page/LAI/CUSTOM_BASES

You can get them absolutely clear. Looks good on any terrain.

Personally, I like the miniature diorama effect. When I'm starting a new army, deciding how to base it is almost as important as the army's color scheme to me.

I find grey rocks do the trick. They'll go well on almost anything. Grass planet? Well they're standing in a non-grassy spot. Lava? It's solidified into grey rock. Ice looks a lot like grey rock. Cityscape looks great with rock.

Drybrushed grey rock goes with anything. It doesn't particularly break immersion either.

I don't think it's that bad, Most, no, nearly all of my models have a Plain black base, mainly because I have a hard enough time getting my models to a decent standard let alone the bases, but for centerpiece models It's nice to have a fancy base, just to set them apart from the rest of your army.
