would it be possible to have one independant character join up with another? and if so, coud multiple charachters do it to form a "super retinue"?

Yes, in the IC rules for joining units, it says that they may join other IC's.

If they were shot at, you could allocate wounds however you wanted, but in assault each could be picked out.

Lovely way to put the most expensive people in your army all in one place, and yes the rules for independent characters explicitly allow you to do it.

As states above yes this is possible but it is not a great tactic. A group of 2 or more characters alone will cost a good amount of points, and either be easy to stay away from, or easy to kill. For example, you have 3 characters in a group. I shoot 3 railguns into them. They have no extra models to absorb those S10 AP 1 shots.

It can be useful in some situations, but just understand they will be a target for heavy weapons, and most likely easily avoided.

Breaking Something Valuable

Yeah, you can, but for most armies it's not so good. I mean, almost all armies say only 2 HQ's, Right? So Clumping 2 expensive units, usually vulnerable to instant death and one huge target can be not so good. Some times it works as a fire magnet, but if you split them up it's a double threat.

Also, as long as you don't mind lending a transport, they can move quickly, but other wise they have no DT... So they get shot at lots.

However, it does work in some cases. I'll use an example specific to my army- the space wolves. It's called the Herohammer, and it groups a number of wolf lords on thunderwolfs (since we can take up to four HQ) in a really tough unit. Personally, I like the tactic, just cause it's fun to play, but it is also very effective. Just stay away from vindicators.

Also, may I ask the context? As in, who you planned to group, or is it just general?

YOU ALL!

I never liked the fact that IC's can team up. Hero's are supposed to lead men, not each other.

I suppose it would look cool. Take the artwork in the 40k rulebook of the Space Marine, Inquisitor, Tech Magus and Navy Admiral all walking together. Badass.

Abaddon + Typhus = headache. The ID wounds Abby soak and the normal fire Typhus soaks with FnP. Majority T5 with 2+/4-5++ running in a land raider.

Since you can take 2 HQ choices you could technically have:

Blood Angels:

Astorath, Tycho and Lemartes all in Death Company unit.

Ultramarines:

Tigurius and Cassius as a Null Zone/Liturgies of Battle combo.

Space Wolves:
Logan Grimnar & Canis Wolfborn/Ragnar Blackmane

CSM:

Huron Blackheart & Lucius the Eternal

Ahriman & Typhus

Abaddon & Blackheart......

Remember that HQ is not always == IC. Most HQs are ICs but not all

For example BA can have 9 ICs from Elites plus 2 HQ ICs. Vanilla Marines can have IC Techmarines, and so on.

Archon + 2 Incubi + 3 Haemonculi in a raider. Badass melee machine with Majority T4, a 2+ invul save, and (pending wargear/upgrades) No majority weaponskill (so you use the Archons WS 7). Only costs you approx 300 points including wargear and transport. (I'm pretty sure its less then that)

I sometimes stick my Abbadon/Typhus or Abbadon/Ahriman combo with some Oblits. Then I break off the ICs pre melee just to rejoin when the killing is done. (it also protects your oblits from ID wounds and melee attacks)

Heavy Bolter + (auto cast) Wind of Chaos + 3x Linked-Melta, Multimelta, Linked Plasma, Plasma cannon, lascannons into the back of your fire prism/ Farseer wagon/ Warwalker squadron will be hard to aviod. even then, you will have prioritization issues with "do I really want to move my entire army". If you can get 475 points to say that in a 1500-2000 point game, you are doing it right.

Some of these do not work(sometimes/possibly)

Blood angles: Tycho can only be in that unit if he is not "Death Company Tycho"; DC Tycho is not an IC. Also while Lematres is a Special charatcter he is not an IC(he is an upgrade character).

Spacewolves: Canis Wolfborne cannot be attached to Logan Grimnar(possibly) due to Fangir(who may or may not be a Thunderwolf mount). You see one of Canis' wargear items is Fangir, and the (possibly) fluff bit of Fangir's rules is that Fangir is a "monserous Thunderwolf" and give canis an improved profile. Now, we do not know what Canis' profile was before the improvements granted by Fangir, so we don't know if fangir simply granted the Same bonuses as a thunderwolf mount; and the description says fangir is a monsterous Thunderwolf not a monsterous thunderwolf mount. We run into a few issues because if Fangir is a mount, then you can only join Canis to Wolf Packs or Cavalry, and his "rending" special rule becomes more useless(please note that their is also no such thing as a Rending special rule for models, only for attacks) simce a model on a mount can only gain the rending rule in close combat attacks made with normal weapons.

Also for Space wolves you get 2 HQ units per HQ slot; so your super unit can be Ulrik, Ragnar, Logan, and Njal.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

lol yeah, that would be like 750 pts, that moves D6" and would never have a rear shot if the player is worth a darn. You're talking about 38% of your 2k roster going into 5 models that yes can put out a lot of firepower, but nothing that a few blasts won't take care of.

And yes, we are getting a bit off topic. You can indeed join two together

1) 2D6" a turn, substantially better
2) Ever heard of deepstrike?
3) with two models that can split off and kill plenty by themselves
4) MOST pie plates are AP3 or worse. Say hello to 2+ armour and, depending on the weapon, FNP as well.

It is a fairly survivable unit. Still not much better than just DSing oblits, but interesting (and abaddon in your back yard will hurt everytime)

Can't DS Ariman doesn't have the ability to, there is plenty of AP2 or better pie plates out there, and yes 2D6 take the highest is still better, but still slow as hill. Also, indeed oblits can't ride in a transport.

Too many eggs in one basket points wise. 3 Prisms would make short work of the unit.

Plenty of AP2 plates? Nope. Most common, by far, are S8 / 9 and AP3, or S10 and AP4. Only common large blast AP2 would be vindicators, small blast are plasma cannons - which arent that common at all when rockets and melta are the current meta.

Also Fairly certain they were talking about Abaddon, who most certainly CAN DS. The auto cast wind would be from Typhus.
