Hi Dakka , this issue have been puzzling me for a long time now , ever since i started playing MMORPG.
I understand some ( ok lots ) of players are extremely snobby , which i ignore them till they turn around and lecture me.
I dont understand , what does my gear , and what guild i am in , limit my freedom to what i want to do?
If i want to spend the rest of the none seige / war times with low lvl friends , shouldnt i be allowed to?
If i want to play on my alts and run around dying while dragging a cart ftull of potion to grinding areas to sell , isnt it my freedom to?
Why do people get mad at me if they see me lay dead on the ground?
Why do people tell me im wasting my time selling potions or selling teleport service? If its what i find fun?
Why do they say im wasting my gears if i dont feel like pking?
I noticed most of the good gear players only hang out with each other and never even bother replying to what strangers ask them.
Sometimes i ask them " why do you always behave like a jerk "
Most of them give the same reply " im not a jerk , im a douche. And because i can "
What the **** is wrong with them!?
So Dakka , im sure you have your share of guild mate / or people you know in game that behave this way , again i ask WHY???

There will always be douches/jerks/asses in gaming.
If someone's giving you crap because you're doing something you find fun that they don't, then ignore them, or if you can't, tell them why you're "wasting your time".
(BTW, time spent doing something you find fun is never wasted.)

It's because people who take games 'seriously' - to a certain extent - experience disruptions from players who do not take the game in question just as seriously as them.
It's like me pointing out that you used the word 'been' in the thread title when you clearly meant 'being'. It has no effect on me whatsoever. Pointing it out to you will have one of several effects, for example:
1) You get defensive and angry because you don't care
2) You get defensive and angry because you're embarrassed
3) You don't care because you think people who take spelling seriously are elitists
4) You don't care because you're a cool dude (this is the ideal reaction)
5) You're embarrassed but do not react
6) Any number of other reactions or reasons for lack thereof
Since I guess you're talking about World of Warcraft, the best example is raiding. Low-geared/skilled characters in raids let down the group as a whole because they cannot perform their role effectively. Hence, low-geared/skilled players have a harder time finding positions in publicly advertised raids. You can't get upset at people for expecting a certain standard with regards to end-game content, but once you understand this, anyone who tries to make fun of you for it is a jerk.
If you constantly try to join raids which you are not appropriately geared for, you are being irresponsible and letting down other people, which they have every right to judge you on.
If you choose to sell portals and potions, and people tell you you're wasting your time, they're generally being jerks unless you really are selling things that no one uses and they're just trying to point it out.
Some people can't point out that you're doing something 'wrong' (in their opinion) without it sounding like an insult or attack.
It's not worth getting worked up over it in any case. I'm sure you knew all of this.

I don't think so. It's not necessary, and it just makes others hate you, so....
Also, if you offend people with your elitism, people will hack you, which you don't want at all. I have a friend who was REALLY good at WoW on his private server and he was a snob, so some guy hacked him. Elitism really isn't cool at all. :3

This is true of any "elite" within a video games. You have the egotistical jerks who like to be jerks for no real reason, and then you have the people who are actually trying to help you improve who tend to be not as easy to find.
Part of dealing with them is finding the more moderate elements within said community and getting in with them. Once you're in with them it becomes easier to associate with the more jerky individuals, though some will always be jerks to you no matter what you do. Don't worry too much about them though. They usually have their own little cliques with a few friends and everyone else hates theirs guts or just barely tolerates their presence .
Welcome to online gaming

A good lesson to live by.

Ive probly played mmo's for over 8 years now.
I know not that long.
People who tell you what to do in game.. ignore them.
There are 2-3 kinds of Elite type mmo players.
1st Level - Tells you how to gear your character, or is harsh when your Enchanting or using the wrong stats for your class.
These people are helping in their own way, as they are trying to help you better your gear and class potental even if their not nice about it.
(Im guilty about this as its not hard to look up items that are good for you class.. and items that arent)
2nd - Thinks you should only do stuff to benefit your character in the most possible way.
Ignore these.. play how you want.
3rd - Doesnt care about anyone thats not in their guild.
Why help somone who's not in the same group ? ignore this type also.
--------
You sound like you want a Casual Guild, or group.
I honestly suggest you look into Final Fantasy 14 MMO that comes out in Sept.. (So far i plan on playing it as it looks good and 11 had a pretty good playerbase of helpful players)
No pvp to deal with alot of the "im better then you and i wont help you people".. as they wont pay a game without pvp.
tl-dr version...
Every mmo's will have "jerk's"
Find a group of people who are casual.
Play a Non PvP ish MMO if you want to avoid alot of them
If you pve in a group, and you get the group killed because of a simple mistake.. get used to being yelled at over it, learn from the mistake, and try not to do it again.
Of course above one ^^ is avoided by playing with people that are casual also.
Its the internet :p the best Nerd Rages happen in MMO's.
And i can easily see somone getting bad luck in who they play with or servers in a MMO to get a bad experience from it.

I cannot speak for Ragnarok Online but I am not suprised at the 'culture' you find in WoW and Lineage. I used to play Dark Age of Camelot on the European servers, the communities were freindlier. I also played Everquest for a short while back in days of yore, so I know what its like.

Luna, I think you'd find this problem in any MMO. Because they're generally quite prestige-driven (unlike other genres), there's a lot of pressure to push yourself to the limit and not doing that seems to diminish you in the community's eyes.
I remember when I played WoW (pre-Burning Crusade), people wouldn't even talk to me because I wasn't a high enough level. To be honest, I think it reaches into any XP-based multiplayer (as evident in Modern Warfare 2, where a lot of high-ranked players are uncooperative spankers).
|
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

There are 2 types of people that plague MMOs/online videogames, noobs (note: not newbies. A noob by definition is a new player who is a douche) and elitist spankers.
There will always be elitist spankers in MMOs/online videogames in general. The saddest part about said spankers is that usually they are completely unaware of the bigger picture, that it is just a game and X years from now when a better game comes out, no one is going to care how l33t your character was. What probably makes the issue worse is that usually they are completely unaware of any social faupaux they make.
To be fair, noobs can cause issues too but usually it is for the same reason, a player lacking social graces. Once you reach mid to high level, you will start meeting less noobs and more elitists.
In terms of which is worse, I've always found elitists to be worse. A noob will usually try to defend a lack of understanding of something in the game, which is not so bad general and is easily handled with either teaching them the right thing or with /ignore functions and /kick functions in most games. A confrontation with an elitist can be pretty bad if it’s over something like high levelled loot. I’ve had a guild break up over a couple of elite players fight over loot. An elitist is usually harder to get rid of as experienced players are a commodity and the elitist could be the 1 bad egg in an otherwise good guild/group. Most people would just put up with said douchery to a point, if the player can contribute to the group.
My number one suggestion when playing an MMO is to roll with a casual guild. My personal experience with casual guilds in MMOs have been tops. Everyone is usually much more friendly and willing to play the game in a variety of ways than just elite boss farming. You can also have great conversations with people on non game related stuff. And lastly, just because a guild is casual in mentality, doesn’t mean it is not capable of doing elite stuff in game. My WoW guild did some pretty elite stuff back in the day,

Being a member of a realm's elite society doesn't automatically make a person a snob. Back in my own WoW days, I met plenty of good-natured people in the inner circle of my realm. Mind you, this is before the swarm of stupid infected it and it got overrun with the rude, immature lawlsp33k crowd.
But again, there were plenty of kind people around. There -were- uppity snobs, sure, but the folks I tended to associate with kept themselves away from that group. Granted we all still told the "Can I hav gold please?" beggars to go out and earn their money, but our circle made a point never to be the first to hurl an insult.

Ignoring is always a good route, But, I prefer to then ask alot of questions (if I have some free time) even if I know the answer Make them regret ever whispering me...I kill them with my innocent massive lack of knowledge and friendly banter (played WoW since Beta and never made max lvl. ADD, no longer play any mmo except League of Legends), I like to show them my neat toys and pets I've collected and when they eventually start ignoring me I will whisper them 1 hour later with a nice "DING!!! lvl. 17 sucka!" and everytime I make a lvl. there after whether I get a response or not It made me feel good and it's fun too

I had the same troubles in WAR.
I had a Marauder, with some damn good gear (Not anywhere close to the best, but good enough to distinguish myself from most of my class). However, I got the most fun out of doing Public Quests and exploring, instead of participating in the Keeps and PVP. So, I got typed at angrily.
In caps-lock, because an MMO is SERIUS BIZNUS.
I still remember the guy who harassed me for a full 2 hours (Hadn't remembered there was an ignore) because I was slumming it helping some lowbies in Tier 2 run through a damn hard PQ with my Tier 4 Marauder.
He said I was "Wasting my level and gear helping noobs". First he invited me to his guild, and when I refused, he started ranting about how "donkey-caves like you who waste time and money helping little f*****s like these ruin the game."
He took it personally that I wasn't spending every waking moment on my character, participating in PVP so The Forces of Destruction could take Altdorf.

the players that are "snobby" are generally gak. The ones that care about "gearscore" or whatever other modifiers and don't believe that skill can matter more are idiots. About 50-75% of mmo players, play mmo's so they can feel superior to other people, in a social game, or are themselves horrible and need to hopelessly out-gear/do/whatever content to have a hope of resistance because they don't want a challenge.
in wow at least, the advent of really, really, really nerfed raids and the LFG tool has increased the douchbaggery immensely with bad players never learning how to play the game, forcing higher end players to be more stringent, which forces bad players to try and squeeze into raids that they shouldn't be in but are geared for, vicious cycle.
for every brazillion people you meet you will find a few good ones, friend them, stick with them, eventually you'll have a big enough network to not have to deal with douchebags anymore.

I disagree. i am no noob yet i am elite in game but surely not a spanker. I dont care how people play there game. they could be lvl one and fishing for all i care. and i can take my time to help people give them advice. And thing about does it matter what guild you from. Yes and no. a few months ago there was problem with a guild partly pugging and only giving loot to member even if they didnt win. so if you are part that guild you are condoning the behavior. But luna i have a question for you? why are there people who give you crud for plying warhammer in your spare time? its the same. they just dont get it.

You have a slight misconception about my post as does metalfan. Being an experienced player doesn’t make you a spanker by default. It’s only players who abuse their stature that are spankers. Most high levelled players in any standard MMO community are decent people. I shall clarify and repeat my main point.
The 2 types of people that plague MMOS:
1. Noobs (not newbies)
2. Elitist spankers (High leveled players who act like douches and harass other players)

Indeed, I hate people that act like the games are SERIZ BIZNEZ!I used to just hand gear out in WAR and I would stand up for the level 20's in Shadowbane.
My Experiance leads me to beleive there are 3 types of people in MMO's:
1) Noobs: The people who think they know what they are doing, but really don't.
2) The cool guys, the ones who are willing to work together, no matter their skill level.
3) The Elitists: "I'm a Healer, you have to do EXACTLY what I tell you too!"
I would probably rank it 2-1-3 favorite to least favorite.

You do realize that 1, 2, and 3 can all be the same person right?

No cupcake, If the person is 2 , then they cant be 1 or 3.
They wont be 1 because chances are the group will tell them how to improve hence they'll know what they are doing shortly.
They wont be 3 because working together is not "do what *I* tell you to do "
*facepalm*
Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, couldn't be.

Uh, actually they can. I played with plenty of baddies who had multiple characters and *believed* they played every one of them perfectly to a "pro" status, and could be the nicest people you know--provided they've not been stuck in an instance with some pants on head pugger who insists that "I'm doing it right, you're doing it wrong!" is dragging what should have been a 30 minute instance into 3 hours and 52 minutes.

Not really. 1 tends to be people who take even constructive criticism with an overzealous defense and accusations of ignorance at the opposing party.
They wont be 3 because working together is not "do what *I* tell you to do "
Um, actually it is--especially when the person saying "Do what I tell you to do when I tell you to do it" is telling you the correct way to do an encounter. And by the by--#3 and #2 tend to go hand in hand. More 'elite' raiders in a party with fresh minted 80s tend to take a little extra time and care, provided the fresh 80 isn't being a complete toolbag about being given advice on how to not make the group fail miserably and waste everyone's time with repeated wipes.
There's a fantastic meme floating around out there about how "You may pay $15 a month to play, but there's 4 other people in the party. Their $60 overrides your $15." Learn to play nice, or go play something single player.
*facepalm*

Hey look, you figured out copy-paste! Man. You're really moving up in the world.
