Subject: Where to start with Pre-heresy armies? Tons of help needed.

Recently decided i want a project army, something i can work away at while building other armies.
Pre-heresy marines have caught my eye due to being pretty unique (not on here, but dont usually se ethem)
So, theres the main theme i have in mind, now comes the somewhat massive problem.
I know pretty much nothing when it comes to fluff except the basics.
Armour wise, weapon wise, colour wise, i have no clues on chapters, all i know is i dont want to paint black armour (2,500 chaos done a while ago)
So, what would be a good starting point please?
Need to work out and source decent parts for models that will make them stand out, rather than being a pre-heresy coloured marine army.
So ill be going convertion heavy at all times.
So, someone help me out please, ill beg if i have to lol.

Well, if you have the spare cash, check out ForgeWorld - they just released for preoreder MKIII and MKIV armours, complete with various patterns of bolter and other special/heavy weapons (greatly resembling the old RT-era weapons).
In all honesty, that might be the cheaper of the ways to go... otherwise you're either bitz ordering a bunch, or getting various boxes and cobbling models together. IIRC the Khorne Berzerker boxed set has good legs and maybe a few chests - you just need to scrape off most of the iconography.
What legion?

Thats the problem.
Havent thought too far ahead yet.
Chances are it will be world eaters, since the white and blue looks pretty decent. Automatically Appended Next Post:
After seeing that, TS look quite tempting.
Simply a case of following that persons guide, with a few changes here and there.

well if you want world eaters defently go to forge world as probably in the long run it will be cheaper. but before going head long into this look at thing like lexicanium on the pre heresy era and you should be able to find out what was around what wasnt. also just reading the horus heresy novels helps a lot. did with me as im starting a pre heresy chaos army ( all units in their pre heresy colours and no mutations)

a cow and a calf are cut in half, and put into some cases, to call it art, however smart, casts doubt on arts hole basis. |

Funnily enough, ive ordered a few books from BL to get some ideas.
Game wise i think ill be keeping it basic.
Librarian x2 for HQ and 2 tactical squads will form a base of the army.
Also want a unit of termies in there too for good measure.
Ill need some steam knight heads from maxmini and some of thier shoulder pads for termies.
Anyone ordered from them before in the UK?
Just want to know how quick they are and what type of service it is. (hate using my card online)

If you are ok with downloading then a site called isohunt has a file named 'Warhammer 40k compiled and organised' it is basically every codex, rule book and supplement since the Rouge trader days.

I rather not go with free downloads.
Been flicking through wiki for a while now reading back history on chapters.
I think i may go with iron hands, but thats simply because of Ferrus Manus' fluff.
Just working out how to make a model for him lol.
I also think FW iron armour is the way to go.
