Per this discussion, I wanted to set down what was decided about gallery policy.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/308813.page

As a mod I can do 3 things with an image - delete it, disable voting, enable voting. Disabling voting means the image will not show up in the various random gallery searches but will still be searchable and linkable.

When posting images please, please, please do 2 things.

1-Make sure it is in focus and well lit, if we can't see what it is it doesn't matter how well painted it is.
2-Tag it, if no one can find your picture it does not matter what it is. And disable voting if it's something that shouldn't be getting votes.

I won't be looking at all at the miniatures' quality, that's what voting is for, just at the quality of the image. The gallery should be there for painters of all skill levels to post on, and it should also be there for people looking to house on-topic images for army profiles, swaps, articles, tutorials, and painting blogs.

All images are reviewed by mods (usually me) so here's the general policy.

DELETE

Too blurry to see
Off topic
Inappropriate

DISABLE

Piles of bits
Unconverted, unpainted models
Crooked images
Raw battle report pics (unpainted models, piles of dice)
Mostly on topic (real world tanks etc)
Images the poster disabled voting on
Some WIP conversion shots (basically a judgment call whether or not there's something of interest)

KEEP

Any converted or painted model the user wants votes on

If you see an image that you think does not belong place tag it with delete or disable, I'll look for those tags from time to time.

On the Not Safe for Work issue, the general feeling is since this is a game where topless demon ladies chop people into small bits. With that in mind we won't delete on-topic NSFW images.

Let me know if there are questions or comments.

All sounds good, just two final issues which are linked. The turbo voter in particular often brings up a string of images that are all the same, I prefer to vote on different things not have the same models coming up repeatedly. It's probably a software thing but could be solved with some user etiquette which is simply that we don't need dozens of pictures that are all the same. Just a couple will do, best to compile them into a single montage. It shouldn't be difficult, even if you only have microsoft paint to paste them all into a single image for the gallery.

I've recently started using the turbo voter, and the above gripe is definitely true, lots of related/similar issues often appear in a row, or very close together.

Prolly beyond your Mod powers to solve, though, I spose

I too would prefer that people do not post more than absolute maximum six images of the same subject.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I still think it's a much better idea to simply make all the photos disabled by default and force people to enable them if they want them in the gallery. Since you never know what context photos are being used in the forums, it's a bad idea to delete any of them at all, (unless porn etc.)

For instance some of the posters in your gallery KK are off topic and should be deleted if you follow your policy. (Not that I advocate that)

the one that's not you sorry

the large majority of the stuff up there is not meant to be for the votable gallery CMON style, it just seems silly to set up the system and moderate it as if it is.

I'd argue that, they're up there as examples of propeganda and for people to remix into 40k themes

And some of my remixes

See!

You are making my point KK. You know how they are on topic because they are yours, do you know why anyone elses are on or off topic?

Besides you have some posters in there that you can't make the same argument with like the one encouraging you to drink milk. If that poster is on topic then is there really anything posted that needs deletion?

Really the problem is that it comes up when people are using the gallery ala CMON, which would be solved if they were set by default to disabled, then you would only have to moderate those pictures that some wiseguy put in there on purpose.

In your head, screwing with your thoughts...

I agree with asmith's idea. It seems like the most elegant solution and in the end it creates less work for you to do in moderating the gallery.
