So im currious to see what Dakka thinks in general, and perhapse to help me get around to this next batch, now that i dont have any primer matterial left at home. What do you all use, what do you find the most effective way of priming your miniatures? Do you go with the usual Rattle can style spray primer? Or do you use a brush on primer, something like Gesso? Do you use an airbrush primer, or perhapse you do something all togeather differnt then any of those? Lets hear it Dakka!

Oh stop complaining, its for the greater good... Now get in the box!

I'm going to say Airbrush Primer, because assuming you're using a High-End Airbrush, it's both the smoothest finish, and the most controllable in terms of its actual application. That said, I know several Master Painters that use Gesso, but I'd say the majority of us stick with Spray Primer, be it Cheap WalMart Spray, Vallejo, or Games Workshop's own. If you're looking for a Primer Method for yourself, and you've got a little bit of Wonga to spend, I'd look at the Games Workshop Spray Gun.

For the longest time I used Wal-Mart flat black, worked well and was cheap. I like the GW stuff even though its expensive, when I start actually painting the model the first coats stick really well and seem to be a bit smoother on the coverage. I dont know if it was just me, but when I used the Wal-Mart stuff it would dry powdery sometimes, no matter how carefully I tried to apply it (yes carefully and spray paint is kind of an oxymoron).

Can is best unless you're prepared to lay out for an airbrush. Even then that's a hassle what with cleaning etc. Of course, the brand/quality of your aerosol varies greatly and you could have a whole poll again to decide the best one.

I wouldn't bother with brush on. It's undoubtedly cheaper than aerosol but the coat is likely to be uneven or thick, with painting on top detail might be lost. Seeing as I make stuff other than miniatures like vehicle kits and the like, spray is best.
