Well, I'm starting a 1000 points SW army. Mind you, I'm a terrible painter and I'll be happy if I can achieve a "tabletop standard" paint job.

Here my test miniature, Brother Sven, on the left, and an an old mini from the last time I've painted a miniature. I've only applied the base colours and a general black wash, so there's still a long way until I consider him finished.

Oh, I painted all parts separatedly, then glued together before washing.

Hope you like (yeah, sure xD)

I kept working a little on Brother Sven. I know that you can find visually better things here, but this is the best I can do at the moment with my habilities.

He's just needing it's base to be finished (paing, and snow flock) and the, sigh..., freehanded Great Company badge. The last thing will be a pain where the sun doesn't shines, so I'll be gratefull at any advice I can get at it (it needs some retouching, but I'm just too tired now)

I'm happy with the results for a tabletop mini, and since that now I know how to paint this scheme, I may start working in small batches now.

Looks good. The gold is a great touch, and I really like the freehand.

My suggestion would be instead of using the black wash, maybe next time try the blue wash, and water it down a touch with a little bit of water and an even smaller drop of gloss )or diswashing liquid but it has to be the tiniest amount). This will break all the surface tension and give a smooth coat over the space wolf grey. Then you could use the pure blue wash in the recesses to give more depth. You've got good brush control skills so adding the extra depth should be easy for you ^_^

Dark these are great I'm especially liking the little flourishes that you have applied. The chainsword pattern and shoulder are very well executed.

As for some C&C there looks like a possible mold line on the last photo and the gold could do with some more depth. Use either a wash or a highlight, but other than that these are very nice, keep up the good work.

Thanks a lot for the comments, they're encouraging!

Vent: I'm actually using gray to paint them, and non-citadel paint, for the currency exchange makes them prohibitive (Citadel costs me $3.7+shipping vs $1.75+short walk on my Plantec acrilics), also my black wash is literally black acrylic with lots of water.

Somehow on the picture they do look blueish (not on natural light and my lamp has a sunlight bulb, so I'm puzzled), but since I stated they where gray, should I use firs a gray wash and only then the black wash on the very recesses?

Lennymash: I filed the mouldline with my needle files and mouldlines, I should check to see if something slipped (though a little late on this one, I'll pay more attention on the rest. The gold sections have 2 different bronze tones, I shall try to find a pot of actual golden to highlight the borders in the hope to make it look better.

Shadowbrand: I've checked your gallery, don't lie

Well, I retouched Sven a little, but doesn't looks as good as other's works... still, I've accepted that this is my roof at the moment.

In the meanwhile, Brother Trygve will go in the same pack as Sven, and will use a meltagun.

Looking good, I really like your scheme. Watch out for the mould lines though, although I only saw them on the left leg (Svens left lol).

I should really activate the "notify when someone replies" thing, ok, rune's pressed now. (and good pun there, made me chuckle).

Brother Trygve is basecoated, as I still do that with unassembled minis and doing more than one wolf at a time means a lof of pieces laying on my desk. I'll do the washes and highlights in batches, though, and for more fun, I'll choose the pieces from the sprues for this pack's Wolf Guard, Brother Snorri.

And this is Trygve so far (am I insane for naming every single model in what will be a 1000 points army?)

[Edit because enormous picture was enormous]

Posing and basing is good, but I would advise you to thin down your paints a bit. Though I am quite fond of the bits of black and red. Really pops out of the gray.

Thanks for the comment, but if I thin my paints more I'll end having dirty water instead of acrylics xD (I do use 3 to 4 layers of paint, depending how well the color looks to me)

He lloks really good, and although 3-4 thin layers of paint is better than one thick one.

As to being insane, I'm sure you are...

yes sanity is overrated, I know, I built a 2000 point SW army and named every one of them too! I googled lists of nordic names and printed an alphabetical list i used! then painted each name on the bottom of the bases so I could write stories about the deeds they performed when beating my mates!.....but I sold them before i could start playing with them.......and then i started nother SW army!

Sven looks great! Looking forward to see more of Trygve. Also, cause I'm forced to ask for some reason, how do you do your gold?

Spoken like a true son of Russ. I'm having their names written on masking tape for the moment and glueing on the inside of the bases.

Limbo wrote:Also, cause I'm forced to ask for some reason, how do you do your gold?

Keep in mind that I don't use Citadel paints, so I'll say the colour's name and the brand in parenthesis:

Step 1: Pure Bronze (Apple Barrel Colors) directly on the gray primer.

Step 2: Black wash (black Plantec acrylic heavily watered down)

Step 3: Bronze (Model)

Step 4: Black wash

Step 5: drybrush Imperial Gold (AD)

I hope this helps a little, if not, I might put some paint on a white paper and take a pic so you can look for similar pigments.

And, I just realized that the last Sven's pic was before I """fixed""" it (note the ammount of quoting marks there)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I mentioned doing a Wolf Guard, but then I remember that the I had a single Melta xD and the rest are still on the road (according to FedEx, arriving on the 27th)

So, just for fun (as I don't intend to use him) I'll use some spare parts to make a Ragnar. This will be my scratchbuild since I find him quite forgiving. Why? Because the original mini is hideous anyway if you ask me, and it'll be hard to blow it up worse than that.

Here are some of the pieces I'll be using (the axe and hammer are for getting the wolve's heads for the backpack)

Advanced a little more on my scratch build Ragnar Blackmane.

Truth be told, it's my first real conversion and I have no idea about what I'm doing. But well, almost on all I do, I first jump onto the pool and only then I check if there's water in it.

I just shaped the legs through cutting, repositioning and pinning. I'll add modelling putty to fix all the joints, and it's not glued yet on the base, only nailed on the corck basing.

The torso is the one I'll use, just on the legs, no glue yet, as I'll paint them separatedly, but it looked cooler on the pic.

Then, by Russ, I'll do more as soon as I have more free time, which I hope it'll be today after work.

Yes, it's today, thank you

And in general, thanks for the support to all, it helps a lot when you have to continue after banging the desk with the head and trying to threat the plastic parts with a knife so they assemble themselves xD

Similar to my way of doing gold then, but I go for the simple burnished gold on tinbitz with no washes.

Ragnar looks nice so far, but I'd like to see him from some diffrent angles, kinda hard to see the pose.

And happy birthday! Hope you get some WH40K stuff =)

Haha, first of all happy birthday!
And for the models, youre painting isnt terrible, ofcourse ive seen better, but there are allot of people who do much worse! Nice solid paintwork so far, if I can give you a tip: When the model is finished (base included) give the rim of the base a color, like brown or grey or even black. It really ties the model together. Keep it up, so far it looks good.

Thanks a lot, though I doubt the WH40K stuff (it's reall expensive and the only reliable way to get it is to buy directly from GW). Once I do the arms at least, I'll put it together temporarily so I can take more pics in different angles.

Well, for Limbo, I took a side-view pic of the legs and torso, keeping in mind that they're not glued, just held by gravity. I just want to avoid the "Hurr, I'm so mean I'll just stand here as a bullseye!" pose the original mini has.

And, still WIP, as you can see, the hand that will hold the blade and the Frankenbackpack

Thanks a lot.

It still needs a lot of work. I filed the skull on the backpack and will made those triangles old backpacks had, I'm still debating with myself if I'll use modelling clay, cardboard or plasticard to make them.

I didn't advanced a lot because I get bored easily of hand-drilling stuff in order to pin them, and there's a single wire holding the sword's pommel, handle and hand... and I wonder if I'll do the same on the rest of the sword (will use 2 chainblades from the Wolves sprues).

As for the head, I'll be using this one:

The top knot is fixed to the head on top (of course) and onto the side. I kind of want to cut it and re-place it slightly backwards on the head, but I'm afraid of butchering it.

I had this quite abandoned.

I'm going to prime Wolf guard Snorri as soon as I Post this. Here is my crude solution to the Combimelta dilemma, where lots of people seems to say that the ussual conversion looks more like a "Meltagun with a single Bolter shot", and I guessed that installing a lateral charger would work.

I did a similar Combi-weapon, only with a flamer. Looks great IMO (well, my combi didn't but yours does). Cutting the hair will probably destroy his ear, so you'll have to be careful
