I picked one up today. Although somewhat small for 28mm figures, if mounted on a base it does not look ridiculous and has the advantage of being cheap and ready painted.
It would be perfect for 15mm scale -- the actual size of one of these boxes is about 10 feet high.

An appropriately sized one of those would make a *great* objective marker for a 40k game... "Get the xenos tech!!" You could have it "scatter" each turn as it phased in and out.

I think they're releasing a OO version to, which would be slightly better for 28mm scale.
Checked out the gaugemaster site and they have one for preorder.

Still rather small, especially at the Harlequin and Heresy figures are rather on the big side, 30-35mm. The best one around at the moment (it looks like the same model) is available from Hasslefree, and some eBay sellers among others.

Ainsty (now Old Crow) used to to a resin police box in both opaque and clear resin that was quite fun if you wanted on part materialised. They also did the clear predators in clear resin for a while too.

pre walkie-talkie days, they were to enable bobbies on the beat to have comms with their station.

IIRC they would also hold inside equipment for certain emergencies.

The pretty much died out because police all had two-way radios. Before then they were a means of the police (or in emergencies the public) contacting the station, or the light on top would flash to attract t policeman to the fact that the station wanted to contact him. Also they had thinks like a first aid kit or an incident book and I think table a chair to write stuff down. Bit like a very mini police station.
