Hi, Dakkaites,

I'm not sure if this is a Rant, or a Story, or just the Ramblings of my tired mind, but whichever it is, if you choose to entertain it, you're in for quite some reading, so those not accomplished in the tackling of the dreaded Wall of Text ought to turn back now.

I'm relatively new to the Hobby. I've been lurking around different aspects of the Warhammer 40,000 Universe for over 18 Months, whether the Literature, or the Dawn of War Series. Slowly, I've been drawn further in, and funnily enough, the Game was the last area of Warhammer that grabbed me in. As such, I only really started Gaming with the release of 5th Edition, and also Codex: Space Marines. Don't get me wrong, I neither wanted to jump on the Space Marines Are The Bestestez Bandwagon, or the OMGROFLMAOLOLZ New Codex Want Bandwagon, but I - you could say - was naturally drawn to Space Marines. I had the Books, where I soaked up Image after Image of the mighty, stalking Astartes, and of course, I played Dawn of War in all of its forms, where Space Marines were the Race. Don't get me wrong, there were other Races that caught my eye also. Tau, for their Technology, and their Kroot Allies, and Dark Eldar, for their Enslavery, and their Speed and Flexibility, much like the Craftworld Eldar. The former never took off, and the latter - whilst I, for a period, wanted more than anything to field some Dark Eldar - I was guided away from, on the basis that the general concenus among Gamers is that C:dE is FUBAR, and the Models are lacking. When CE arrives in November, boy, I'll give you 3 Guesses what I'm going to be doing!

Anyway, to cut the long story short, I didn't witness the Rouge Trader Era, or 3rd Edition, or 4th - not that it was anything special, as far as I can see - and so, the aforementioned times, and the Minis from those times, have won themselves, almost, an air of exclusivity. I suddenly have contracted what I can only describe as an 'Out of Production Lust', whereby I really want to revisit the Out of Production Minis with an All-OOP-Army. If you're struggling to understand why, then imagine a Classic Ferrari. A 348. Classic Car Magazines and the like will tell you it is 'The Worst Ferrari Ever', on Technical and Performance grounds. But hell, is it sexy.

Does anyone else have this? Has anybody else experienced the lure of the OOP-Era? Better still, have you pursued it, and made an Army of OOP Models?

Or am I alone in my 'Lust'?

Generally the OOP models are really really ugly... a major turn off that i cant even like them enough to want to collect them.

I have a few hundred Praeotian Guardsmen, and 10k of eldar featuring all 2nd edition metal models. Nope, no clue what you're talking about...

Seriously, it's a cool way to build a relatively unique army. It also makes even collecting your force a lot of fun, tracking down the models you like.

Really? I don't find them Ugly; more, Enthralling. They have a certin Look & Feel that just smells of 'Vintage', don't you think? Or is the 'Inner Snob' getting the better of me again?

Taste is subjective, but I think that some ranges have aged far better than others. Marines have gotten so much better with each edition that the OOP stuff tends to look a bit rough, virtually all OOP orks are pretty rough looking, and the late 90s demons, while characterful, are also often goofy. That said, the IG have always had a solid range (both RT era and the 2nd edition regiments), and the mid 90's eldar sculpts, while static and 2d, are still solid.

I have a RT era marine, they're not really that great. Although when I got him he was painted up as a SW with the techniques and paints limited to the time, so looks pretty bad. Need to strip and repaint it

Old Plasma Pistols>New ones though. I managed to get one in a trade with an old Laspistol and Hand Flamer. I think the Plasma Pistol was better the old way.

It's an older pic, but here's part of my IG:

And here's one of my dire Avenger squads:

RT era beaky marines make me go weak at the knees. I still quite like the old SM / CSM dreads as well.

Tricky to find now I would guess, Ebay would probably be the only option.

Agree with Luna, a lot of the early models are the Ugly Sisters of Warhammer. But then again I ain't no oil painting

Still, if it tickles your peppermints then that's grand

I have a lot of Eldar models.
Got them cheap and second hand to start my Eldar army. And now seeing those Dire avengers above I now know that my Auratarch is based on an older Dire Avenger Exarch!

Thinking about it I too have a box of old Eldar from either RT or 2nd edition. Avengers, Banshees & Scorpions. I may have to try and dig that out.

No, it's nothing to see with being snob.

Great people are suffering from what you call the OOP Lust, such as.... me for example

Seriously, I agree that some OOP models are ugly, yet most of the late 80s-early 90s models remind me of the time when I was 12, I walked through a game store for the first time, and I saw all these beautifully painted models.
GW products were far too expensive for me by this time, and my parents were quite desperate to see me interested in little toys so I could not expect any for Birthday and Christmas. Later I could afford some models from times to times (thanks to Blood bowl and Necromunda which didn't need too much money) but when I really got into 40k, most of the models I had dreamed of had disappeared in the OOP Warp and were not replaced in the range.

I collect OOP models because some of them can really give a cool look to my armies (you should see my Death Guard Sorceror on Palanquin);
because it reminds me and some old gamers of the 'good old time' when we were kids and were painting our first models and playing our first games; and because I like to show new and younger players what the models looked like before they got in the hobby (and sometimes even before their birth).

I think you can say they are my "Madeleine de Proust".

Just took some then, figured it would add more to the thread anyway
Both taken on the display board I just finished for my Eldar, which reminds me that I need to take a pic of them and update their gallery.

Old Marine, as bad as I described.

Some of the old guns I could find, I put a current Plasma Pistol next to the old one to show their differences more. The Laspistol is on my Canoness acting as a Master Crafted Plasma Pistol

Old one is about as wide as the new one is tall, a bit less though.

For example , lots of the older sculpts looks like they are hump backed or have some sort of physical deformity that
makes them unable to stand straight -_- The hunched over space marines are posed like monkeys!

I'll agree with that, I retired a whole company of RT01 marines with Rhinos, whirlwinds, vindicators, predators, etc when the 3rd edition plastics came out.

Far superior. Especially the vehicles.

Popsicle - if you're still lusting for an OOP army when I get back up to scotland we can talk about the RT-era tanks.

I dunno, it seems every time they re-do an army, my army becomes OOP. I've been playing since 1987, so I'm on my 4th Eldar army now... Then Marines, we had the RTB01 plastic ones, then the metal ones with the plastic arms, then the first gen all-plastic ones, now we're on what? third gen plastic? I skipped second gen plastic, so I guess I am on my fifth Marine army as well (two RTB01 armies!) Not to mention an Imperial Army (before they were Imperial Guard,) a Guard army in those first funky plastics, two Squat armies, an Ork army, a Slann army lovingly converted from WFB Slann before they were replaced by Lizardmen... all OOP (current Eldar and Marine armies excepted,) mostly lost to the Warp.

I do, I find almost all GW models to be pretty ugly myself. I'm in it for the lore and the game, rather than for collecting.

Surprise surprise, more negativity.

I love all of the old out of production stuff. I got really lucky actually, I got 4 of the RT Chaos Marines (which imho look better than the new Chaos Marines) and 21 of the RTB01 Plastic Marines for $40. That's really good!

So far I am enjoying painting them. The Chaos Marines especially, they have a ton of detail and lots of character to them. I got them about 2 weeks ago and I've just been really happy with them!

Maybe I will get more later, but with the RT Chaos Marines routinely going for $7+ on eBay and other places I'm not too sure. But there's always the deals that poke through.

Though in retrospect, the Rogue Trader setting always interested me way more than the current 40k setting. It was actually really grim and gritty sci-fi, it just felt more inspired. But in the end that's my view on things and I can't force them onto other people.

Not at all! Nice strawman though.

But it's okay! I wasn't talking to you, I was just talking about the negativity in the thread in general. : )

I own one model that was made before the year 2000. It's the old leman russ.

Well, actually, it's coming in the mail. It's the one from around second edition, I think (1994). How much could I get for it? I paid 35$,
