Looking to make a 500pt combat patrol list. Opponents will mostly be BT SM and vanilla orks. No Vend/Valk allowed - I don't have any!

No idea where to even start...

Mech? Horde? Mix?

Any nudges in a good direction would be appreciated

I love a good horde. Try a Lord commissar for HQ. Troops 1 platoon 2 inf. squads, 1 conscripts squad. one leman russ. one vet squad, maybe in a chimera. try to max out the concripts.

Play it with the lord commissar directly behind the conscripts giving them 10 LD and the platoon commander is yelling "First rank fire 2nd rank fire" the vets giving cover against anyone trying to attack the commanders.

The russ is not needed if it docent fit.

If your going against marines them maybe try some stormtropers, there ap3 will realy help.

Vetrans, they're fun in small games with a bunch of terrain, reliable and reasonably cheap. you can field 3 or 4 squads of them and they can pace some mean damage

1 Compaqny Command Squad, 2 Veteran Squads, all with Chimeras and other upgrades is easy to make and play. I'd advise giving them Carapace armour but other people on this forum don't seem to agree, I just like my soldiers alive plus it's incredibly easy to actually make the army

and don't use artillery or the Master of Ordnance, they're over-powered in small games

I personally would take a bare minimum of troops and the cheapest HQ possible, then fill up the rest with an executioner plus something else mechy.

Horde. I believe 500 is just enough for a lord commissar and some well rounded platoons.
