Somewhere over the rainbow

My brother says that broadsides can fire both types of shots (solid, and submission) and same with the hammerhead but the hammerhead gets a large blast instead of the small, but i think that only hammerheads can fire a submission shot and a solid shot. WHO IS RIGHT??????

Hammerheads may fire solid (single shot) or sub (big template)
Broadsides may only fire solid (but its twin-linked)

It should all be detailed in the Tau codex

it does; the OP's brother is wrong. broadside railguns can ONLY fire the solid s10 ap1 shot.

It's actually explicitly stated. Don't remember the page number, but just look up "Railgun" in the Battlesuit Armory section. It explicitly states that the Broadsides (or, to be more specific, battlesuit-mounted railguns) can only fire solid shot.

Broadside submunition would be awesome...9 s6, large, TL blasts with 72" range for <750 points? Sign me up!

And that, sir, is exactly why they don't have that capability.

If they did I'd never run Railheads ever again.

It's stated in the codex, broadsides only have the railgun solid slug shot. They are excellent vehicle killers, though I wish their smart missiles were small sub-munition shots...

Yes, they can smoosh a slugga boy very easilly...30 of em however...

They do a number on my nids. MCs, special characters (i.e. DoM), small units of T4 elite models like Warriors and Raveners...especially when used in conjunction with some markerlight shots to ruin cover saves.

That sounds like a mighty tasty thing to do! marker lights and railguns can make ANY unit cry!

Actually, against Nid T4 models like Warriors, Ion Cannons are much nicer. Three shots at S7 AP3 is better than one shot at S10 AP1, especially with markerlights ensuring they hit and dropping cover saves.

I don't really agree with this reasoning? For the Ion Cannon to take down a single Warrior, it must first hit all shots, at 2+ if markerlights are used, then wound all shots, at 2+ again, and then all cover must be eliminated by markerlights, or there is a chance they save a wound and you haven't killed a single model. There is much that can go wrong and you will probably not even kill a single Warrior with a single Ion Cannon.

The Railgun on the other hand (let's assume a Broadside), with markerlight support hits on 2+ with a re-roll, wounds on 2+, and if all cover is negated a Warrior is instantly turned to smush.

The single Railgun will reliably kill more models than the Ion Cannon in this scenario.

The Railgun seems much more effecient in this use. Ion Cannons on the other hand absolutely eats MCs. With markerlights you hit on 2+, wound on 3+ and most MCs doesn't get an armour save against it's AP of 3, and it's pretty hard to get them cover saves as well. WIth their high RoF, that's the main reason that I take Ion Cannons. Not for anti-MEQ, that's what fireknifes are for, but for anti-MC, -Bikes, -Light Vehicles. That's where the Ion Cannon really shine IMO.

Of course if you miss with the Railgun nothing happens, whereas if you miss with one or two Ion Cannon shots you still probably get a wounded model

Or you can fire a broadside team at them, 3 TL railguns. Add some marker support and its an easy 3 dead warriors. Considering of course there are not any bigger targets.

Exactly.

The Railgun is all-or-nothing.

The Ion Cannon, with three shots, at least increases your chances of at least wounding a model.
