Subject: DREADNOUGHT Power fist Storm Bolter and Flamer.

I know this has probably been covered before (Although i couldn't see it in the search) A Storm Bolter on a Dreadnought is pretty standard, I have a spare arm with a Flamer. For an all round dreadnought am i better with a Powerfist /SB or Powerfist /Flamer. I want an all round dreadnought able to take on all comers.
My current thoughts are for a MM + PF + Flamer e.g. Anti Tank, Anti Horde and still able to tear things apart with a powerfist?
Alternatives Twin LAS + PF + Flamer?
MISSILE LAUNCHER - PF+ Flamer?
Your advice appreciated.

2 shots at 24" at str 4 AP 5 vs. flamer template (8") at str 5 AP4
Those two shots are not gunna be a game changer but I've seen a heavy flamer ruin someones day. But how you equip your dread depends on how your gunna use it. It is Deepstriking in a Drop Pod or is it walking across the board?

i don't deepstrike as i don't have a drop pod. so its a walker, i have a 2nd dread that is a fire support dread e.g. Lascannon and missile launcher.

PF+las+flamer is my favourite option.
If the las is too expensive for you then a MM is a good choice

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space. |

Generally speaking, HF is the way to go, especially if you deep strike via drop pos. As has been said, the SB shots might drop one model, whereas the HF can wreck a unit and change the course of the game.

Yeah a Storm Bolter is a bit weak isn't it. I would expect a Melta gun, Plasma Gun or Flamer but codex rules aren't too good for conversions of that nature!

If you have 10 points to throw around get the flamer. Otherwise use those 10 points on better things especially if you are not drop poding your dreds.

I agree with bounty hunt. the flame thrower is most definitely the better weapon. the storm builter kills 2 guys max, the flame thrower like 8. auto hitting and ignoring cover are huge. Although I feel that dreads in general are weak (at best they tarpit, at worst they get smoked by meltaguns and practically any other monster) if you're going to take one imo you should always upgrade the storm bolter to a flamer.

You need to put that Dread in a Pod!
That said, the heavy flamer is always a better choice.

I like my dreds, they keep my guys alive and kill things at a reasonable cost. The trick to making them work though is bringing more than just one.
What I've used that works: 2x TL auto cannon: for ranged anti light mech and MC (aka the riffleman dred) TLLC/ML: for long range fire support dealing with higher armor values. Iron clad: for counter assault, and being pain to kill. Assault cannon PF heavy flamer: I pod this guy in for a turn one distraction that can occasionally lay down some hurt (assuming it survives, most people opt to try and deal with it, which is my plan anyways) And finally the vanilla dred, which is a midfield guy who isn't bad for creating areas where your opponent wants to avoid. The heavy flamer is a good option, if you have the points you can't go wrong with it. (generally though, units can and want to stay out of range of the dred at all costs, its hard to take one down in CC, and good flamer shot range is assault range)

I am in agreement about heavy flamer over storm bolter any day. My dread has a twinlinked heavy flamer and heavy flamer; i put him in a drop pod, bam on the turn he arrives he can really destroy entire squads of weak things. Though for twinlinked lascannon and m launcher works nice.
