Subject: 40Kalc - 40K Calculator for Android - 1.8 Released : Enjoy & Happy New Year!

Last night I released 40Kalc, to the Android Market. It costs $0.99 and will help you calculate the number of wounds likely to be inflicted by a salvo. It will show you the mean as well as the 68th and 95th percentiles. It also takes in to account "rerolls". Feedback is always welcome and I'm willing to incorporate suggests. I hope to make it the most comprehensive mathhammer tool on all mobile devices.
7/25 Update: I just released a Lite version and added the Assault calculator and Vehicle shooting calculator to the full version. FNP was added to shooting and assault calculations in both full and lite. Screenshots have been updated.

Good idea, thanks.
Right this moment, no. What I will do tonight is make a lite version. I don't want to do something that time bombs, so it will have put limits put on the sliders. Example, "# of Shots" will only go to 10, instead of 100. May remove the "reroll" checkboxes as well.

40k Combat Assistant is a great app. This is not a dice rolling application or a roll tracking application, its a mathhammer tool. There is no feature overlap between the two applications.
Edit: I added a screenshot to help clarify what this app does.

The shooting screen UI doesn't have alot of places to drag the screen up and down. Makes it hard to go back and forth without changing numbers. There seemed to be no way to include different weapon profiles in the calculations to simulate a squad with mixed weapons.
Honestly it needs more functionality. Same thing can be done easily with a calculator or Excel. From a test platform standpoint though for feedback, it ran fine on both my Evo and Hero.

Good suggestions and I agree with you. I noticed the trickiness of scroll and have been thinking about a way to correct it without lengthening the scroll too much (collapsible sections?). I like the weapon groups idea and I will explore it. I'm not entirely happy with the how the results are displayed. So I may implement mixed weapons when I shake up the results display. I want to show the results for each phase (hits, pre-saved wounds, pre-invul saved wounds, etc...) while still having an interface that that be easily and quickly used during a game. I don't want to create a situation where manipulating the interface takes longer then doing the math in one's head.
JDM wrote:This would be awesome on the iPhone! (cough cough)
This is a tough decision for me. I have done much more iPhone development then Android, but working with Apple has left a bad taste in my mouth. I personally own Android devices and I would prefer to stick to only Android development to help build their app market over Apple's. On top of my personal feelings, the App Store already has an app in this space. It's a bit overpriced and I think doesn't calculate rerolls and FNP.
The money is better in iPhone apps, so I may still make one. Decisions.....

95% of your rolls with fall between the upper and lower 95th percentile. 68% will fall between the 68th percentiles. The means is just the average, it doesn't really give you an idea what you can expect to get, just a reference point. The percentiles give you a much better idea what may happen.
Generalstoner wrote:Hehe... I just got my Droid X today and downloaded this app.
I love my Droid X and this is coming from someone that is coming from an iPhone.
State of the app:
I'm working on a UI redesign. I will be merging the vehicle and shooting calculator, resulting in the vehicle shooting calculator becoming part of the lite version. The full version will get support for mixed weapon squads as well as a turn tracker (w/ timer and log) and a gamer tracker (w/ ability to log your opponent and some notes). Today someone reported a possible issue with Android 2.2, so I will look in to that tonight and possible roll out a fix. The UI redesign should happen this weekend or middle of next week.

Nice UI look for sure. I'd button down the combat simulator before starting to add all those other features for sure. Be nice to get stuff in there like Poisoned, Rending, etc.

This weeks update may have to wait until this weekend or next week. After getting some feedback, I have started rewriting the calculation engine to address a couple of issues. This next update will add some attributes and handle mix weapon squads. The UI changes (fixing the sliding issue) will be happening after that.
A couple people have reported issues on Froyo and one person had a problem with a Desire. Anyone else having issues with the full or lite version? I may need to add a reporting feature that lets me know what versions and handset are working so that I can better target problems. My tests on Froyo worked perfectly, so I have no clue what the issue is there. If I start using the new error reporting features in Froyo I have make sure that it doesn't cause problems on phone running a previous version.

Sorry for taking a while to get out an update. Android is a learning experience and I know now more about touch events and canvas drawing then I ever wanted to know. Users sent some great feedback and as a result, late this weekend I should be pushing out the new UI, mixed weapon squads, and missing attributes like melta/rending/etc...
A moment ago I released an update to the Lite version, which includes improved slider mechanics and ad support. The cap on "# of shots" has been raised from 10 to 30.
The biggest complaint I received from users was the problematic scrolling and accidental movement of sliders. Those issues should resolved on the lite version. Now, sliders can only adjusted by moving the "thumb" and any gestures on the bar itself will cause a scroll and not cause the thumb to jump to a different value.
The Full version will get the improved sliders in the next couple of days, after the have been tested on the Lite version. As always, I'm open to suggestions and look forward to your feedback.

Just got a new Android phone, and thought this might be a nice app to try out.
I can't find it in the Market, though (a search for 40kalc returns nothing, and 40k just returns a different app), is it not available in the UK, perhaps?

Clay, we are probably a year or two out from that 2gig. Rumors of phones with over 1ghz are appearing, but it only stuff like 1.2ghz.
Slinky, I have had quite a few people purchase the application from the UK. I also double checked the avilability settings and it should be available.
Do you see a "40Kalc Lite" app? What phone do you have? Android 2.2? I upgraded my Droid X to the leaked version of 2.2 and a lot of for pay app stopped showing up. When I too kit back to 2.1 they reappeared.

My phone is a sony ericsson xperia x10 mini.
I'm v new to this kind of "fancy phone", so it may be user error.
However, I also found a site with a 3d barcode for this, when I scanned it on my phone, it went to the market search but said it failed to find the app...

An issue with Android developement is device support when it comes to screen sizes and pixel density. I have attempted to support most (98%) of Android users by allowing Andoird 1.5 suppt. A problem with this is some phone can't see it. What I need to do is release a 1.6+ and a 1.5 specific version. This is something I will try to get around to after the next release. Sorry for the hassle.
guvnah wrote:I'd like to be able to type the numbers in, instead of slider bars. Any possibility of this functionality being added?
I have been thinking about way to allow single incremental changes to the values of the slider, which I believe is the core thing you are looking for. Would adding a left and right arrows on the sides of the sliders that incremented the values up or down be acceptable or are you wanting to remove the sliders all together? Automatically Appended Next Post: Here is some stats; So far there have been 55 purchases of the full version and 500 downloads of the lite version. The purchases are awesome and I appreciate the support. What is a concern to me is the retention of the lite version. Out of 500 downloads only 214 remain on the device. It a safe assumption that people that purchased the full version uninstall the lite version, so that would account for some of the uninstalls. If anyone has had a problem with the lite version please let me know. Reports of bugs and errors are welcome and fixing such issues take a priority over new features.
Are the ads a problem? AdMob is pretty much a joke and will never pay back the 30 minutes it took to implement and test. I'm very tempted to remove ads from the lite version just to save myself time the time of testing that portion each release.
If you have any problems with the lite version let me know. I have had a couple of bug reports back in July about the application crashing, but that should have been corrected very late July, however these number make me wonder.

Just rolled out 1.6.2. It includes a crash fix and enables small screen support. Last night I added crash reporting tool that give me some the information I needed to track down the crash. If anyone had problems opening the app please try it now. Anyone that didn't seeing either of the apps in the store should now see the lite version. I will likely roll out the crash fix and small screen support to the full version once I verify the app is no longer crashing on some devices.
Still working on the next big update, which includes the missing attributes.

Identified one problem in the "lite" version regarding FNP.
If the shooter's AP is 1 or 2, FNP shouldn't affect the results, but currently it does... Just a minor niggle, I'm enjoying playing with this
