Apologies for apologising for bad grammar and having a bit of friendly banter. Didn't intend to cause offence by going OT.

I don't mind a bit o' banter, I just think it's gone far enough. No offence, no hard feelings.

It is a bit unusual for a new player, but I think many of us who have been around have desired OOP models. I remember tracking down some RT era chaos dreadnoughts years ago. My 10,000 point Eldar army has only 1 squad of new models. I understand.

I love OOP models, I bought the armor through the ages from GW awhile back, even though they look silly with modern day SM arms on them and back packs.

I had my hands on some old 2nd ed SM metal models from my friend. I needed to take the paint off, so while I was letting them soak in break fluid I think. (I forget what I used.) I forgot about them in the garage and I think my mom tossed them while I was away on deployment. (8 months sitting in whatever it was I used would of surely got the paint off.)

I even went as far to go on ebay to get me the old Emperors Champion model for my BT. Even if he is silly looking, I love him.

I don't collect OOP stuff purely because I like the look of it.
I also prefer it because it is, in many cases, cheaper (because it is 2nd hand).

Why pay $60 retail for the new plastic kit when for $20-30 I can get the perfectly serviceable older metal version?

And besides, after a point, the older stuff will blend better with your army as it now comprises the majority of it.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

I love the old stuff, if you paint it well it looks pretty good. In fact many of the old dark elves I thought were better than the new ones. Maybe not the best technically, but I liked the feel. Full length chain mail skirts are for High Elves. Plus it's what I grew up with. The only thing I'm still looking for are some of the old Marauder Dark Elves. There are a couple that I just could never find at the shop.

Yeah, the details are not the sharpest. But they have a distinct style, they are not just evil high elves.

Any body got some of these around please pm me. Don't need a bunch, just a couple specific ones.

I also liked most of the old Chaos stuff, especially the old marines. They look chaosy, not just spikey.

Well, there are obviously quite a few people that like the older stuff -- why else would Forgeworld make Mark II armor?

I admit, some of the older models are strange, sometimes even a bit fugly -- but a lot of that stuff seems to have more character sometimes too.
The first metal tyranids all have a crazy psychedelic energy to them that I really admire -- of course, they are not to everyone's taste -- those warriors look more like warp entities than anything in the current demon range.

Look at the old Chaos renegades -- each one is as different from the next as entire ranges today.

And the original Noise Marine? The one playing the guitar? Might even be my favorite model.

Actually my favorite model is the Eldar Trader from the RT601 Adventurers set (the same set that included the female space marine).
I haven't played in a while, but back in the day I used him as Yriel because Yriel was an obscure fluff character most people didn't recognize at the time.

not my model -- this is the image from Collecting Citadel website -- very cool website btw.

He's a little smaller than the more current stuff, but I have him standing on a taller base and it's all good.

Imagine this guy standing across from a bald, screaming marine.
Space Elf Trader Dude is all "You have got to be kidding" to Mr redfaced screamy pants.

And how bought that codpiece? That's all David Bowie in Labyrinth -- am I right?

I'm not sure if this is a Rant, or a Story, or just the Ramblings of my tired mind, but whichever it is, if you choose to entertain it, you're in for quite some reading, so those not accomplished in the tackling of the dreaded Wall of Text ought to turn back now.

I'm relatively new to the Hobby. I've been lurking around different aspects of the Warhammer 40,000 Universe for over 18 Months, whether the Literature, or the Dawn of War Series. Slowly, I've been drawn further in, and funnily enough, the Game was the last area of Warhammer that grabbed me in. As such, I only really started Gaming with the release of 5th Edition, and also Codex: Space Marines. Don't get me wrong, I neither wanted to jump on the Space Marines Are The Bestestez Bandwagon, or the OMGROFLMAOLOLZ New Codex Want Bandwagon, but I - you could say - was naturally drawn to Space Marines. I had the Books, where I soaked up Image after Image of the mighty, stalking Astartes, and of course, I played Dawn of War in all of its forms, where Space Marines were the Race. Don't get me wrong, there were other Races that caught my eye also. Tau, for their Technology, and their Kroot Allies, and Dark Eldar, for their Enslavery, and their Speed and Flexibility, much like the Craftworld Eldar. The former never took off, and the latter - whilst I, for a period, wanted more than anything to field some Dark Eldar - I was guided away from, on the basis that the general concenus among Gamers is that C:dE is FUBAR, and the Models are lacking. When CE arrives in November, boy, I'll give you 3 Guesses what I'm going to be doing!

Anyway, to cut the long story short, I didn't witness the Rouge Trader Era, or 3rd Edition, or 4th - not that it was anything special, as far as I can see - and so, the aforementioned times, and the Minis from those times, have won themselves, almost, an air of exclusivity. I suddenly have contracted what I can only describe as an 'Out of Production Lust', whereby I really want to revisit the Out of Production Minis with an All-OOP-Army. If you're struggling to understand why, then imagine a Classic Ferrari. A 348. Classic Car Magazines and the like will tell you it is 'The Worst Ferrari Ever', on Technical and Performance grounds. But hell, is it sexy.

Does anyone else have this? Has anybody else experienced the lure of the OOP-Era? Better still, have you pursued it, and made an Army of OOP Models?

Or am I alone in my 'Lust'?

Generally, I don't like the OOP SM models. Someof them were ugly on such a hilarious level. The old Land Raider and Predator. I have 3rd edition SM codex with lots of pictures. The only thing I do like about them is the Razorbck when it had the gunner and the old whirlwind missile launcher. IMO all of the 3rd ed space marine vehicles [except dreadnoughts[ were ugly

No, "It makes a funny noise" is not an excuse for punching a guardsman

'Tis a good point, many vehicles look better now, the blockier more robust style is an improvement in my opinion (plus they are considerably larger now), I have a bubble-turret Predator and the new one is much nicer.

I don't think there can be much doubt that the vehicles are better. I have a bunch of the old rhinos and landraiders, They are cool to have, but the new ones look better. As far a predators go though the old all plastic bubble predator takes 2nd place. Those half metal half plastic preds they came out with were horrible. Did they ever even attempt to cast those metal pieces properly?

An awful lot of my BA army is made up of OOP models.

The majority of them are the ones I originally bought in the late eighties, topped up with a couple of extra eBay purchases (all repainted over the varying degrees of nasty old paint).

I like the new models too and have used them to fill in gaps, but there's something wonderfully nostalgic about the models, makes me think of a time when I felt YOUNG going into a GW store.

^ Now there's a Blood Angels army that sure as hell can't be accused of bandwagon jumping!

Those Blood Angels look great. Despite their slightly shorter stature, I think an army with that much old skool in it is pretty intimidating. I would expect the general of that army to really know what he was doing.

Is the captains scabbard textured like that or is that free hand? I'm pretty sure I've seen a scabbard like that before but that looks like it might be free hand.

Either way -- great stuff.

So here's my collection of RT-era Marines, all painted up as Crimson Fists. I've got a bunch of 2nd ed squads too, and my commander is from 2nd ed as well, but I decided not to post anyone but the captain and Thudd gun for the purposes of this thread. This army has RTB01 plastic beakies, RT walking turd-style dreadnoughts, some of the first metal Marines from GW, Space Hulk Terminators, and plenty of other cool old stuff. There's roughly 1500 points posted here, but it's far from all I have for OOP Marines.

Here's the whole army:

Captain Delgado and his command squad:

Sergeant Rico and his tactical squad:

Sergeant Villa and his rhino-borne tactical squad:

Lead tactical squad - the sergeant may be used as Pedro Kantor at some point in the future:

Techmarine Bob with his Thudd gun (counts-as Thunderfire) and the plasma cannon dreadnought:

My second dreadnought, with what I counts-as an assault cannon:

The Space Hulk Terminator squad, with "Bernie" the heavy flamer Terminator, who earned eternal glory in this battle: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/231337.page

I'm a big fan of the old school mechanised oblits as opposed to the current mutated terminator oblits. I’m lucky enough to have 3 of them.

Good man, Brother SRM - Nice to see a fellow enthusiast/sufferer

I've got 2 dreads too, but neither is fully painted yet. I converted them to have a flamer/melta gun respectively, but am slightly regretting it. I too am using the funny old missile launcher as a plasma cannon.

The only other pics I have at the moment are:

Thanks

The scabbard is sculpted that way and inked - there's no way on earth I'd manage that free-hand
