I have a lot of Space Marine units i'm currently not using at all since i settled finally on a playable Space Marine army at 1500 - 2000 points.

I'm thinking of converting them to Chaos (renegade) marines that have fealty to no-one but their leader, an ex-Dark Apostle of the Word Bearers.

I like the Word Bearers a lot, but want to keep away from the "red marines" look. The original paint scheme of my "loyal" marines is Mecharius Solar Orange.

I'm wondering if I should go flame orange to show them embracing their violent ways, or dark in keeping with the Word Bearers.

I'll see if I can. unfortunately it will have to be done through mercer cause I don't have a digicamera! and he can do it.

I'm wondering.......flame orange for lower half, and gore red for chest?

yeah that would work. Blend it from bright to dark when you're around his waist. Paint flames on his legs, that would also look cool. Wit Lava bases it would be ultimate win.

Finland... the country next to Sweden? No! That's Norway! Finland is to the east! No! That's Russia!

Yeah and make the feet golden yellow (with blending of course!).

Sweet Jesus, Nurgle and Slaanesh in the same box!?
No, just Nurgle and Slaanesh, Jesus will be sold seperately in a blister.

Ok fluff background needed I think to properly explain the mythos of the army i'm thinking of making.

First off, my space marine army is part of the lost Second Legion, the Emperor's Knights.
After 5000 years in the warp the legion was re-organised into 20 Chapter Companies. The 20th was reserved for those marines who had succumbed to the madness of being in the Warp for so long. They became beserkers, uncontrollable on the battlefield and so were put together in a comatose state (like Lemartes) between battles that needed their ferocity to win.

The Emperor's Knights came across a Word Bearers host attacking an Imperial system in late M40. That host was led by an ancient Dark Apostle named Avitas. The two armies clashed, with the Emperor's Knights able to bring over 2000 marines to the field in one sortie.
Avitas used his cabal of slave psykers to project a spell that transported Corennus, the surviving Primarch of the second legion, away from his lines to a foce set up to destroy him. It didn't work. He found avitas and his lieutenant, and even though Tzeentch sent 3 Greater Daemons to aid the Dark Apostle Avitas was forced to flee.

His host was routed, and he returned to the Dark Council in shame. There only Lorgar's foresight spared Avitas from the council's decree of execution.
Instead he was forced to undergo the Flensing. A month of torture from daemons who would rip into his flesh and try to subsume his mind.
Through all this Avitas kept on to his sanity through his hatred of the one who had reduced him to this. and swore vengeance.
At the end of the month of torture he was cast out of the Word Bearers. Only ancient pacts of brotherhood allowed him the boon of taking 7 neophyte psykers with him to start his "quest" of vengeance. The decree from Lorgar and Erebus was that until Avitas proved himself he would never be a Word Bearer again.

He left with the neophyte psykers. travelling across space for months searching for signs of the 2nd Legion. Eventually Tzeentch made a pact with him. If he would spin a web of lies for Tzeentch's brother Khorne then the 2nd Legion would come and the way of his vengeance would become clear.

On an obscure planet nearly cut off from the Imperium Avitas arrived incognito with his band of psykers.
There he performed a ritual to communicate with an avatar of Khorne. Killing the psykers in the process, he made a pact with Khorne's champion. Give them this planet to bathe in blood, and give avitas the second legion.

Daemons pour through the warp portal opened by the psychic death of avitas' companions, and soon the city they are in is awash in blood. The PDF is only just able to contain the daemons from spreading out to the other cities, and a distress call is sent to the Imperium, but being so far from other planets it's a call not expected to be answered.

The Emperor's Knights arrive. Or more precisely the 20th Chapter, the Praetorians. With the introduction of psykers capable of controlling the excesses of the madness the marines had suffered previously the chapter was finally able to prove itself in its first real engagement.

it was a disaster. The Praetorians Drop Podded into the citadel, creating a cordon of bolter death that slowly tighterned around the daemons.
Pushing them back till they were nearly at the portal, the Khorne daemons and Avitas played their trump card. Three Bloodthirsters erupted from the portal, called forth by the Avatar.
The losses were terrible. Over half of the chapter was wiped out in just under an hour, with many reverting to the Madness as their Praetors were killed. Exthelion, the Chapter Master, had no choice but to Drop Pod in the 300 nameless that had proved uncontrollable, even by the psyker Praetors.
This was what Avitas had been waiting for. Killing one of these marines with his powers of the warp, he wrapped the dead marine's armour around him and acted like he was the dead man.
Even as the avatar swore vengeance against Avitas the ex Dark Apostle pumped psychically impregnated bolter shell after shell into the creature's body.
The Portal exploded.

After the battle the Nameless (for that is what the 300 were referred to) were rounded up and drugged for their journey back to the battle barge. There once again they would be put in cryo stasis.
But avitas did not go completely under when put in his cryo tube. Using his mind, he whispered to his newfound flock. Twisting their minds until they were totall under his thrall.

When next they were called upon to fight, scant months later, the 300 erupted on to the battlefield.....and then vanished as avitas called upon his master Tzeentch to create a warp portal.

Thus the warband of avitas started. And slowly swelled into the Host of Avitas.

ok and BTW are they renegades or chaos marines?
renegades: marines that serve their own cause and are a breakaway faction (yes like commander farsight in the tau empire)
Chaos: well... do I have to explain?

Sweet Jesus, Nurgle and Slaanesh in the same box!?
No, just Nurgle and Slaanesh, Jesus will be sold seperately in a blister.

Renegades since Avitas fights only for himself now and the 300 are traitors to their Legion now.

They are played as Chaos Marines, but have no real affiliation to any one god or army.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Found Scab Red.......So i'm thinking Scab Red on one shoulder pad (to show Avitas coming from the Word Bearers), Flame Orange on other shoulder pad of SOME of the marines to show them as traitors of the Emperor's Knights...
The rest have dark armour and skull motif on shoulder pads.
