Lexicanum is crap. Go see the original sources. According to the poster that GW published on the release of the new plastic Phobos Land Raider, the Machine Spirit is a piece of psychic engineering subsituting for a computer.

It has "aetheric stabilizer rod caps", "aetheric feed coils", "pseudo-synaptic relays", "phlogiston feed coils", "alembic shielding", and an "external sensory interface cortex".

A Machine Spirit is a spirit believed by the Adeptus Mechanicus (and, from that source, by most other humans of the Imperium of Man) to inhabit and control a piece of machinery. The functioning, or lack thereof, of any machine is believed to be the result of its spirit's disposition. To keep their machine spirits happy and cooperative, operators therefore make numerous ritualized advances to the machinery. This is to ensure the intelligent machine does not rebel against its human masters. However, some machines are allowed such an intelligence under the guise of having an especially active machine spirit. An example of this is the Vehicles of the Space Marines (for example the Space Marines' Land Raider main battle tank, which can continue to move and fire, albeit with a lesser ability, even if its crew is unable to fight). Imperial Titans have particularly complex machine spirits and can exhibit complete personalities of their own, though they still require a cybernetic interface with a human Princeps to function at their full potential.

With traditional animism, all things have a spirit, be it a tree, rock, lake or ocean, or animal.

Now, interpose that onto a world where technology is viewed the same way.

They don't know HOW things work anymore, just that they do, so they make crap up to fit their worldview.

It's part circuitry and part vat grown tissue. Less AI than MS (manufactured stupidity).
