both are FW kits I just wanted some second opinions as to which is more suited to the task.

The first http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Chaos/CHAOS_RENEGADES/RENEGADE-MILITIA-CONVERSION-SET.html combined with a box of cadians

The second http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Chaos/CHAOS_RENEGADES/RENEGADE-MILITIA-ENFORCERS.html but requires 2 boxes plus a box of cadians

Hmm, I would say the first one. The enforcers are too chaotic IMO.

Some brettonians mixed with cadians looks pretty good. Any old brettonian head and torso with cadian arms and legs looks pretty cool

Many good ways to do Penal legionnaires but between your choices the first one will be better!

Better yet. Get a bunch of bulk thin fabric. Make some dresses for them and throw dirt all over them.

Sort of what I always imagines penals as. Dirty hobos with very little of anything other than a pasgun :3

The regular renegades of those two.

Although for my money, I'll be using Void Junker legionaire plastics (with shotguns).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

meh, both of those options look like demons, not criminals.

I agree with the catachan option. If you want something more creative, then try a kitbash more like empire militia with lasguns. Some of them look like they just crawled out of solitary just to be there.

Or a mix of cadian and catachan parts with the right paint scheme:

(not mine, but you get the idea).

Your one-stop website for batreps, articles, and assorted goodies about the men of Folera: Foleran First Imperial Archives. Read Dakka's favorite narrative battle report series The Hand of the King. Also, check out my commission work, and my terrain.

Read "The Geomides Affair", now on sale! No bolter porn. Not another inquisitor story. A book written by a dakkanought for dakkanoughts!

Yeah, you don't want to use the renegade militia, I've got those guys and they are covered in chaos symbols etc. Best thing is going to be a cadian/catachan mix. Maybe some of the fantasy minis mixed in too but I'm not familiar with them.

Seconding all that. The FW models have a lot of cool details (tears in cloth, etc) but also a lot of chaos symbols molded on. Seconding a mix of cadians and catachans, or you could just scrape up as many bald heads as possible.

FW also does a weapons set, so its just the arms and guns from the renegades. Those are arms without the big cadian shoulder pads, and all ragged cloth, some improvised combat weapons, etc. You could put those on a plastic IG set, without any helmeted heads or anything.

Edit, as a bonus that set comes with a good proportion of FW-model meltaguns and plasma guns - so if you got 3 sets (enough for 2 squads of legionairres, 3 if you build some with pistols not rifles) you'd have some cool special weapons for veterans.

to those who say no to the FW torsos, I am perfectly willing to GS the chaos marks as they all appear to be indentations, also I never liked the black and white striped or the orange fatigues on the criminals. (personal preferences sorry I didn't say so before) But the fantasy kit bashes are a good alternative I may change my mind

But why would you bother with forgeworld when you don't have to? It's much easier just to do that catachan/cadian conversion above. You'll end up spending way more money on forgeworld....

That's like saying "why bother with the hobby at all. it's much easier to make up the games on paper (P&P RPG style), you'll end up spending way more money on models". We do it cos it's fun.

So to the OP, if you really are prepared to spend all the money and time on the renegades to make some legionnaires, then go for it. But bear in mind they will still look like you've just got some random renegades in your army. They really will never truly look like anything else. Sorry but that's how it is. People will se them and think "hmmm, that guy has some renegades in his army".

But if you want go ahead, they will certainly be a different take on the penal troops. And I guess it depends on what the penal troops rules are actually representing in your army. If they are meant to represent actual penal legion troops (ie. prisoners with guns) then TBh I think a random kitbash of as many differet appropriate human kits is probably the best way to go. Catachans, cadians, flagellants, militia etc. all together will make for a very ramshackle group of grunts (another good reason agaisnt the renegades, they look too unified. Penals should idealy all look different and ramshackle. Like they were just let out in whatever they were wearing when they got in prison/torn and ragged jump suits, and given a gun).

However if you want them to represent merely crazy guys with guns, then the renegade look may be the way to go. The tanks and rebreathers could be tanks full of psycho-active drugs that make them insane, prefectly representing the ruleset.

That's my 1.2p

Meta.

yeah the look I was going for was the Idea of people who dabbled in chaos and got caught by the Inquisition and were pressed into service (to face certain death) as punishment. And have a figure from the Inquisition to keep an eye on them.
