Subject: Running a Deathwatch themed army - what codex..

OK folks.. re-thinking time. I have had some other people suggest that instead of running the Deathwatch Project I am doing as a Vanilla Marine force org, that i should give some serious thought to using them as "Blood Angels Counts As"
My thinking.. and ADVICE is needed as opposed to criticism..
1. Keep them as Vanilla Marines. Gives me access to Pedro Kantor to make the 3 squads of Sternguard scoring.. potentially giving me 9 scoring units.
1a. Keep the Vanguard Vets as Vanguard Vets, and suck up the point issue.
1b. Use the Vanguard Vets as normal Assault Marines.. which kinda feels "sour" to me as they are distinct and are planned to be "elite".
2. Use them as Blood Angels.. still can use 3 squads of Sternguard, just not scoring. Then have to deal with HQ lack and Black Rage issues
2a. Use the VV as Death Company equivalents.. keeping them as Elite type models and giving them FNP in the bargain.
2b. Use them as basic Assault Marines, thus they can score and hold objectives (but like 1b above, feels "off")
2c. Suck it up, use them as VV as normal and pay out the wazoo.
Right now, just so you know what I have in mind..
2 HQ - Pedro Kantor counts-as, Librarian with Gate and something else
3 Sternguards (2 in pods with HQ along, 1 in Rhino)
2-6 scout sniper squads ONLY
1-3 Vanguard Vet squads.. depending on if I can get the models.
1 LRC as needed.
I suspect that since volunteers are providing my models, I will be MOSTLY limited in what I can field by chance. I mean, if I get donated 10 marines with jump packs, and power swords.. well, looks like Vanguard is the default for them..
So, random musings aside.. any suggestion as to which route you would go, yourself, if you were in my shoes? Heck.. if you have a better idea of what codex I outta use, let me know!

i would rather use the codex space marines option, scoring sternguard just seems more apporpriate than deathwatch w/ black rage...

Why so intent on using vanguard? They don't fit the Deathwatch fluff, do they? But Pedro w sternguard is awesome. If you do BA use Tycho, since he has special issue ammo.

Well.. I have this volunteer idea going..
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/307185.page
and having Vanguard makes the idea special.. and keeps them along the same "Veteran" status as the Sternguard.

Stick with the standard SM codex and use the Vanguard as Vanguard. More scoring units that way and you have the (expensive but useful) benefits of the Vanguard.

You could make some tac squads (each squad from a different chapter), give the sergeants a combi, and say the Sergeants are DW. You could do the same with bike squads. Don't forget you can combat squad with nilla marines, which can double your scoring units. So that 9 becomes an 18.
Hmm...Can you take Pedro and a SM Captain on bike; and then have bikes, sterguard, tacticals, and scouts all count as scoring units?

Yes, you could.. but since I want to run a Librarian and Gate combimeltas around in an opponents backfield, I am not gonna be able to do that except in Apoc...
I am spoiled.. my Space Wolves get 4 HQ, which is double what I can do here.
Kantor is required, and Librarian is desired.. so, stuck I am.

Is the idea to keep it a fun army, or to actually make it tactically viable?
Kantor is a chapter master, so cannot take a command squad.

The idea is to drop an army on the table and get oohed and ahhhed over. Plus a cool story.
Chances of winning with this.. oh, I dunno.
Mainly a Fun army, I guess. I would want to win, (who doesn't).. but not an Uber Force Win Takedown sorta thing.
I KNOW Kantor is a CM, which is why I really am arrrghing aright now. Why can't he have a Command Squad? Is he too high n mighty to hang with them? (whine whine whine)..
I will probably end up buying him a Honor Guard eventually, depends on the total models that I end up with.
One of my minor end-goals of this is to field them adjunct to my normal Apoc army. With the Vanguards, I KNOW that I can get 4k with a normal Force Org..

Doesn't taking Logan in a SW army allow you to take WG as troops?

Yes, he does. His wording is different from Kantors, though..
And the Space Wolves don't get Sternguard nor Vanguard.. which would not fit the models I have..

I had thought about this. I guess it depends on how you are loding them out. It is wasy to give all of them a Storm Bolter [ ot Combi-Bolter] and a Power Weapon. [Notice I said Easy not Cheep]

I have been following this thread and I was inspired by both the thought of a Sternguard hvy army as well as Forge World's new mark armors so I came up with the following list:
HQ:
Kantor - 175pts
Librarian Epistolary - 150pts (may spend another 5pts here)
Elites:
1x9 Sternguard w/4 Combi-meltas w/Rhino (Kantor's group)
1x10 Sternguard w/4 Combi-meltas w/Rhino
1x10 Sternguard w/4 Combi-meltas (Librarian's group)
Troops:
2x5 Scouts w/Sgt Combi-melta and Melta bombs
Fast Attack:
2xLand Speeder Storm w/Multi-meltas
Should be 1500pts on the nose and I think it would be fun to run as well.
Just my 2 cents...
