Oh look, this thread again.
Cue army favoritism and heated debate regarding how "out of date" or "unplayable" various codices are in 5th.
I'd say let's update the chapter-specific Marine codices, followed by an update for vanilla Space Marines, then IG.
Because I want GW to keep making money and stay in business so I can keep playing 40k.
Didn't see that coming, did you?

Based on a combination of what is known about the current plans, and what I want:
Dark Eldar
Grey Knights
Necrons
Sisters of Battle
Tau Empire
Dark Angels
Chaos Space Marines
Eldar
Black Templars
Chaos Daemons
Orks
Inquisition
6th edition

Have to agree here.
"Should" is a loaded term in these threads.

You know, I was afraid that I was trapped in some groundhog day type scenario before I read your post. Thank you for saving me the panic. Honestly though, I completely disagree with your post. For one, most specialist SM groups just got updated. I think Vanilla should be updated first, THEN we worry about the specialists.

No Black Templar or Dark Angels, squat them. And Space Puppies. Those three don't distinguish themselves enough from Vanilla IMHO in terms of playing style.
Then 6th Edition, yaaaaaay.

Dark Eldar
Inquisition(Combined WH/DH)
Necrons
Dark Angels
Tau Empire
Black Templars
Chaos Space Marines
Eldar
Chaos Daemons
Orks
6th edition
Would be nice but this is what I expect
Dark Eldar
Inquisition
Necrons
6th Edition
SM
Tau Empire
IG
CSM
Dark Angels
Eldar
Black Templars
7th Edition
SM
Chaos Daemons
IG
Orks
Space Wolves
Tyranids
Blood Angels
8th Edition
And so on...
Might be off by one or two codices but the GW pattern is about 2+ years and time to get people to buy another 50$ core set of rules. That means core SM and IG need updates at the beginning of the cycle and then the rest rotate through.

Update in order of age. Seems like a no-brainer to me...
There are, what? 18 Codices, I think, update three a year, get them all done every 6 years, no-one ever has a 'dex out of date by more than one edition.

The SM thing was supposed to be a somewhat bitter joke. The whole thing is these threads pop up what seems once a month and always degenerate into offtopic flame wars on the silliest things before they're finally locked.

Impossible. The last time there was a good "supercodex" was 2nd edition. GW doesn't have the talent/balls for that anymore. It wouldn't sell as well as breaking it up to coincide with plastics releases.

Sisters of Battle: because they don't have any plastics of their own and because I'm biased.
Dark Eldar: because the current range is sorely lacking. Just as long as they don't give the plastic Wyches the Daemonette treatment.
Grey Knights / Inquisition: Give us a plastic Grey Knights sprue and maybe an Inquisitor & Co command squad box.

Fixed GW isn't doing it, because they'd rather expand the armies than stuff them all into one book. Makes more profit, and pleases the players/collectors more.
Only thing second edition did better than later ones was fluff, and even then fifth is certainly looking to rival second in that (which, looking at C: WH and other third and fourth edition codices, is a relief).

Based off of all of them really, but just the amount of fluff in the codices compared to some of the ones I own is impressive.

In this order:
Necrons- I play em, I'm biased, unlike DE they are old AND uncompetitive
Dark Eldar- Ugly models, ancient dex, nuff said
Inq/Daemonhunters/Witchunters- I think all sorts of reorginization is needed here the DH need it more than WH probably- The GK and SOB should have their own dex, and all 3 Inq Ordos should be combine into 1 new dex, not to mention I would really like collecting some Inq or SOB in this lifetime
Tau-not much going on in their dex, they could stand to be more competitive to boot, add more special rules and gear to reflect the whole teamwork mentality which isn't played up as much as the whole advanced tech theme of the Tau, in other words more gear like bonding knives. "Flavor" Tau by giving rules to emphasize synergy and teamwork rather than fancier guns. For example the ethereal should be able to coordinate other units in someway. Just don't steal IG orders
Dark Angels- They just seem very bland special rules and nifty wargear would be nice I want vanilla DA to be cool too, not just their termies and bikes
Chaos Marines- They lack a lot of flavor and aren't too different from Space Marines cept their horny. Bring in some more god and legion specific rules and characters, also I play em so I'm probably biased here
Black Templars- I think they just need to rework some of their rules but otherwise not so bad
Orks?- I hear they aren't so great so why not
Then the rest I guess
P.S. sorry about wall o' text

i'm thinking
dark eldar - '10
grey knights - '11
necrons - '11
eldar - 11 (why? well, gk, de, nec and sob all have odd rules to update, it'll take time, if they have eldar and DA in thepipe - with neither needing huge redo's they'll be ableto release them quickly if another falls behind
SoB - 12
DA - 12
Tau - 12
CSM - 13
Orks - 13
6th ed
SM
Templars do need an update, but ot sure they'll get it this ed, and daemons will need to wait for the fantasy cycle so 2014/15

Anyone who claims an army isn't competitive because their codex is old isn't playing the army properly.
Necrons and Tau are both very competitive armies if you know how to run them.
I'd know personally regarding Tau, and I'd know second-hand regarding Necrons - I have a friend who plays them absolutely brilliantly.

I think that DE needs an FAQ/update pdf at least. The 'Hunters should never have been released as separate 'dexes and that should be fixed along with plastics for the BS's and PAGKs.
Necrons aren't as crippled as people say, but love is needed there. Tau's outdated features are just those upgrades that were designed specifcally for 4th's shooting rules and really don't interfere with the faction's performance in 5th.
|
Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...

I agree, most old codizies are not bad because of that. Sure most old Codizies contain a larger portion of bad/useless/to expensive units, but usally, all contain enough units to win.

I'm actually the opposite here I play Necrons and my friend plays Tau. I don't mean to sound argumentative but to assume that there aren't any balance issues when there are around 9 or so unique factions which also have to consider fluff when it comes to balancing doesn't really seem fair. Sure necrons can win but it would be nice to have some AP, some sort of consistent CC specialist, more mobility outside of Monoliths, and more reliable anti vehicle.
I can't remember where I saw this but there was some report of tournamnet rankings and Necrons place 8th, I don't think that's quite competitive.
Edit- For clarification there are competitive necron lists but tbh they are quite boring (maybe all top tier lists are like this?), due to a lack of diversity in the current codex. It would be nice to have different winnable tactics, that way if someone plays casually or gets models based on aesthetics he won't be penalized as much. Also I'm not a great player or anything but I don't really enjoy velied insults claiming "I'm not playing the army properly"
Side note- I agree Tau are ok it would just be nice if they spruced up their codex a bit, but it's not impossible for them to win
