Newbie Black Templar Neophyte
|
Been playing Black Tempars for about four years now. I love them to no end. Win tournys with them made it to the Semi's at 'Ard Boyz. I just enjoy playing, painting and collecting them. My first army so many years back was Blood Angels. Now I don't think they'll ever take the place of the High Marshal and his boys, but I do like them.
I will admit I think they are a bit over the top as far as cool stuff goes, but oh well all the better at the end of the game.
Let me know what you think and let's have some fun with it.

I just don't like them. I have no problem with loyal Blood Angel players who played before the newest edition of the Codex, but I can't stand the bandwagon jumpers who make cheese lists and take advantage of a broken army to win their games. I also find that Blood Angels don't nearly as much skill to play compared to other Space Marine codices (a personal opinion). Black Templars, on the other hand, are amazing. They are a very respectable army requiring a good amount of skill to play well, with good looking models and great fluff to boot.
Needless to say the Blood Angel fluff is ridiculous and I will flat out refuse to play a Blood Angel player who started any time after the release of the new codex.
These are my thoughts on the topic.

Right there with you. I cannot believe how many people preordered the BA codex at my LGS. I swear that about 50% of the players who frequent the store picked it up. Suddenly, a bunch of armies that had not even been painted as SW yet suddenly became BA. It is enough to make you power vomit. I love how all the BA unit boxes come with a little handle and 4 wheels...

2 weeks after blood angels hit my store 5 people were playing that army. I think it's the recent upswing in general power levels that have put alot of pressure on players to step up their game or just not play.
I think they're pretty ridiculous. I play them because I like winning but I admit it's pretty unfair to people who are playing older codices. Sanguinary priests are a mistake. Fast rhinos are a mistake. Their 3rd ed codex had fast rhinos but no jump pack guys standard. It was practically unbeatable. Their WD article had it the other way around. Now they have both. <shoots self in the head>
Really after the guard codex had been out 2 months they should have just issued a letter through their website that read something like this: "we're sorry, we messed up, this book is ridiculous, we made some fixes and now a balanced and fair version is available free online." Instead they said "oh well the book is out its too late now. we'll just have to make *every* new army unbalanced now so it's fair..." hence blood angels silliness.

I don't see what the big deal is. I've only lost one game to BA, and that was an 800 game where the son of a bitch brought Mephiston. I killed everything but Mephiston, and the fether tabled me! Okay, so I hate Mephiston, but that's all.

its the combination of sanguinary priests and crazy mobility that make the army ... at least in my experience. for 18 points a piece a joe blood angel, with 2 attacks, feel no pain, furious charge, and a jump pack is an insanely good buy. I'm not counting the priest in that but you only need 2 of them to cover the whole force if you stick together so + 150 points with a jump pack on each...

Dark Angels Neophyte Undergoing Surgeries

To be completely honest, I don't see what all the hype about the BA's is. I've read the codex front to back more than a few times, and each army I've ever seen for them plays like a glass hammer. Yeah, the capabilities of the army are outrageous, but the cost for them is through the roof. When most of the "good" BA lists I've seen have less than 30 models in them at 1500 points, I don't see it as particularly threatening. Sure Mephiston is nasty, Librarian Dreadnoughts are ridiculous, and fast rhino chassis' are just almost unfair; but it just doesn't make me quake in my boots like the rest of the community does.
Not to mention, their fluff is stupid, non-sensical, and just downright slowed. "Experts at assault"?! The worst of the Space Wolves and Black Templar basic troops could kick the crap out of the best troops the Blood Angels could muster up.
On a side note, the Blood Angels getting an ability named "Descent of Angels" just kind of irritated me in the worst way. Especially after MY chapter got a friggin book of the very same name.

Angry Blood Angel Assault marine
Alexandria, VA
|
Hah, Blood Angels are my only army, the one that I started 40k with. At the time I wanted to start, I didn't have as much money as I'd like. So, I decided to play the army with the PDF I could download online, instead of paying 20-30 for a MAGAZINE with slightly better paper. Then, as I had finally gotten my first 1000 points assembled and painted from the AoBR and some Assault Marines, I was ready to go in and play my first game. Surprise surprise, by the time my slow ass had taken to paint them, the new codex was released. So I decided to just suck it up and buy an actual codex.
(And to anyone thinking, "How did you not know the codex was coming out you must have been supr secrt spy planning to play a cheese codex!" I didn't really have a working computer at the time, and when it did work, I wasn't checking things like the Games Workshop page. I also didn't go in the store much, so no one had told me CODEX SOON FELLOW STALKER "WHEN" NOW. I had been informed there were going to be new models, and all I thought was "Sweet, I won't have to use the metal DC.")
It may be the fact that other than reading through a friends Space Marine codex was my only other experience in armies, but while playing BA, they don't really seem like a cheesy army. On paper, yeah, we SEEM ridiculous. But have you actually read through everything? Captains can't take relic blades, digital weapons, artificer armor, etc. Our Special Characters pretty much suck across the board, except for HERP DERP MEPHISTON, who every sensible player destroyed by turn 2 (At least at my store). Our vehicles have ridiculous cost compared to yours, we don't get Thunderfire, we don't get even a tenth of the Special army changing Characters you do, we don't have combat tactics, and all this can be found in some other thread I think so I really shouldn't be posting it in this blobpost.
And again, it may be that I'm new, but I think you guys are ass-backwards when you say BA fluff is "slowed". I hear people pissing and moaning about "Deep-striking Land Raiders from SPESS" read the entry, they are dropped from a Thunderhawk. Do you really think that air-dropping a vehicle is silly, compared to psychic, bloodthirsty, fungus people whose tech shouldn't work in a sane universe? Or that Deep-striking a Land Raider is insane compared to Psyker hating Spess Puppies having one of the best psyker (If not THE BEST) in the game?
I really think you guys are drawing the line at an odd point here. I'm not saying stop hating the Blood Angels, in fact, hate all you want! It seems you like to do that.

You can't assault out of deep-strike. Your opponent cheated whether he knew it or not. Unless there's some chintzy special rule I don't know about that is.
I've always liked Blood Angels, and I have the old Angels of Death book that I like to page through from time to time. I think GW went a little crazy trying to make them different from Codex Marines though. There's just too much stuff in there that seems really out of the blue. If I were to play Blood Angels I'd probably just run them as assault Marine-heavy Space Marines with Death Company for flavor. I was actually reading the White Dwarf where the placeholder codex was published, and Jervis said something along the lines of "Blood Angels and Dark Angels have always been codex chapters with slight variations." and I wish they kept things that way. It makes me worried for what they'll do when Dark Angels get a revamp somewhere down the road.

I have no problem with them either. Although admittedly assault squad based armies are a pain to deal with (moreso than in C:SM given their equipment options in C:BA), it's not too big a deal given how many BA players want to do OTHER army concepts.

Unless there's some chintzy special rule I don't know about that is. he didnt, he DSed the LR on Turn 1 citing some weird ass rule that i didnt understand about some special IC that was inside attached to the unit. The assault marines didnt mulch me untill the next turn. I couldnt pull my FWs out (i was running all of my troops on foot in this list) and he apparently gets to make "Feel no Pain" rolls on a +2. 20-30 str 5 shots, and i killed 3 Blood Angels. Couldnt pin them either, cause he rolled a 1 on that "zomfg must be super cheesey" rule.

I played against Blood Angels a few times bck in 3rd right after their Codex was released, and had my most Epic Win ever with my Dark Eldar aginst them. OK, I didn't win, but my Archon on his own pretty much took out 1500 points of Blood Angels. There was a Chaplain and a very damaged Dread left on the other side, and my Archon. Sweeping advance rules were different back then, but DAMN was that an awesome game! And yes, the Blood Angels were a hard not to crack, what with the Rhino Rush disgorging assault troops into my lines on turn one and those huge sweeping advances...
I haven't had a chance to face the new Codex, and I probably won't. Given my dice luck, it would probably dissect any of my armies the same as any other Codex would, 50/50 chance of completely annihilating me by turn 4 lol!
But having looked though it, and having seen "new Codex smell" for all four editions of those that they have released Codices for, I am sure that it is not unbeatable, but that people aren't in the habit of thinking their way around it with the resources available to their particular army.

This is why I'm sticking with Orks. If the power curve continues as it has been, by the time the next Orks Codex comes out, the entire army will be Warbosses in mega-armor with twin-linked titan weapons and pet squigs the size and stats of a Stegadon, and then I can whip ass for once while deriding all of the band wagon jumpers because I'd paid my dues ever since second edition and the cartoon-Orks. By the way, yes the nipples are the only reason I didn't start Blood Angels.

I like the blood angels codex. It's perfect for my pre-heresy world eaters, and everything they have makes sense given that. Melta Pistols and hand flamers? totally works. All the fast vehicles? They could build better stuff back then. Hell, they even threw in decent rules for Angron. The fluff and most of the models...
