actually, from what i've seen/heard, all female Tau have that little mercedes-benz logo on their head. It's how they tell, because female tau don't look too different from the men. So they have to be careful who they hit on

Also, just in case this thread hasn't been resolved, there's a company in the U.K who makes female tau bits (though due to copyright laws they can't CALL them Tau.) They look pretty damn nice. the only drawback is all their products are in English Pounds Sterling, so it's more expensive if you're from... well any other country. http://www.zealotminiatures.co.uk/#!__zealot-store/alien-female-heads
I only know because I came upon them on a different Dakka thread and leafed through their products. I myself am building a secondary army of Tau and wanted to do the very same thing. Since the sisters of battle have been kind of retconned, there aren't many worthwhile female troops (read: none, except daemonettes... )
