My wife is interested in Malifaux...

The obvious question I bring to the table: Does anyone play it? Is it popular?

Been playing it lately. about 5 of us have crews. Its popularity seems to be increasing, if you can judge that by the activity on their forums.
I think after GenCon, if the expansion book is good, we will see it increase a good bit. Some of the incoming models are phenomenal.
Locally, we don't have FLGS that care about miniature games, except for the GW shop. So I can only say that it is gaining popularity in my group.
Its an interesting sytem, and has obvious similarities to Warmachine. The cards add a level of bluffing/gambling to the game, as well as a unique randomization method.
The world has a surprising hook and feel, considering it was created to tie together an entire range of pre-existing models.
My advice is to get a book, 2 crews that you like the look of, a couple decks, and give it a shot. Also, check the Wyrd forums for playstyle advice.
A word of warning though. Several of the crews are the hard counter to each other, and a couple are tricky to get the most out of.
Check the Wyrd forums for info about any crew you consider, to try and stay away from these matchups if you expect to play vs your wife.
Example, Seamus the Mad Hatter has a really difficult time with Lady Justice. Lady J is designed to be anti-undead. Seamus is supposed to kill things and raise them.
Sure, he can win, if you are a little lucky and have better skills than the Lady J player. But its uphill the whole way.
Also, plan to use as much scenery as possible, much more than WM/H or 40k, creating blinds and breaking up fire lanes.
Otherwise a shooty crew is unstoppable. I believe gameplay was designed for heavy scenery usage.

My wife loves the models, I'm worried about getting something we won't have anyone to play against with.

The good thing about it is that the models look sweet and it doesn't cost too much to get started, setting up two players is ~$100. Just get what looks cool to you.

It's my current favorite game. I love the card mechanic and small size. It's quite a bit more strategic than 40k I think. Even your crews activation order is an art in and of itself. I'd say go for it!
